Afraid so. Such a shame. Band of Brothers from that first series was as good as any of the film sequels. There were all kinds of press rumours over the years: that Cubby had spotted Adrian Paul in Last Rites and had his eye on him as a future Bond, that he'd auditioned for GE, that he was Cubby's favourite to replace Brosnan, etc, but a couple of years back Adrian himself said that the nearest he got was when Barbara Broccoli asked him in for a meeting and it 'didn't go very well' because he said that he only liked the Connery films! Oops.

Bit of an aside, but a benefit of having new producers who haven’t been previously connected to the series might be that it’s easier to say what you think hasn’t been as great with the series previously/what you’d do differently without offending them or their family. That said I know Craig was quite open about what he saw as the flaws of Brosnan’s era (I believe he even said anything from TND onwards was a bit s*it which I don’t think is fair, but I might not be remembering it exactly). Maybe it just shows this guy wasn’t meant to be, and it’s by choice!

From those screentests my list would have gone:

    1. Friend.

    2. Cavill.

    3. Starr.

    4. Worthington.

I agree with this. I might even put Starr above Cavill, who I thought was just okay. Friend was a real surprise to me. I would have never considered him in my head as a Bond, but the screen test was excellent in my view. The best of the four.

Haven’t watched the clips in a while, but I think a plus of Cavill was that he adapted his performance in different takes (no idea if he got a bit of direction, but I remember him doing more than one). I really don’t think he nailed it at all (he’s a bit wooden), but I can see how they would have brought him further compared to Friend and Starr (who, incidentally, are very good actors and did relatively well during those readings, but weren’t quite right). Worthington I think had been hitting the Fosters the previous night and his agent roped him into the audition 😂 Not easy though, and whatever I think of him he’s clearly improved as an actor. I know he’d spoken openly about this audition before the video was released and knew it hadn’t gone well. We’ve all had those moments in whatever our careers are. Think he even says at the end ‘no, I’m out’.

Yes is tight between Cavill and Starr who also looked the part and made no mistakes in his screentest. I think even back then Friend was a good enough actor to play role like young Bond in Casino Royale and not a prime Bond like Pierce in Goldeneye. Tell me didnt Worthington even knew his lines or i am wrong?

Said it before, but if BB and MGW really did tell Craig to his face that 'We want you to do this', the rest of them were probably never in with a real chance and were just auditioning to be the substitute if Dan didn't take it. Harsh, but...plausible.

I think he definitely had a Connery look, I remember thinking it at the time.
But being a Connery lookalike almost makes you guaranteed not to get it, regardless of how good you are.

Are you saying that, even with that big ol' sword, he couldn't cut it ?

Maybe, but you can be sure as hell that the plan B actor would have been hyped up to the point we wouldn’t know that Craig was considered (ie. If it was Cavill they’d have said he had that natural talent despite his age). They didn’t luck out getting Craig though but convinced who they saw as the best actor. We take for granted not only how good an actor he was but how committed he seemed to be to this role (as much as any other actor can be). These are considerations. If the actor is not committed and ready to fill those shoes he’s of no use. Bond is a commitment, as EON/BB said.

That’s a big part of this. An actor has to be convinced. It’s a big deal being Bond, a chunk of their life they’ll submit to fame and decreased privacy, in addition to the physical demands and roles they won’t be able to do. Not easy. The actor has to be willing and committed to this obligation. They have to care. I could not comprehend that personally and I suspect none of us can!

He looked like Connery. He was good in the Highlander tv series, very adept physically with his martial arts training making him an obvious action lead, and he had a certain gravitas. I can see why people would have suggested him. However, I noticed in the show that Peter Wingfield (as supporting character Methos) was often more interesting on screen - I think he was more expressive than the generally dour Adrian Paul - and that is not a good sign if you’re looking for the next Bond. Good enough for tv, probably not good enough for major movies.

I did think he looked the part, though.

But why would people want the successor to look like Connery? It's a bit like cloning a dog. You're not going to get the same personality.

Starr and Worthington were 30 and 29 back then, perfect age to start not too young or too old.

I read somewhere that Julian McMahon was Michael G Wilsons choice.

If the stories are to be believed, Cubby decided when he just flatly overruled BB and vetoed Bean. Me, I'd've vetoed him just for coming from Sheffield - 'Ey up, a said shecken not stirred, sithie, a' tha bloody daft?!' You can't have one of us Sheffielders as James Bond, man. If it's true that BB did argue for Sean Bean, it's interesting that she wanted to cast so strongly against type several years before she wanted Dan for the role, though.

Bear in mind Craig is from the Wirral! :D

I can see Bean as Bond I think. Good star, good-looking guy, not dissimilar to Dalton in some ways I’d say. Perhaps GE did show he’s not brilliant at the accent! :D

I can see Bean doing it. I’d say a Bond from Sheffield is no stranger than a Bond with thick Scottish accent (although he’d probably just done the accent he did as Travelyan in GE).

I wouldn’t say he was an amazingly left field candidate either. Cubby had considered actors like John Richardson who I don’t think was unlike Bean. Maybe a bit untested compared to Brosnan, which I can understand.

I don't think Bean has the right charisma. Does anyone really want to be like him?

He is! Our accent isn't as strong as scouse though but certain words can sound scouse. For Daniel I've always thought he sounded more scouse when he says police.

Again, pretty similar to Dalton on that front I’d say. He was a bit of a hit and heartthrob in Sharpe around that time.
I think Brosnan was the right choice though.

It's probably been shared elsewhere, but here we go: https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/movies/movie-news/james-bond-casting-scott-rose-marsh-1236342804/

I think he's been mentioned here before. If true, it does come a bit off left field.

At least Craig can and did do a really good 'received pronunciation' accent that suited Bond. Whenever Sean Bean tries to do anything other than a Sheffield accent, he just sounds like someone trying desperately not to do a Sheffield accent! Or maybe it's only obvious to other Sheffielders, I dunno. Mind you, there has actually been a James Bond from Sheffield:
