Bit of an aside, but a benefit of having new producers who haven’t been previously connected to the series might be that it’s easier to say what you think hasn’t been as great with the series previously/what you’d do differently without offending them or their family. That said I know Craig was quite open about what he saw as the flaws of Brosnan’s era (I believe he even said anything from TND onwards was a bit s*it which I don’t think is fair, but I might not be remembering it exactly). Maybe it just shows this guy wasn’t meant to be, and it’s by choice!
Haven’t watched the clips in a while, but I think a plus of Cavill was that he adapted his performance in different takes (no idea if he got a bit of direction, but I remember him doing more than one). I really don’t think he nailed it at all (he’s a bit wooden), but I can see how they would have brought him further compared to Friend and Starr (who, incidentally, are very good actors and did relatively well during those readings, but weren’t quite right). Worthington I think had been hitting the Fosters the previous night and his agent roped him into the audition 😂 Not easy though, and whatever I think of him he’s clearly improved as an actor. I know he’d spoken openly about this audition before the video was released and knew it hadn’t gone well. We’ve all had those moments in whatever our careers are. Think he even says at the end ‘no, I’m out’.
I agree, the others were auditioning for plan B
I think they tend to embellish things.
Are you saying that, even with that big ol' sword, he couldn't cut it ?
Maybe, but you can be sure as hell that the plan B actor would have been hyped up to the point we wouldn’t know that Craig was considered (ie. If it was Cavill they’d have said he had that natural talent despite his age). They didn’t luck out getting Craig though but convinced who they saw as the best actor. We take for granted not only how good an actor he was but how committed he seemed to be to this role (as much as any other actor can be). These are considerations. If the actor is not committed and ready to fill those shoes he’s of no use. Bond is a commitment, as EON/BB said.
That’s a big part of this. An actor has to be convinced. It’s a big deal being Bond, a chunk of their life they’ll submit to fame and decreased privacy, in addition to the physical demands and roles they won’t be able to do. Not easy. The actor has to be willing and committed to this obligation. They have to care. I could not comprehend that personally and I suspect none of us can!
But why would people want the successor to look like Connery? It's a bit like cloning a dog. You're not going to get the same personality.
