I like the Warwick version of MKKBB (Bassey butchered it) but TB is a classic. The most bondian song ever when that was something cool.
If we were talking about Tomorrow Never Dies vs Surrender there is an outstanding winner regarding those choices.
Apparently they recorded the Bassey one first. Then they found it out it was too short to play over the credits. They went to re-record it but Bassey was no longer available. They got Dionne to do the second version and this one was matched up to the timing of the credits. Not sure who but someone decided the lyrics were not to begin until TB showed up on the screen. That might not be entirely accurate as TB sings a bit before the title of the film appears.
Then it was UA that wanted the title of the movie to be in the song. Barry had to pivot and he and Black wrote TB very quickly and got it recorded with Jones. It is an interesting piece of history. There have been other submitted theme songs, but I believe this is the only time 2 theme songs for the same movie were recorded and then used. Though MKKBB was removed for TB.
Both great songs from Barry but I gotta stick with the bravado Welshman's rendition of TB. If James Bond could sing he would sing like Tom Jones. Plus I love how it's like an anthem to Bond himself.
Indeed. The year after TB was made an Italo-Spaghetti-Eurospy film was released using that nickname:
I missed this one a few days ago but I wanted to answer anyway:
Definitely Bond and Tracy's nuptials. Plus, I've never attended a wedding in Portugal before and it looks beautiful.
Yeah I must admit I never quite shared Barry's enthusiasm for that KKBB nickname, I think it's a bit rubbish! :D
The Giuliano Gemma film is a spy spoof, probably one of the better ones, although it loses it's way in the second half, as these sort of films often do.
Running out of ideas and not knowing how to wrap things up in a satisfactory manner, the makers substitute frantic energy in it's place.
By the by, that movies theme song is "Love, Love, Bang, Bang", which is performed in 1960s Girl Group style and not at all appropriate for a spy movie.
Okay shall we stay with music for a second. Lets look at another movie that had multiple theme songs submitted. This movie was rushed to production to follow up on the success of LALD.
Yes I am talking about TMWTGG. Alice Cooper submitted a song and even released the song for this movie. So my question is...
Would you rather Alice Cooper's version of TMWTGG OR keep Lulu's version?
This song was submitted too late to be considered as they are already signed Lulu for the song duties. According to one source that is why this was never even considered for the film.
Lulu's song usually shows up in the bottom of the rankings of many fan polls. It is an okay song but really isn't something you would likely play regularly. It feels a bit lacking, but this might be the fact that they rushed this film out as they wanted to capitalize on the success of LALD.
Which song would you rather have over the titles?
IMO the pop rock style of TMWTGG works better for Alice
I've always felt "Best Of Both Worlds" is more what I would like for a Lulu Bond song
I would like that! I have nothing against Lulu, but it would be fun to hear a really rocky version of that song.
