    Frederick Forsyth, author of works such as "The Day of the Jackal" and "The Odessa File", has died at the age of 86 after a brief illness. Another one of the greats gone.

    Just heard. That's very sad news. I was just looking over his work recently as I was researching something on him. I watched The Dogs of War and The Fourth Protocol at the weekend. I read a good few of his novels as a teenager and am a fan of his work. With The Day of the Jackal he launched the docu-thriller, a new subgenre all of its own. Thanks for all the great stories, Mr Forsyth.

    I was about to make a joking remark that he never recovered from the use of California Girls in AVTAK. But Brian Wilson's story is really too tragic. May he rest in peace as a giant of pop. The NYT had obviously prepared an obituary/eulogy for him, but it is brilliant. I share this legally, being an NYT subscriber.

    Brian Wilson's contributions to the popular music of 20th century are incalculable. The word genius is used so often today that it was lost some of its meaning, but it is entirely appropriate in this case.

    A few weeks ago, I lost my last-living grandparent. My maternal grandmother, Margaret, passed away at the age of 91. She died a little less than a year after her husband, my grandfather, with whom she had been married more than 65 years. With my paternal grandparents long gone, and now also my other two grandparents, it feels like my parents and I have climbed a spot so to speak on the generational ladder. And for the first time in my life, I can no longer visit my grandparents. Their house was sold today, a house I spent the past 43 years visiting on a regular basis. It all feels so definite now, so irreversable. I have had the honor of knowing three of my grandparents very well. They are now no more. And I shall miss them.

    My condolences @DarthDimi. All those years spent must make it extremely difficult for it to suddenly be no more. It is a great thing you had as much time together as you did, though. It is a strange feeling when you’ve lost all your grandparents. I hope you and your family will be strong through the loss together.

    I'm sorry, @DarthDimi. Of all my grandparents, I only knew my maternal grandmother in the first place. Her husband, my maternal grandfather, died two days after my birth (which must have sent a fatal shock somehow). My paternal grandparents died in Dresden in 1945 (though not in the bombing) and 1953, well before I was born. I loved my sole "Oma", and she loved me, but I lost her when I was 13. I sort of envy all older grown-ups who still had their grandparents around, and I'm sure you cherish the time you had with them.

    Sorry about that @DarthDimi that reminds me of my Paternal grandfather who have passed away last year, it's sad yet traumatic because I was there, we're all there by the time he had taken his last breath, it's sad, my condolences.

    Hoping that you and @Ludovico could survive the pain you are both feeling.

    I'm sorry to hear that @DarthDimi. I have lost my last-living grandparent last Summer and was, and still am, deeply saddened by that, I can imagine you are feeling the same. Grandparents are important in one's life, unconditionally ready to help one's folks, their children, to raise you and teach you about life. An underestimated loss. May the good memories that you undoubtedly have keep you company forever. My condolences, my friend.

    I offer my condolences, @DarthDimi it hurts I know the feeling. My mom's mom was a very sweet, non-judgmental person. I always try to be like her in that way. My grandfather influenced a lot of my personality, in a good way. So @DarthDimi I'm sorry for your loss, and we are here for you.

    I’m sorry for your loss @DarthDimi. A beautiful tribute to your grandmother Margaret. From your lovely post I feel we are on the same page as far as our grandparents are concerned.
    I was lucky enough to live next door to my mothers parents when I grew up, and my fathers parents only lived at the end of the village. So I got to spend a lot of time with all of them.
    However I had a much stronger bond with my mother parents who lived next door.
    After school I would always go straight round to see them. Not only because they would spoil me with a treat from the chocolate tin, but also because they would share such amazing stories. The love of a grandparent and their grandchild and vice versa is something sacred and unmeasurable.
    My Nan and Grandad taught me so many valuable lessons, without trying. Their advice and wisdom something I cherish. Their unconditional love was reciprocal. They both passed within six months of each other in the early 1990’s, and I still miss them. They had a very positive impact on my life.
    I’m sorry that you’ve lost someone so special @DarthDimi the only thought I can possibly offer is treasure those wonderful memories you’ve got over the years, because no matter what, they’ll be with you for always.
