Oh, South Africa, well that's just across the pond. Would be great to see South Africa in a Bond film, and a touch of noir too. It's slowly getting colder here now, but yesterday spiked to 27.

I'd LOVE to see South Africa in a Bond film. With Pearl Thusi as a Bond girl, perhaps?

Can I interrupt you for a second? I just had this idea, but --and I know it's a crazy thought, I'm just pulling my head here-- but what if when Tom jumps off the bike, he turns to the camera and says "this mission... it just got a hell of a lot more... impossibler." And BOOM! Then you do the crash.

    That's good to consider.

This was a northern hemisphere question.

Lets move on to another question:

Would you rather Felix Leiter return OR create a new American ally for Bond?

With Amazon in charge there are some creative thoughts that will need to happen. Aside from the Mi6 crew, another potential decision is the casting of an American ally for Bond to partner with.

Traditional choice would be the return of Felix Leiter. Appearing throughout the series and most recently in Craig's series of films. Felix brings some familiarity with him, In DN he was introduced as someone Bond knew but hadn't worked with. In CR with Craig we saw the friendship progress as they didn't know each other and by the fifth film were fast friends.

Leiter died in NTTD so there is that.

Non-traditional choice would be to create an American ally. The series did this in the Brosnan era with Jack Wade showing up in two adventures. Heck you might even bring this character back for the new guy. Or create a new recurring character to help Bond when action takes him to the USA.

What you rather see in the future of the series?

Felix would be good to establish a new Bond and new era for the franchise.

Thinking Bond is MI6 and Leiter is CIA, so their normal activity is international and outside their home countries. But visiting the US or UK from time to time is welcome.

TBH personally I think it would be too fictional to have an American ally, better skip that until it becomes believable again.

I'd prefer Blofeld was in no more than one, maybe two films. The latest series was correct to have him offed, though it was probably more to do with miscast Waltz more than anything else.

    A better literary character.

I tend to agree. Less is more with Blofeld. Eon overused him.

Also, once they did YOLT film Blofeld with all those tics, they kind of killed the character. Forever.

I'd rather YOLT Blofeld have been a different character (Osato?) altogether. Or if they'd kept him in the shadows for this film too.

Maybe if they kept Jan Werich but dubbed him with Eric Pohlmann the result would’ve been different. It would’ve kept in line with the Blofeld of FRWL and Thunderball certainly.

This. As much as I love Joe Don Baker, the Jack Wade character only made me wish Felix was present in the Brosnan films instead.

A new American ally please. I liked that Jack Wade existed exclusively in the Brosnanian Period. More of that would be good.

Don't get me wrong, I love Felix but do not clamour to see him in every film or era. In fact, after the Craig era I'm hoping to see Bond 7's tenure Leiter-lite. (Would love to see Felix' artificial hand make it on screen though rather than the usual villain's trait.)

A new ally that pops up in a couple films - and they don't have to be CIA either. We've had a few NSA agents here and there.

Felix is usually a pretty dull character in the films I find, the only time I’ve really enjoyed him is in the last few with Wright’s version; I loved the feeling in NTTD that they were actually old friends.
To be honest, if they had to have a US ally character (and agreed with above that that feels a bit strange at the moment) I wouldn’t really care if it’s Felix or not. He has no defining characteristics really, apart from his memorable name there’s nothing actually to him. Wright was great but if he’d been playing a character with a different name I don’t think anyone would have exclaimed ’but he’s playing it just like Felix! Why aren’t they calling him that!?’.

He is not a dull character in the books. The films have NEVER done the character justice!

YOLT was the climax of the Connery era. They could have stopped making movies right then and there.

I don’t find him massively interesting in the books either to be fair. He’s just sort of a nice bloke.

I think there’s actually a lot of ways you can interpret Leiter on film as ultimately he’ll always be Bond’s ‘man from the CIA’. For me I’d want them to reimagine the character. Personally I’d be up for seeing him with a mechanical hand and leg similar to the books, with maybe a bit more of a humorous side to him.

He has his limits, but I do find Bond looking at him in DAF and noting how his injuries have taken a toll on him despite his humour interesting. I like how in the books he has that resilience to him.

Yeah I guess adding in his injuries would give him a bit of something. It would make a nice change to having disfigurement always being a sign of evil in the movies at least.

Lets do something we haven't done before. A would you rather watch battle. This time I am going to run through the Rotten Tomatoes scores of the films and pit 1 vs 2, 3 vs 4, etc. you will tell me which would you rather watch.

We are starting off hot here with a battle of the Connery films:

Would you rather watch GF (99%) OR FRWL (97%)

Wow this is a tough one and should spark some interesting thoughts. We have Connery at his peak here in both. One leans into the fantastical world of being a secret agent and laid many of the foundational aspects of the character, the other a cold war thriller with some nice casting and a wonderful fight aboard a train.

Which one is going on your screen if you were asked to choose?
  • edited May 12 Posts: 2,522
Goldfinger…my new favorite Connery film. I’ve seen FRWL over and over again and while I’ll never stop calling it brilliant, my love and appreciation for Goldfinger has only increased and that’s due to my preference of more, fantastical Bond films as opposed to the more down to earth, grittier fare.
I'd go FRWL as that's my favourite Bond film. But both are great!

    FRWL or GF?

Tough question. It's the old "Revolver/Sgt. Pepper" dilemma for Beatles' fans. Viewed in hindsight, Revolver was a better album (IMO), but there is no question that Pepper was a cultural event. Same with Bond, globally, nothing was ever the same after Goldfinger.

In recent years I've ranked FRWL slightly ahead of GF, so there is your answer.

PS. Good connection @Ludovico: #Noirvember and Bond. "Kitty Collins" and "Pussy Galore"!

I was blown away by the scores of the two films. Wow 99%? Incredible number.

This is a tough one for me and something of a family debate. My Dad, loved FRWL and ranked it as his favourite Bond. Mum preferred GF and said it was her favourite. They both tried to get me to their side. LOL!

If I was forced to choose right now, I would take GF as the lightness would strike a good tone for me. However any other day my answer might be different.
