Buy the church raffle ticket for a trip to Asia, she said. Take a chance, she said. See the world, she said. Get away from the motorboat-gate incident, she said. Forget your troubles for a while, she said.
And what better way to go out than behind the wheel of a V8? After spotting Eleanor in a showroom downtown, the plan was to launch said ve-hicle through the shop window, and lead the po-lice on a wild chase through the streets of Bangkok. Once arrested, he would pretend to protest the decision and use racial slurs just to ensure he didn't get off lightly. Ten fingers on the ink pad, bwoy.
It's something this character would do.
That sounds like a joke where the ticket buyer is ultimately conscripted and sent to Vietnam, while the war still lasted...
Well the war was still going on, so J.W. got off easy I guess.
There is a small comment in YOLT that has always bothered me, actually now that I think about it there are two small comments in YOLT that bother me.
Lets tackle this one first...
Osato and Brandt are summoned to Blofeld. He holds up the x-ray and Osato boastfully remarks that it is a Walther PPK. Blofeld then states "Only one man we know carries a Walther PPK. James Bond."
After Osato throws Brandt under the bus he is charged with killing Bond NOW!!!
What's your theory on why Blofeld says only Bond carries a Walther PPK?
My question is, why does Blofeld say only one man they know carries a Walther PPK? Isn't the Walther standard issue for mi6 at the time? Wouldn't any British agent be carrying the same gun? Or does Bond get a special gun that no others get? Or is Bond the only agent that SPECTRE has had to deal with?
As Fiona would say...questions, questions questions! Who has got answers?
To those who would like a refresher on the scene in question:
Somehow this makes perfect sense.
All others received the larger Walther PP.
So the rest of the agents had bigger PPs. And yes I'm making this up.
But here's how I interpreted it in universe: Blofeld knows in his guts it's Bond. He probably suspected his conveniently timed death was just a charade. The Walther is not proof of anything, anyone could have such gun. But Blofeld knows and to cut it short he just says only Bond uses a Walther. And it's not like anybody in the room would dare to question Blofeld.
Yeah I don't think this would have happened in a Bond film a few years later: British use of PPKs became notorious when a police officer's Walther jammed when a gunman tried to kidnap Princess Anne and he was shot (he survived). PPKs were taken out of service after that.
It's kind of surprising 007 still had one come TSWLM. I wonder if they considered ditching it.
Bond was very famous at the time, which is why they "kill him" at the beginning of the film.
The incident and its consequences were used by John Gardner to explain why Bond changed his pistol in his novels.
So they never dealt with any other British agents but Bond? I understand he says "we". Which would imply that Bond is the only person SPECTRE knows that carries a Walther PPK?
Yeah, that's my vote. He is the only British agent they know.
Anyway, Bond ruined many of SPECTRE's plans. It's normal for Blofeld to be a little paranoid.
We did see the six other 00s get sent after them in the previous film, but I guess it's possible not one of them found any SPECTRE agents.
Yeah I was thinking it is kind of odd Blofeld says something like that and no one questions him.
Pretty surprising. You'd think the workforce would keep their boss informed. And he'd appreciate it.
