Falk and Cassavetes may have handled some of the extra scenes that allowed the episode to be supersized (you can spot them easily, they add nothing to the plot, but they're very fun). Colasanto still appears to have directed the bulk of the episode, and he directed another episode two years later without any interference. If he had allowed the main actors to hijack production, that wouldn't have been the case.

Yes, you're no doubt right. It was just a piece of trivia I read somewhere, possibly on the Columbophile blog. I know there was an extra scene filmed later where Columbo visits Alex Benedict's house and it's a little ponderous in nature as all Columbo wants is an autograph from the famous conductor for his wife. Of course he's snooping around too and seeing what Benedict potentially has to lose. You can tell it was filmed later as John Cassavetes has had a haircut. I believe this scene was added to make the episode one of the longer hour and a half episodes. It is an example of the padding some of these longer episodes of Columbo were saddled with though.

That's not too shabby for a guy with a glass eye:

Only Columbo adjacent, but I'm happy to see that Poker Face returns for a second series in May.

I've seen the first episode of that on Blu-ray as I heard it was somewhat like Columbo. I really need to watch the rest of the first season some time. There was a nice little reference in the first episode where "This Old Man" was playing in the background in one scene. I'm glad to hear it's getting a second series.

I loved it, I would say it found its feet a little more and there are a couple of immensely pleasing episodes in there.

Does anyone else follow or subscribe to "Watch it For Days". Wow tons of information delivered in a clear way. From extras to locations to filming choices she really does a nice job.

You have to devote time as some are over an hour.

I especially like the ones of some of the weaker episodes as it gives me a new appreciation for the lesser stories. Here is one I recently watched:

Yes, @thedove, I've seen that account and am subscribed to her on YouTube. I've not watched any of her videos in full yet but I will as soon as I can. Her videos look very detailed and interesting.

An incredible man (and actor) for sure!

Just now saw your reply from last year regarding Falk's behaviour on set, and the video of Suzanne Pleshette talking about the experience she had working with him on "Dead Weight". That was very interesting – thank you!

It may not be one of my favourites, but "Dead Weight" might be one of the episodes I've seen most times. It's very enjoyable, despite it's flaws.

Loved it, so much fun. It's like a middle-of-act-2, or beginning-of-act-3 kind of scene. Next you know, the YouTube guy will be calling his district attorney friend to get Columbo off his back.

As for the actual show, this scene is so damned great. That "nothing at all" at 4:50 is electrifying. It manages to be casual, curious and threatening all at once.

Hilarious. And almost a fanfic, not a parody.

Oh and sorry if I shared it before, but did anybody ever read Ed McBain's Jigsaw? First 87th Precinct novel I ever read and, well, it has a link to Colombo:

Really interesting. I wonder if there's anything available online of the pre-Falk Columbo?

Yes, happily here it is. It was from the Chevy Mystery Show and was shown live and called "Enough Rope" (1960). As it's live there is the odd fluffed line but it's still very good:

Of course it was later also filmed with Peter Falk as Columbo under the title Prescription: Murder (1968) and that eventually led to a pilot episode and the Columbo series in 1971.

You're welcome. It's definitely worth a watch and is pretty short. It's like the later Prescription: Murder although the solution at the end is different.

I've never seen Prescription: Murder. Another one I'd like to watch, especially for early installment weirdness.

Yes, it's a very good episode. Although there are some differences with the final version of the Columbo character a fair bit of it is already there. Falk is up against guest star killer Gene Barry.

The Scottish comedian Limmy does a truly hilarious improv on a Columbo fan forum dispute regarding the episode "The Conspirators" (1978) which was the last episode of the NBC years:
