    Ha! So by the time we've completed our Folio editions, there'll be more hardbacks to buy.

    The question is - will they be true to the original Fleming text, or neutered for modern audiences?

    Fingers crossed that IFP learned their lesson. Don’t be a George Lucas, IFP, original text please! Also, I hope On His Majesty’s Secret Service is released on paperback in America!

    Pretty much as far as new literary Bond content goes. More a case of old wine in new bottles than anything else. That said I am pleased to hear they'll be a paperback edition of Higson's On His Majesty's Secret Service later this year with added content.

    Oh yeah thank you, certainly something Bond-related. Fingers crossed this is the big one, 007.

    Slight hesitation as 'something special' could just be new editions of something or other.

    My hope is an announcement for a modern day bond thriller from Higson or mcdermitt or silva

    What we will get

    Either another short story comp or reprint

    Or yet another bond from the 60’s book because god forbid we do something modern i mean how much closer to the old cold war do we have to get

    I would love another Higson. It wasn't high literature or anything, but it was just plain fun.

    I think it might not be a new book announcement though.

    Don't jinx us, we had that once this week. It might be Kim Sherwood's 3rd book, as ASLM is getting fairly positive reviews.

    I think it's too early to announce that isn't it? I know she's written it but I think they'd keep that under wraps for a bit longer after the release of no.2

    Well, she has turned it in. We'll see, it sounds like the 3rd book will be released within a year and a half. I know that there were rumors that IFP was looking at a spinoff series and a regular Bond novel series at one time.

    Yeah, as they're publishing them themselves now it would kind of be bonkers not to be running a Bond series if they can. I guess it's not easy though.
    Higson feels like the natural choice as he seems up for it and is also a celebrity name/face so a real boon for the promotion. I hope it is a book, but there's something about the phrase 'something special' which makes it sound more of a treat than a big announcement like that.

    I'm guessing the announcement is going to be this:

    Next up, we’re thrilled to announce that on 6 June, just in time for King Charles’ official birthday, we’ll be publishing a paperback edition of Charlie Higson’s Sunday Times bestselling On His Majesty’s Secret Service. The paperback edition will feature some exclusive new content, and we’ll be sharing the new cover soon. As with the hardback, all royalties from the new edition will continue to go to support the work of the National Literacy Trust.

    Of course it could be something else entirely but it's just my hunch.

    Oh, yes. I thought they had. I just thought they were going to mention it again as publication is coming up but it doesn't make sense to announce that as something new. It must be something else then.

    Higson's novel was alright, but it felt overly topical. Mentions of Orban and Le Pen (without them applying to the story) felt forced and this whole "rise of populism" backdrop combined with the King's coronation puts it quite in the 2020s.
    One thing I found bizarre was him describing the Bond girl as unattractively appealing. Also her whole plastic surgery bit. But he does feel a bit like Gardner in a way, a breezy, readable story with nice prose as well as plot twists and doubling agents

    Yeah, OHiMSS felt a bit like a Gardner novel in many ways. It wasn't for me personally. I understand it's meant to be a very timely story (almost a novelty book in a sense) but I didn't quite feel Higson got Bond down quite right and it wasn't the most satisfying read for me personally, although it was admittedly a very easy one.

    Yes, it did remind me of Gardner's Licence Renewed with the villains' castle. I enjoyed it and welcome another Higson book.

    They could always re-release an edition of TB and call it the NSNA novelisation. A bit childish/pointed, but would be amusing.

    Okay so in hindsight this should've been pretty obvious. It doesn't really compete with Double or Nothing's sprayed edges imo although fittingly it does match His Maj's new portrait. Hopefully it'll last longer than the gold lettering on the hardcover.

    I mainly just excited for the bonus content, I'll always want more Higson but even how topical the book is I wouldn't really want it much longer, I just wish the Bond girl had been fleshed out more.

    On the plus side i am going to read Toys by James patterson its supposedly more action packed then Bond or Bourne so i shall read it and let people know if i want Patterson to write bond

    It seems I was correct then. A lot of good it did me. I still missed out on getting one of the 200 signed and sprayed copies.

    This week, I read Batman’s Villains One Bad Day storylines for certain villains. These included The Riddler, Two-Face, The Penguin, Mr. Freeze, Catwoman, Bane, Clayface, Ra’s al Ghul and The Killing Joke. I think it would be interesting to have a novel of short stories for certain Bond villains like this. Maybe a different author for each character. Also, highly recommended anyone, they are great quick reads. Bond has some iconic villains, they shouldn’t be wasted. Dynamite Comics has proven this.

    Yeah I think a short story collection would be a great idea. Your villains idea is lots of fun, I think lots of 007 short stories could work too (I must admit I kind of prefer the Eon versions of the characters in a lot of instances though: I'd much rather read about Christopher Lee's Scaramanga than Fleming's!). But I don't know if short story collections are more work/money to produce than a novel.

    I'd be happy with more novellas like OHisMSS.
