    RIP Murray Melvin (1932-2023)

Melvin was a major British character actor, with very unique facial features, whose career spanned nearly six decades, getting awards as soon as 1961 for his lead turn in A Taste of Honey, with his final film role in The Lost City of Z.
He played Michael Caine's friend in Alfie, made appearances in many films by his friends Ken Russell (including a more substantial part in The Devils) and Peter Medak, and was an extremely striking presence in Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon, as Lady Lyndon's reverent who silently plots against her new husband.
He was also a fixture on stage and on television, being a guest star on the first episode (lost) of The Avengers.

Sad news. I remember him playing the "killer" in the Christmas 1998 special of Jonathan Creek. He did indeed have a very distinctive face.

Humphries' best gags were having Dame Edna wear a frock with Munch's The Scream on it and having a derro like Les Patterson as the 'Australian Cultural Ambassador'! Brilliant.

Sad to hear of the death of Barry Humphries. I have a signed copy of Dame Edna's autobiography somewhere which I managed to pick up cheaply in a second hand bookshop. He had a great caustic, quick wit with his two characters and even just as himself too.

RIP C*** (I will not give her name), the 16 year old daughter of friends of my wife from uni. I first met her on our wedding day, she was barely a toddler then. We don't have much info, but we think it might be suicide.

    Thank you guys.

It's been confirmed that it is suicide. We're still very much in shock.

My condolences as well, @Ludovico. That's awful that such a young life has ended in that tragic way. Young people nowadays face more pressures and stresses than we can sadly ever know.

Ah, Ludovico, I'm sorry to hear this, mate. My brother killed himself many years ago, I know all too well the awful effect it has on those left behind. So damn sad that such a young lass had come to such a desperate point that she felt this was all that was open to her. It's just awful, mate. Sorry, again.

So sorry, @Ludovico. Suicide always leaves us with many questions that will never be answered, sadly. I wish you all the strength needed in these difficult times.

The great singer, actor and equal-rights activist Harry Belafonte died at the age of 96. One of the truly great persons and artists of the past 70 years.

That's sad. He was one of my favourite. At 96, you can't say this was tragic, but it's a loss nevertheless.

And thank you all for your kind words.

It's lovely indeed, though I must say that it doesn't epitomise Belafonte's personality for me. I was sort of brought up on his Banana Boat Song, Island in the Sun, Matilda and Jamaica Farewell kind of songs. Still I appreciate your posting the Youtube link for this.

The New York Times OBIT for Harry Belafonte.

    https://www.nytimes.com/2023/04/25/arts/music/harry-belafonte-dead.html

In addition to all of his many talents, Mr. Belafonte produced and starred in one of my favorite "classic era" film noirs, ODDS AGAINST TOMORROW (1959) - for which I will post more about on that thread sometime later. Hint: the opening credits are really cool.

AFAIC, the less said about Jerry Springer the better.

I found these clips featuring Harry Belafonte with the Muppets through Facebook. I hope other folks find them as endearing as I do.

And then Harry with Animal. He looks like he's having fun... and that's the way I'd like to remember him!

    RIP Jerry Springer.
There would be few in the early 90's who didn't hear the crowd sprouting 'Jerry.Jerry...'
    on their televisions.
