A Henry Cavill Bond film doesn't interest me to be honest, I've seen Man From Uncle, so I'm confident I know what his Bond would be.

He doesn't have the acting ability to bring out the richness of complexity and contradictions that I love about the best Bond films.
Nothing against him but he'd just be the man in the tux

He's quite wooden despite playing a great Superman I did see the man from U.N.C.L.E a while back and wasn't impressed with him. Although I haven't watched The Witcher is he good in that?

His wooden-ness is an asset for Superman, an alien brand new to Earth, IMO.

It’s clear now that DC is going to start over with a clean slate , James Gunn has said that there is a ,roughly, ten year plan. They are going to be casting a lot of roles, including Superman. EON could end up competing with DC, Marvel, Star Wars, etc. for their lead actor.

If Cavill is so wooden, perhaps he shouldn't have played the Man of Steel, but rather, the Man of Wood. I don't know who that is though. Pinocchio? Or perhaps Bond, considering the amount of women he has bedded.

It makes sense, DC is in rough shape and Gunn proved with Guardians that he can make gold out of nothing. And this opens the door for DC to do some “no way home” shenanigans and bring Cavill in for one. Maybe through Flashpoint Paradox (could bring Affleck, or Bale, or anyone back for Thomas Wayne too).

I don't want the guy making a public spectacle of getting fired. Cavill would torpedo Bond. He's hard to work with behind the scenes, and sucks on camera.

We'll see who they cast as Superman now. The fanboys will want another bland, wholesome, body building hunk like Cavill, since it seems that's how everyone sees Superman (and some people even see Bond that way strangely). If they cast someone a bit more interesting for the role (think Keaton/Pattinson) they'll cry about how is jaw is not square enough and his chest and arms aren't big enough...

I think he'd be an uninspired pick for Bond, to say the least. I don't care if a lot of women like him because he looks like a super model. Bond is more than that. At least to me.

I think Matthew Goode was considered for Superman before Cavill. It would have been nice to see what Goode would have done with it.
I also think Goode would have also been a good Bond.

Cavill may be in with a chance now.

I hope not. He's wooden..Decent Superman but nowhere near calibre of Reeve Or Routh imo. Certainly not right for Bond.

Not a fan of Cavill in general, much less his version of Superman, but it does seem a bit of a mess getting him back only to have the new heads tell him he's out.

I suppose it makes sense - they want to reinvent the franchise without the bad taste of Batman v Superman and Justice League (the latter of which I've actually never seen) in audience's mouths, but I wonder why he was asked to return so soon before Gunn and Peter took charge?
Ignore the rubbish theatrical House Whedon directed version of Justice and check out the 4hr Snyder cut. No classic but a vast improvement.

At least he tallies with the Fleming description. The GQ photo below screams Bond to me.

I agree 100%. IF this is indeed the course they plan to take, I'm good with it.

I'm not sure if he even tallies with the Fleming Bond description in essence though. He's not especially cruel looking, he doesn't look vaguely like Hoagey Carmichael, he's certainly not got the scar on his cheek or comma of hair... I mean, he's got black hair, is about the right age and looks good in a suit, but he doesn't have, say, Craig's distinctive (and what can be described at times/in the right setting as rather cruel) eyes or Connery's rugged features that made him look slightly older than his years.

That's not to say anything about his appearance as he is rules him out as Bond, but neither does it mean anything. Screen presence and demeanour in the role also count.

He may not be EXACTLY like the Fleming description, but he's not that far off. He resembles an image that embodies and typifies what Bond should look like, based on the past 60 years. Tall, white, dark haired, handsome, looks good in a suit, etc.

As long as he can act, appear tough, and ooze charisma as a leading man too, then this pretty much ticks all the boxes required, IMO.

I appreciate there are others out there who want something different, maybe a black actor instead to shake things up, or an actor that doesn't resemble anything like the previous Bond actors to reinvent the character, but I'm pleased and proud to say I'm not one of them.

I want Bond in the mould of what has been emblazoned on our minds and culture since 1962, and if it managed to go even deeper, unearthing Fleming's literary roots too in the process, even better.

In short, The Cadbury's Milk Tray man.

There are many actors who are tall, white, good looking and have dark hair but who probably wouldn’t make very effective Bonds. That’s because there’s much more to the character that they need to convey onscreen.

Fleming’s Bond wasn’t just any good looking guy in a suit either, nor was he the Cadbury Milk Tray man. He’s a professional, a man whose job often boils down to kill or be killed. He’s not some male model in elaborate commercials, but the real thing. Fleming himself even said he really had no concrete idea of what his character looked like beyond the very vague descriptions he’d set up - the hair, the eyes, the scar etc. Even the Hoagey Carmichael reference goes out the window by the later novels and we instead get detailed asides about this man looking ‘cruel’, ‘cold’ - good looking certainly, but someone who looks out of place in settings like a private member’s club for these intangible reasons.

I think the problem some people have with Johnson is that they feel despite broadly fulfilling the superficial qualities of the character, he doesn’t quite have that same edge to him, those same intangible qualities that are not only vital to Fleming’s Bond but Connery’s, Craig’s, Dalton’s and I’d argue even Moore’s Bond. I don’t know how fair that is given none of us have seen him audition, but I can understand this concern having seen some of his other performances. While good looking, I don’t look at his face or into his eyes and immediately have that same sense of enigma, darkness and intrigue I do with Craig, Dalton and Connery especially. I can’t see Johnson turning heads with interest when he walks into a casino, for instance, or a woman eying him up in that cautious but fascinated way, at least not in a way that’s believable.

None of the actors look like Hoagey Carmichael. At all. None have scars on their cheeks, and a couple don’t even have black hair. More than two have had funny hairstyles even in the contexts of their own Bond films. I suspect if Fleming had been able to come up with an image of his hero they wouldn’t have looked like any of the actors. And that’s fine. It just means that the cinematic Bond is more malleable, and beyond the core traits of his character (his Britishness, masculinity, vices, sense of patriotism, bravery, his attitude of a man living as someone who may not return from an assignment etc) he can be shaped based on the film, the context and even the actor’s interpretation, but he’ll always be recognisable as James Bond. I’d argue a reason for this is because the producers will prioritise that intangible edge, that sense of darkness, that special ‘something’ we talk about here so much. The actor doesn’t necessarily have to have blue grey eyes, but their stare needs to give off that same cold but watchful look that’s described in Fleming. It’s better that they do go this route and not just go with an actor who ‘ticks boxes’, otherwise we’d constantly get George Lazenbys or Henry Cavills.

FIRST of all - get the lady another box and give those chocolates to keep the shark at bay !

SECONDLY - do ANY of these younguns generate the interest of Idris Elba ? Not because of the color of his skin, but his presence, height, size, credibility in a fight, etc. If Elba is too for portraying Bond in a few films, who is out there as credible, with the "it" factor going strong ? Anyone who suggests worry-face Richard Madden should please recall the sad comparison that his own character voiced in The Take - a story of a boy and a man. Anyone who suggests Nicholas Hoult should note his toothiness is in the deal, too, and work in some parts, but others ? Does Adrian Turner bring it as strongly as Elba ? Apparently, for some, yes. As for me, I think I'm back to Tom Hilddleston. Tall, built, interesting face. As for his receding hairline, it worked out fine for Connery. You note wisely that no one looks like Hoagy Carmichael other than the man himself. So the point remains - someone with a face with character to go with the height and the build, the movement and the look of genuine ability to win in a fight with a large, strong person as the opponent.

I would look forward to a new Superman though. I just like Superman.
Man of Steel didn't really do it for me, and I'd liked to have seen what Cavill could done with it in a different film, but never mind.

Then what happened "to" him? Guy is making his own decisions. He hasn't been Superman in years. He never had a new contract. If anything truly happened with him, if they truly gave him a verbal promise to return as superman and that's why he quit Witcher, he would be suing. His cameo in Black Adam was last minute and not a contract for more. He got played, a little, but there are years of reports of him being hard to work with. And I didn't call him a loser.

There's a comment that I saw here that many girls like him (Henry Cavill)? I'm a girl and I'm not blinded by the charisma of this guy! Yes, I don't find him handsome, sorry but I'm more looking into face than the body, he's not that handsome for me, he just have that muscular body, but I'm not a fan of muscular men, I mean think of it, Arnold Schwarzenegger is a body builder, but does anyone find him handsome? Are there any girls having a crush on him? 😅

It’s an objective observation based on what is actually known of Cavill’s character and how he he conducts himself on set. My point is that you are misinformed.

Fair. I always find it interesting hearing your thoughts by the way, even if I have something to add or don't agree necessarily.
Has anyone watched the mini-series The English that's on Amazon Prime and stars Emily Blunt? Tom Hughes, who is one of the more interesting candidates to me, is in it. I watched a part of it. His role isn't a particularly Bondian one, but the series does look pretty good.

Ah, it's Hughe's turn to make another appearance. He's a favourite candidate of mine. He was great in The Game where he played an MI5 agent. Reminded me a lot of Dalton's Bond at times in that. I think he'd be interesting.

I don't want the guy making a public spectacle of getting fired. Cavill would torpedo Bond. He's hard to work with behind the scenes, and sucks on camera.

Public spectacle? Far from it, he released a single, gracious statement. No matter what anyone thinks of him on screen, he’s handled this with class.

He quit the Witcher in the middle of season 3 to go be superman, which he announced he was returning, only to now have to announce actually he isn't returning. The guy is a joke in the industry.

    And you are clueless.

Use your words. I thought we were moderating against this type of response.

I think you’re trolling— pls cite sources of Cavill being difficult to work with.

Please don't label me a troll for arguing a counterpoint. I'd rather drop the point than have you all turn against me for nothing. Some of you can grow up and stop acting like you own the place.

Makes it difficult to return to the site. I know Peter is supposed to be a great valued member but he's only ever been combative and accusatory toward me.

For me, it started when Cavill was the only main cast member to not vocally support the Zack Snyder cut of Justice League, until the studio agreed to produce and release it, and then he "switched sides" because it now benefited him. My armchair read of that is kinda scummy.

Then he refused to GET PAID to do a cameo in Shazam, where they got a body double instead, which is him literally giving up the screen rights to the character of Superman willingly. To suddenly play victim that something he owned was taken from him is just objectively unfair to the reality of his decisions. His Black Adam cameo was a desperate attempt by him to hold onto a character he'd given up, and desperate by Warner Bros. to get butts in seats for a bomb of a movie.

And then he walks away from Netflix and the wticher, where he was potentially set up for a Sherlock Holmes movie or series as well, burning that bridge to only get nothing in return. That's what I mean by hard to work with. He's only in business for himself, and I wouldn't trust him not to walk away from Bond, or not give it his all, or make demands once the first one is a hit. He just reads like a hard sell to me. He may be nice one-on-one but I don't want to do business with him, and that's ultimately what we're discussing with Bond.

    I’m speechless…
Or maybe I should say, I’m going to keep my mouth shut.

Same! Have no interest in cavill that way at all.

Sounds like @LucknFate gets his Cavill info from Grace Randolph.
