Reading about QOS, and being reminded of how Craig and Forster almost entirely on their own put together a film that, under the circumstances, is a more than laudable effort, I want to ask the room how everyone feels about another Bond actor getting deeply involved with the production. Do you want Bond 7 to merely play the part as it is written for him by others? Or do you want an actor who works with the producers and writers to put together a good story?

As I said in another thread, I believe that the next Bond actor should have a mix of creative control. I have one more on the fence idea:
Letting the man playing James Bond have how much power. Daniel Craig seemed to get WAY too much of final say on things, it seems. Sean Connery didn’t get much power and that why Cubby and Harry lost him. Another flaw of Cubby’s part. George Lazenby pretty much screwed himself, with the acceptance of doing his own stunts. Roger Moore did Bond mostly for fun. Timothy Dalton got his main request in thankfully: more human approach to the movies. Pierce Brosnan kind of got what Connery got and EON was arguably worse to PB. He had a few ideas that they used, like Paris being a past lover. But they should have been more fair to PB, as he doesn’t seem to look at his Bond time that positively. My point: EON, should give a fair amount of creative control to the person playing Bond. Keep it within fairness, though. Don’t bow down to the actor the way EON did for Craig. Long waits for average movies can drive the biggest supporters away.

I couldn't say better myself especially the last sentence. I feel like that's what we have been getting at least with these last two films. What annoys some is they show case all these cars like the vantage and all their for is to travel to one place to the next. When we're the days when the cars were in action set pieces now they are just for show it just seems lazy. I was looking forward to the vantage and the db10 in a awesome action set piece. You get that with Tom cruise in his movies (cough) mission impossible. They just don't seem to care anymore.

On the one hand it would be ridiculous for Eon to say they have to take a couple of years to reinvent the character and then do the same thing they did with Craig. On the other hand, they can sometimes be a bit ridiculous...

I do believe the aim for the first film should be - to use a sports term - to get some points on the board. Contrary to some of the sentiment being shared here (and that I used to go with) I am currently no longer of the opinion that they should now plan a multi-film story arc. For the first one, just nail the basics. Good casting obviously and then make sure the action is spot-on, there are some good acting moments for our new man and a hopefully memorable supporting cast and lay down a stylistic template to follow in terms of costumes, sets and cinematography. No need to seed 4 stories. No need to make a grand declaration about the state of world politics or the national sentiment in the UK or whatever. No need to re-invent action filmmaking. Just get a well-made film out the door that shows this franchise is still going strong.

Personally, I'd like to see a return to the classic formula, no ongoing theme and the less peripheral MI6 characters the better.

WRT my last point, basically, M briefs Bond, Bond flirts a bit with Moneypenny, gets kitted out by Q and that's them done until the next film.

The only actor I felt had a worthwhile contribution working with the production team was Tim Dalton, mainly because he was such a huge fan of the novels, and wanted a return to something in that tone.

If we get another actor like Tim (big fan of the books) then I would be all for it. I felt Brozza didn't really understand the character so went for something in the middle of Rog and Sean, and Craig wanted to take the character towards something he thought was the right direction, even if it wasn't completely in line with Fleming, and the producers bent over backwards to accommodate him (too much, IMO).

If we have good writers then I feel it wouldn't really matter. Good writers will make good stories irrespective of who's playing the part. All that I want from a leading man is to take that material and then elevate it.

I’m not going to lie, if more Bond 26 process is announced at the end of the year, or at the various celebrations, there is one announcement that would disappoint me. That being the obvious: that Purvis and Wade are working on a script. That means no reinvention in the number one area that needs it most. That would be more disappointing than getting no news as all.

I think they’re solid and dependable. Not amazing with dialogue but they understand Bond and his world, so I think it makes sense to keep their number in case they’re ever needed for a quick salvage job. But yeah, I really don’t think they should be the first writers hired anymore. They’ve written some of my favourites but I’m really not sure what they have left to say at this point. I’d like a completely fresh perspective for the next one.

Race against time is right - Roger Mitchell said he baled on directing QOS because EON had a release date but no script! Then they junked Paul Haggis's completed script and he had to not only start again from scratch but had to complete a new first draft script before the start of the writers' strike - which he apparently managed to do with literally a couple of hours to spare! Marc Forster then asked BB and MGW to postpone the film until the writers' strike was over, but got the knock-back because the release date was set. That's also why they gave him 6 weeks to edit it instead of the usual 12-13 weeks. With all this, it's amazing that they got anything finished, let alone something as unremittingly brilliant as QOS!

How about an introductory film whereby Bond has already received his mission and has begun it when the film starts. No actual M, Q or Moneypenny in the film, and we (the audience) uncover the mission as we go. Maybe have them feature via email messages if needed for plot advancement, but have Bond be a pure lone wolf, out on his own.

I would really love this. It's more suspenseful when Bond is alone.

Yeah I like this idea too, I think it’d be a nice way to strip things down and make Bond more of an enigma again, especially if they took some cues from the TSWLM novel and told the story from the girl’s perspective. You could have a PTS showing the beginnings of some evil scheme, tell the story from the perspective of a woman who’s found herself involved in it, and then through her eyes introduce the new Bond as an enigmatic figure who’s already on his mission, ready to sort it out. I think that’d be a cool introduction. It’d make him feel more mysterious and spyish, it’d be a nice palette cleanser after a few London heavy films, and gives them a nice sequel hook to grab a few headlines (bringing back M/Q/Moneypenny again).

There's a lot of good stuff in the TSWLM novel, especially when it comes to Viviane. While I'm not sold on having a Bond film told completely from the girl's perspective, they could certainly adapt parts of the novel, however loosely. You could have Bond stepping in and saving her at the beginning in a similar fashion to the novel. Have a time jump afterwards and perhaps show the Bond girl once again becoming involved in another scheme by the same villains. She actively seeks out Bond for help. Ideally the subtext of the novel about Bond's morality/how similar he is to those involved in danger/crime is retained though.

It'd be nice if the next actor - and I'd argue the director too - reads the Fleming novels. I'm not saying they have to be completely faithful to everything in there, just that they understand how these stories work, what they want to emphasise about Bond as a character from the source material etc. It's an important part of 'reinventing' Bond for this stretch of the 21st Century I'd argue.

Wait - what ? What about the mission !??! Just kidding. I expect that between "...by Q" and "that's them done until the next film" there would be the mission ? On which M briefed Bond and for which Q provisioned Bond ? Although. In terms of just getting re-centered, like on a GPS map while driving somewhere, well, yeah, you nailed it.

I've heard Barbara Broccoli is trying to tempt Daniel Craig back for one "final" outing. The exciting script is set during the "missing" 5 years after James Bond retired to Jamaica. It is a love story between a burnt out spy and a 60 year old widow. It is set entirely inside Bond's Jamaican retreat with over 2 hours of love scenes! Rumour has it Barbara Broccoli has been taking acting lessons, so read into that what you will!

I've been saying they should do a one-man-play about those five years. Your version sounds like it would have to be staged in Amsterdam or Hamburg. I don't think they do shows of that nature in New York or London anymore.

There was always something "wooden" about Craig's acting. But for this show, having wood would be essential.

Nice guess, however...no...giving you one more guess. It dates to 2005 (the year before CR was released). I did not use the term "constantly" casually...

Ooooooooooooohhhh....OK. But, no mention of she who WOULD be named, as DCraig's wife ? Rachel W is in The Constant Gardener with RFiennes - the future M to her real-life future husband, long before she appeared in a (well, not quite really) Jason Bourne film and long before she started checking Bond's equipment even more thoroughly than Major Boothroyd.

I'm not sure there is anything really new here, except the mention of 3 films.

    https://movieweb.com/james-bond-producers-looking-for-a-younger-actor-to-resurrect-franchise/

Could this mean a Blofeld Trilogy is perhaps being thought of? I would love to see a longer SPECTRE arc and feel it really could be cool to see it on the big screen. I am not suggesting remakes of TB, OHMSS, YOLT. But having three films where Blofeld is the man in the shadows for the first one, becomes the main villain for the middle and the unknown villain of the last one. Course it would potentially leave things with a hell of a cliffhanger.

Me too. I just wonder if Charmian Bond or May could become regulars. Reason being that Bond as a film series seems to be becoming more of a ensemble cast. Maybe Alec Trevelyan as a villain being built up as well? Or a old villain returning? Maybe Raymond Benson’s The Union Trilogy could be adapted for the big screen.
