I feel like Craig being bulky in Casino was a way to show off the new actor in the role, especially given that it was the complete opposite to Brosnan.
I don't see that being a requirement for a new actor, but more in line with how Daniel looked in Quantum or Skyfall, in great shape but more lean

Yeah, Craig’s build bod is a little silly to me, because a spy like James Bond wouldn't be able to maintain that physique,

Fleming's Bond does 20 push ups, legs lifts, toe touches and breathing exercises each morning. I've been doing that for decades and still don't have Craig's physique.
However, if I lay off the junk food I can just achieve Sir Roger's build in TSWLM with that work out.

New headcanon: Bond was in some kind of administrative hell in between being cleared for 00 status and before his very first 00 mission (CR), where all he could do was work out like a maniac. By the time he is back in full rotation and working normal missions the physique becomes more reasonable, because he doesn't have the time anymore.
And after his "death" in SF he is obviously practicing the scorpion routine all day to impress the lads at the bar at night. No time to do wind sprints on the beach. Comes back to bite him later.

This has been discussed and I always find it amusing when some describe Craig's physique as that of a bodybuilder, or being "bulky" Even in Casino Royale Daniel Craig is functionally athletic; he is muscular and lean but in no way oversized.

The Ocean Club scenes were filmed during the same time frame. When he first arrives at the resort he looks trim, lean and fit, as he does while sitting at his computer in his villa. Some site him as being "massive" and "bulky" when he comes out of the water; he's neither and is in the same shape as all of the other scenes. If he does appear bigger it's because of lighting. how he's framed in the shot. He did not "bulk up" for the shot.

Craig's Bond comes from a different background than the previous incarnations; his Bond is rooted in special forces. If anyone has ever met anyone who comes from this branch of the service, it's clear that Daniel's physique is completely realistic.

In a recent interview Martin Campbell confirmed that 8 actors were actually screentested for CR; we know, obviously, Craig and Cavill. He also named Sam Worthington and Goran Visnjic. Who are the other 4 to actually be screentested?

Campbell teased Cavill for being too chubby, apparently. Really glad Craig was cast in the end.

Alex O'Loughlin I know was one

Yes, I think O'Loughlin must have been one.

Wikipedia has (apart from the others already mentioned) Rupert Friend, Julian McMahon, Clive Owen and Dougray Scott as having been up for the role, though I don't know if they all screen-tested. I suspect Owen as the favourite at the time tried to play hardball about money right off the bat, and perhaps didn't make it to an audition.

Campbell says 8 tested, of the names above I think McMahon may have also been one.

I always had bias for McMahon because I loved Nip/Tuck. Even though he's Australian, I won't lie, I would've dug seeing him as Bond (or hell, even his screen-test).

Being able to , with charm, pull off cavalier as well as cruel, he definitely could have done well in the role.

Yeah I don’t think Owen was involved. From memory Karl Urban and Anthony Starr were both looked at, I can’t recall if they were known to have been tested though.

I've only seen him as Dr Doom and I thought he was terrible. Didn't he also got too public about wanting the role?

About Clive Owen, I'm still wondering what people find in him.

Julian McMahon was Michael Wilson's choice but Barbara had edge on him with Craig.
I didn't know that, it's interesting. As much as I like Craig a lot, especially since Skyfall, insofar as he get older, his physique, notably his facial features, lends himself more to the role, McMahon would certainly have been a more Bondian choice. To be honest, I would have loved to see this: the same Casino Royale, but with this alternate choice.

I wasn’t even aware he screen tested to be honest. Is there a source of proof for this?

He's on the list of candidates we knew of at the time (the people reporting it seemed pretty sure and I remember they'd even said they'd seen a couple of the tests); the ones we know (and it seems not all of them tested):

    Gerard Butler

Sounds like it might have been down to Craig, Cavill, Friend and possibly Worthington, but it seems less certain how that went down.

Here are the ones we know they were interested by at the time.

@Ludovico, can't really fault him for being eager about getting such an iconic role, but I do know that's put a damper on prospects in the past for some other candidates.

In addition to Julian McMahon, Goran Visnjic, Alex O' Laughlin, Henry Cavill, Sam Worthington, , Dougray Scott, etc , James Purefoy was also mentioned several times as a potential choice. Not sure if he actually tested, though.

For me, both lists are dire.

But I'm hoping for another second coming, straight out of left field. In Babs I trust ;)

As long as they don't reboot Bond as a youngster starting out as a rookie agent, and as long as they don't serve up their intelectual property to political or social agendas, we'll be fine. Just keep coming back to Fleming, as MGW always says.

In that new Martin Campbell interview on James Bond Radio, he says he thinks they'll find someone close to Fleming to replace Craig.

Yes I still believe the eventual candidate is someone not on most peoples radar right now. An obscure, relatively unknown actor, and someone that still fits in line with most people's vision of what you imagine James Bond to be (going by the previous actors that played Bond), rather than what a modern day Bond could be, yet bearing little or no resemblance to Fleming's original description.

It's not just MGW that always says go back to Fleming. This was Cubby's mantra too, and thankfully also his daughters view.

I think he has to fit the films: be handsome, tough, suave, good with humour, a great film lead. Ideally a bit sexy for people to swoon over. Beyond that I’m not sure how you get ‘close to Fleming’.

Same here. I could easily have seen West or Purefoy as Bond. Based on the pictures above and the pictures alone I think Daniel Goddard might have worked. Maybe Alex O'Lachlan too. But I don't know how good actors they were.

Certain facial expressions on Alex O'lachlan remind me of Jeremy Piven.
I was never really sold on Julian McMahon, but compared to the likes of Theo James and Timothee Chamalet, he comes across like Connery in his prime.

If EON is going for a Fleming Bond as Campbell claims, then who could be on the shortlist?

Close to Fleming's description is probably what Campbell meant, rather than the literary personality - that ever brooding, Imperialistic 1950's fussy introvert.

And we've had the Fleming description in some form or other with all previous actors - Dalton & Brozza being the closest match, and the others tallying in up in either hair or eye description, so I'm not sure how you can get too easily misled by a passing comment of `being close to Fleming.'

You know Campbell didn't mean Babs is on the lookout for an actor that fits the personality trait of Fleming's Bond, or at least I hoped you would.
