I’m hopping for a mid 60’s setting even if it involves mild de-aging.

My total guess is 1969. Maybe we should all pick a year as a (no cash) sweepstake! :D

1964. Classic clothes. Cool cars. Lots of style. Can see Indy fitting into that world. "Goldfinger" playing in the cinema. Indy does a double take, "James Bond sure looks like my dad!"

I'd love it to be 1968, but my hunch is 1970.

I'd forgotten that Mangold said in January that 'all of the films' he's working on are set in 60s New York.

The early 60’s has an incredible aesthetic, think “ Mad Men” . The late 60’s started to become gaudy and social unrest was at a peak.

Plenty can look good in the late 60s though: think Steve McQueen.

I'll split your opinion right down the middle here and go with 1965, when men wore underwear with the poster for Thunderball printed on it. Lovely stuff.

Apparently the latest person to be cast might well be our very own Mads...

I like that. He seems like a great bit of casting for an Indy.

Awesome. Great to see the gears finally starting for Indy 5.

A fine tradition continues ! Some of the Indy film's finest casting has involved Bond folks: Sean Connery, John Rhys-Davies (though he appeared first in ROTLA before TLD), Phoebe Waller-Bridge and, now, Mads Mikkelson. There may be others whom I missed, and this does not include off-screen talent, to all of whom I would apologize for my neglect.

Well Julian Glover is the most obvious similarity (if Mads is playing the villain, which it seems likely he is!)

Plus Glover was in Star Wars too, just as Mads was. He just needs to do a Doctor Who to match him... :D

  • Mads is a busy man, also replacing Depp in the Fantastic Beasts series. I'm glad Bond snagged him first 15 years ago. Has any other actor appeared recently in this many franchises? Bond, MCU, Star Wars, Wizarding World, and now Indiana Jones?
  • Cast is shaping up nicely.

Wow! This cast is getting impressive! Mads AND Dan? :D
Edit: Craig was in an episode of Young Indiana Jones Chronicles

I’m honestly not surprised that Mads has joined Indy. He’s everywhere now! I’m still expecting a return announcement for John Rhys-Davies and Karen Allen. It seems a lot of Lucasfilm alumni are coming back for this one.

I think Craig would have worked well with Ford in this latest Indy. Their palpable chemistry in Cowboys & Aliens was what made that film better.

Karen Allen seems a shoo-in (even if it's just a cameo), Rhys-Davies I can take or leave. If there's a spot in the story for him, sure, but I don't need to see Sallah every time.

Yes I must admit I rather liked the idea! :)

Cowboys & Aliens was good but not great; at the time I remember leaving the theater thinking that I would have enjoyed the movie as a straight western without the aliens.
Ford and Craig had great chemistry.

I liked the aliens stuff but I admit I'd happily watch Craig and Ford in a straight up western: Craig especially did the man-with-no-name thing really well. And obviously Ford has no trouble with 'gruff'! :D
In a way it's hard not to think Craig should have been a bigger star than he has been. Still, I guess even Connery had a bit of a flat spot until he was around the age Craig is now: maybe it's coming.

Even though it's kind of intrinsically a bad idea to do Indiana Jones at nearly 80 years old, is it weird I'm kind of more excited for this film than any other that's coming up? Kind of because, with the age thing plus Mangold and the obviously quality cast he's building, I just have no idea where it's going; but it's suddenly featuring people at the peak of their game.
It may well be rubbish, and it's not going to be a proper pure Indiana Jones experience because it's compromised in so many ways, but it's damned interesting isn't it?
