Gadgets in skyfall

Does anybody know if gadgets are returning for SF? I know Q (I refuse to call him B even if they do decide to name him that) is back but will he be giving Bond gadgets or not? I really hope if they do return Bond gets more than something stupid like a hacker phone.

I seem to remember reading something similar on MI6 at some point in time and it appears there will be a handful of things for Craig to experiment with, nothing too drastic, I remember reading just a few basic items to get him through. I will always insist I was less than thrilled about having some kid in the part of Q for the next release, but what can you do :-<

Expect something similar like Tomorrow Never Dies, a sort of 1997 items list of today, i.e cell phone with some additions, car modification, little items to help him through his mission, nothing too extravagant etc

@Baltimore_007 I agree with you about the new Q, I think he's too young. I was really hoping for John Cleese to return, he did a great job in DAD.

Cleese doesn't "fit" this era of Bond IMO.

    Do explain why not?

Cleese would add a little lightness the Craig-era could well use. imho

    O:-)

I'm a great fan of Cleese. I agree when you say he should come back.

I'm open to anything really. But basically an older man should play Q or (Major) Boothroyd. One sneak peek from the movie I'm dying to see is how this Q, who's only 4 years my senior, works within the movie and how the chemistry is between him and older Bond.

At least this Q has had shot at that annoying 007, who never returns his equipment in in pristine condition.

@SharkBait, I agree an older man should most certainly play Q, but then again, the Q we are receiving now could be a whiz kid who is well ahead of his age in terms of smarts.

Should be interesting to see. Perhaps Bond will underestimate him, in terms of his age, and then we are shocked to see that he can return the banter he receives.
  • I remember during Brosnan's era that his interactions with Q were sometimes sad in my opinion because Bond was picking on an old man. Now there may be the problem of Bond picking on a kid.

I don't think Bond was picking on him. Just the same back and forth teasing as always. I liked Brosnan and Q, in TWINE when he says he might retire Bond looks really sad for a moment. He also worked well with Cleese Q.

Oh I didn't feel that way at all! I loved the interaction between Brosnan's Bond and Q. I thought there was a fondness to it, it was affectionate. Quite positive for me.

I thought Llewelyn and Brosnan had that certain chemistry together, a sort of camararderie not seen with the other Bond actors. Whenever I watch The World Is Not Enough and Desmond appears as Q (For what we now know will be the last time) and you watch his final scenes since his first appearance in the early 1960s, you can't help but feel a bit moved, there's something quite disturbing about the way in retrospect he makes his James Bond exit going down into the ground, maybe all a bit silly but you can't help but notice sometimes. Best Q ever, no-one will ever come close

Cleese came in, at first glance you think to yourself, 'It's him off of Fawlty Towers' and you do question is it a suitable replacement, but he didn't do that badly, they kicked the character out of Casino Royale and QOS, and now lo and behold, chopping and changing going wild, Q will be back for Skyfall and it's some junior replacement - I really would of liked to have seen Cleese back :-<

I'm fine with a young Q. They know they can't replace Desmond so they aren't trying.

I suppose it depends on the age of participants but all I saw was Llewelyn and it's who I instantly recognize, I don't think they're trying to emulate the man but please at least find someone suitable, this kid they've brought in, is simply unsuitable for the age he is, but Bond is moving with the times and I guess we have to, even if some will object etc

They're still replacing him, because it's still Q, he's just young for some reason. Desmond will always be the best but Cleese did a great job.

Desmond wasn't old when he debuted. He just looked old. I think he was 49 to Connery's 33. Wishaw is 32 to Craig's 44.

If he is supplying new equipment to 007? I would guess its around relatively plausible stuff to do with the Gun, Phone, Watch, and maybe the car?

I never disagreed :) I'm interested. I'm not one to think of Q as essential based on CR and QoS, so hopefully they're bringing him in for an important reason. It's likely comedic relief, which I'll be open to if they pull it off.

I don't care that they new Q will be young. It might be an interesting new take on the inter-play between the characters. I happy for some comic light relief but I would imagine it will be very much on the light side. Also it would be fun for Bond to have a gadget or two again as long as they are not absurd.

I disagree. In our modern times who are the computer and electronic genius? Not the old guy, but the younger guys. It is common for the kid to teach the parent how to use their smart phones.

@jaguar007, that's what I always thought: you could have the old veteran of sorts who has known everything about gadgets for decades, or you could have the younger whiz kid who picks up on everything in minutes. Works both ways for me.

To be pedantic, Desmond and Cleese played different characters with the same job title. They can’t have been the same character they appeared together in TWINE. It’s the same as Dench and Lee being different characters that have both had the position of M.

  • If 32 is a "kid" does that make my 38 a teenager? I suddenly don't feel like I'm getting old anymore...:-)

Though Cleese did a respectable Q with Brosnan he would stick out like a sore thumb with Craig, especially if he kept that same style. We're beyond that type of Q now and thank god! Though Cleese was passable and somewhat refreshing in DAD, the whole Bond/Q interaction in the last 20 years has been in large part forced, campy and to be perfectly honest, boring! He became this staple that had to placed in every movie no matter how unnecessary or inappropriate it was. They (Q and Moneypenny) should be characters like Felix Leiter, if it fits the story then include them, otherwise leave them out! We are 23 movies in and likely not ending any time soon so for me the "need" to include them is not there. I cringe at some of the Brosnan/Llewelyn interactions to be honest.

I understand some Bond fans need a checklist in order to enjoy or consider a Bond movie good but not me. Reintroduce the character and mix it up in whatever way is necessary to fit the script and to make the roll interesting. Whether his name is B or Q, I could care less as long as he brings something new and exciting to the character.

@Vancouver007, you know what I mean. A "kid" in comparison to Desmond, I suppose.

I said that, not @JWESTBROOK. And yeah I know they're different people, but they act similar, they're both old and they're both Q, so he is still replacing them.

I have no problem with Q I just don't want to see any outrageous gadgets. Like invisible cars, some of the crap they gave Rogrer Moore (and to a lesser degree, Sean Connery).

As for age, Desmond first appeared in FRWL and he was what? 49 and Sean was 33...
I have not seen the new Q but hopfully he is a senior agent with some miles and experience under his belt. IMO

I don't think he fitted any era. He played the character way too comedic anyway. Llewellyn's Q was funny because he was serious.

I am not certain about a "young" Q, but 32 is not a child.
