I see what you mean @00Beast, and FRWL is going undefeated.

Yes indeed Brady, yes indeed! As far as I know, the only movies it has gone up against thus far is Thunderball and On Her Majesty's Secret Service. I can't recall any others; perhaps we need to put some more experience miles on ol' FRWL!

Perhaps FRWL needs to be thrown into the mix again very shortly?

    Both in my top ten:
But Dr. No has something special, so Dr. No it is.
    8. Casino Royale
    7. For Your Eyes Only
    6. On Her Majesty's Secret Service
    5. Dr. No

    Casino Royale, please.

It only wins by the smallest of margins. Connery and Wiseman defined their respective roles, setting the bar very, very high for those following.

My word what a toughie. Two very Flemingesque films. Though CR has been updated rather alot.
I really do love both of these films, but as there can be only one winner...

    Doctor No

As many have said, both are great films, and I absolutely agree. However, while they may both be great movies, because of the almost fifty years that separate them, they are possibly the two most different Bond movies you can find. Also, they both represent a genesis, as Dr. No began the series, and Casino Royale re-started it. Deciding between them is thus made very difficult, and while it is not a conclusion which I have made lightly, I’m going to have to side with Dr. No because it is the better Bond movie. It started a trend which would lead to larger than life films like Goldfinger and Thunderball, while Casino Royale has started a different trend which sees Bond facing more realistic villains and fighting more like Bourne than Bond, and this direction has shown in Quantum of Solace. Skyfall may reverse this trend, but until this November I can’t say I really love the direction CR has taken the series.

    The results are in!

    CR- 23 votes
    DN- 15 votes

Daniel Craig's debut has trumped Sean Connery's debut by eight votes!

    Next round begins now:
    Thunderball vs. Octopussy
  • Octopussy has grown on me in recent years and is advancing in my rankings. But TB is a Connery classic and my first Bond movie, so...Thunderball!

The best reigns through the storm. Congrats CR!

Do I really need to say? TB! Rog can't compete with almighty Sean, looking about as cool as a man could in very casual tropic wear, and TB has brilliant fight scenes underwater, which I find exciting and not boring like some do for some reason. The plot makes you feel how risky it is, and that is great when you watch the film and think "holy crap, this is serious". The set where all the 00 meet is one of my favorite sets of the franchise, if not my top favorite, and that moment is more epic that anything OP has to offer. TB also has the best one-linees of the entire Connery era, in my opinion. Everything from "she's just dead" to "his wife probably lost her dog", the quips are class acts, and always give me a huge chuckle. Also in TB, we have Bond shot and limping vulnerably, and actually see fear in his eyes, played brilliantly by Sean. Domino is very beautiful, as is Martine Beswick, back to play an equally pretty sacrificial lamb. I just love TB, it's so much fun, and from the start of the brilliant PTS to the conclusion with Bond and Domino being pulled through the sky, it is an amazing film made all the better by the best Bond. No question this week.

It's 4-nil already! I wonder if this one is already decided.

    Octopussy

Better 007? Check. More thrilling action? Check. Better villains? Check. Better pace? Check! Enough to make OP take the win for me? Check.

Thunderball by miles. It's perhaps one of the top three best ever Bond movies! Octopussy is good, but only fair by comparison.

I think this has already been done, 00Beast. From February 19:

Sorry for the delay, and yes, I'd say that OHMSS wins this by a landslide. The next round begins at this very moment, again very sorry for the delay.

    Thunderball vs. Octopussy

Anyhow, my answer is the same as before:
Both great and both dealing with a nuclear bomb scheme by the villains. OP is certainly one of the best and most entertaining Bond films made post-1960s. However, the 4th Bond film represents 1st generation 007 cinema at its apex with Connery and Young at the top of their form as well as the best bad girl in the series with Miss Paluzzi.

I vote for my all time Bond favorite: TB

genuinely surprised that Casino Royale was an eventual winner over Doctor No

As for this, it took me about six seconds to decide that Thunderball was the overall winner, but Octopussy is tough to beat on action, Connery's fourth outing seems half the time spent on dull, boring, underwater battles, but for the rest of the time, is a damn good adventure with lots of interesting characters and action bits and Connery does very well, a definite minimum on the nonsense humor of Moore in '83, that's one reason why I would choose it ahead of Octopussy, i.e. a straight faced, entertaining, (for the most part), Bond release with a plausible James Bond, one of the best ever etc

Octopussy. A very underrated movie and much more enjoyable than TB. Despite being a big Connery fan I have always felt TB is one of his worst outings, only just beating DAF. It has always struck me as undeserving of its classic status. Awful song too.

OP has an OTT but very entertaining first act and just keeps on getting better to deliver one the very finest climaxes in the entire series. TB's ending is laughably weak. IMO YOLT was a much welcome return to form after such a dull entry.

I don't feel Octopussy is that underrated. It seems it used to be the go-to excuse for the film and by the public it may be but not the hardcore Bond fans. I find many around here like or love it and realise it's a great film. I do, I just happen to prefer Thunderball.

Wow, thanks for catching this PKK! Looks like my memory is fading on these! Hahaha. Well, I guess we can say safely that Thunderball was our winner in one of the shortest rounds yet!

Okay, new match-up! Sorry for the confusion, and thanks to PKK for catching my mistake again.

    Let's try

FRWL. Not too much competition in my mind, as much as I admire Dalts.
It's extremely close for me, as both are in my Top Five, but I'm going to have to pull for License to Kill. Only my most recent viewing last week of LTK has made me say this. After that viewing, I moved LTK into position #2 which FRWL used to occupy, and placed FRWL at #3, so no real harm done. Overall, the action and pace is more entertaining, as well is the soundtrack, which I think is somewhat under-rated. Also, I'm compelled to say that Dalton has a wee bit better performance in LTK than Connery in FRWL, though it is nail-biting close. Now, From Russia with Love has the better villains and plot, but I still hold true to my vote.

LTK. Better villain, better Bond, better girls, better story and an all round better film. My favourite in the series.
