I read a couple of the Christin/Mezzieres albums in the 70s/80s. I wasn t a huge fan, but they weren t bad. Just a bit boring. This 2017 film is rather entertaining and spectacular on a tecnical level.

I agree, @Thunderfinger. The film was very poorly received but I had a lot of fun with it, in a trippy sort of way. ;)

It has many of the typical Besson trademarks. Bizarre and colourful.

Sherlock Holmes A Game of Shadows

Each time I watch this film I am suprised at how good the movie is. I know I am in the minority in liking the Guy Ritchie Holmes movies I find them extremely enjoyable especially the sequel.. in fact Guy Ritchie directing Bond he was rumored for one of the films recently bond 23 or 24... I would love it if he directed a bond film...

The idea of a game of chess being the climax is really cool

    DJANGO (Sergio Corbucci, 1966)

Corbucci was a spaghetti western pioneer. All the ingredients are in place here in this film. Pretty great.

    Pearl Harbor

Wow this movie is one cliche after another... my wife’s pick

Sigh I can see where this is going a mile away

The battle scenes are cool I guess but the main three are so unbelievable and frankly unlikeable it hurts the movie

And yet, @Risico007, I would argue that Pearl Harbor is still a faaaar better film than yesteryear's MIDWAY. That one was just painful and silly.

Knives Out I figured it out immediately, the plot was not particularly clever. Saying that the cast are great especially Craig and De Armes, the film is a lot of fun. I did like the call back...
to knowing the difference between a prop and a real knife at the end.

My 3rd favorite film of all time and the film that made me fall in love Ingrid Bergman, who quickly became and remains today my favorite actress ever, and fall in love with classic cinema as a teen about 25 years ago.

@Thunderball. I'm seen "Casablanca" too many times to count over the years. It is like the gateway drug to learning (and enjoying) classic films.

Flash Gordon” (Mike Hodges, 1980), with Sam Jones, Melody Anderson, Max von Sydow (NSNA), Topol (FYEO), and some guy named Timothy Dalton 😊! The Bond connections are many in this movie as even Robbie Coltrane (GE, TWINE) has a brief role at the beginning. The soundtrack is by Queen – and that is a very good thing!

Surprisingly enjoyable. It almost plays like an extended episode of the old Batman (Adam West) TV show. And the script was indeed written by Lorenzo Semple Jr, who wrote for that show in the 1960s. I probably saw this movie on TV in the mid 1980’s.

BTW: The producer for this film, Dino De Laurentiis (1919 – 2010), is the grandfather of celebrity TV chef Giada De Laurentiis.

BTW: Interesting similarities between Sam Jones’s post FG career and Lazenby’s post OHMSS.

Decent adaption of Christie's Masterpiece, it has an excellent cast including Gert Frobe, Adolfo Celi and a cameo voice over from Orson Welles. Its not my favorite version though I watched this numerous times in my youth.

Elevator to the Gallows” (Louis Malle/1958) starring Jeanne Moreau and featuring a music score by the legendary Miles Davis.

This was screened on Turner Classic Movies last week as an example of foreign Film Noir. Quite atmospheric and I really enjoyed it – especially the “film processed” final. A question for those of you much more knowledgeable about these things than me (i.e., everyone 😊): is this movie considered “French New Wave”? Interested, since the film’s hosts stated that there is some controversy regarding this.

Overall, I may revisit “Elevator to the Gallows” in the future. Perhaps as a nice rainy Sunday afternoon double feature with “Breathless” (1960).

    Great film, beautiful car!

The consensus seems to be that Elevator to the Gallows is a precursor to the New Wave. Malle is usually not grouped with the French New Wave directors (Godard, Truffaut, Rohmer, Rivette), though he was producing innovative films at the same time. Furthermore, many French critics and American auteurists were very snobbish toward Malle and held his versatility and independence against him.

Three Days of the Condor (1975 Sydney Pollack)
Watched this in tribute to the late Max Von Sydow
(Though i could have, like Dwayne, watched Flash Gordon as he's great in that too!)
Gripping conspiracy thriller with Robert Redford as the C.I.A. bookworm whose workplace is decimated by Von Sydows hit team in a brilliant opening scene, afrer his character, Turner (codename Condor) unwittingly uncovers a secret! He then goes on the run, with the aid of Faye Dunaways lonely photographer to piece things together, all the while trying to stay ahead of Von Sydows wily killer! Pollack directs well, and stages a thrilling fight sequence in Dunaways apartment,
as Turner uses all his wiles to outwit his opponents .
Good cast, with John Houseman and the alwatmys excellent Cliff Robertson!
Always though that Redfords character in Tony Scotts thriller 'Spy Game' was an extension of his part here!

Watched Knives Out (2019) for the second time. Such a great film, and plays better the second time. Picked up on a lot of dialogue that I missed the first time round. I think Marta Cabrera is an excellent character, and probably my favourite new character from last year.

    "Lost in Translation" -

a great film but I can see it would be slow for many, European in style. Superb performances, easy to forget how talented SJ is. And I had forgetted the lovely reference to Roger Moore during the photo shoot scene :-)

Somewhat belatedly: For me, Red October is a gem and one of the very few movies that I like to rewatch several times. Must be about five so far. The very best of the Jack Ryan films...and that's not saying I prefer Alec Baldwin over Harrison Ford.

Agreed, @j_w_pepper! I prefer Ford as Ryan but Red October is my favourite film in the series. In fact, the ranking is easy for me:

    1) The Hunt For Red October
    2) Patriot Games
    3) Clear And Present Danger
    4) The other two

I like it, but Krasinski isn't a great Ryan.

I echo the love for Red October, though. McTiernan does claustrophobia well, and the performances are great.

I absolutely love Red October. One of my three favourite non-Bonds from Sean:

    1. The Name of the Rose
    2. The Hunt for Red October
    3. Murder on the Orient Express

Still have to watch some of what is considered his best work, like The Man Who Would Be King, though.

Oh, you should really see The Man Who Would be King, marvellous film. Connery and Michael Caine are a great double act! Well directed by John Huston. Theres a great story that during filming Huston became ill, and was hospitalised, Connery and Caine visited him....in character!!
Ironic, Michael Caine was originally to star in The Name of the Rose, before Connery was cast.
Never liked The Hunt for Red October, bored me!

Connery's "adventure trilogy" is essential viewing: The Man Who Would Be King, Robin and Marian, and The Wind and the Lion. His greatest performance is probably in The Offence.

It's definitely a turn of character for him. But he's better than Pine or Affleck in the role. The part was written for Harrison Ford.

I quite liked Affleck in the part. I find Krasinski to be too much of an action man, even though they work his involvement into the story pretty well.
