    3. TMWTGG: A gorgeous orchestral sound with, once again, great use of the title theme in different guises-- action theme, love theme, exotic location theme. Orchestral instruments with some exotic touches courtesy of zither and finger cymbals, and with a pleasantly reverb-heavy sound.
It's good to see the TMWTGG love. It's an unusual score for Barry in some ways (I remember reading somewhere that it was unfinished), but I like it a lot too. Very distinctive. I always hear bits of the main riff (borrowed from Lulu's title track) in the action scoring for OP & AVTAK for some reason too.

It's a terrific score, though I think its appeal is low key compared to the more usually praised soundtracks. There is great orchestral beauty but in some ways it's more subtle than in other scores; it demands a bit more from the listener. It took a while for me to get to enjoy the score as much as I do now. And the fact the album is missing so much music doesn't help matters, since many of the best cues (some quite brief) are missing.

    Three of my favorites:

I absolutely love all of these samples. As you noted, very orchestral and what I especially like about this score is how it so perfectly reflects the moment and the setting in nearly every instance, at least in my view. Wonderful work and one can only hope that we get an expanded score release of this, MR & TSWLM one day.

    005. DAF

In the early days of my Bond music fandom, DAF was number one for me but other scores have surpassed it since. Still great, though. I remember when I first got my hands on the expanded album, I knew exactly which cue I wanted to listen to. I selected it, listened to it, smiled and started following the beat with my hand.
You can't go wrong with the 007 theme. This and the version that plays in TB are my favourites. What I like the most about the DAF score is the sharp, almost glittery sound that permeates the entire effort. Just as how GF had a sort of metallic clang effect to reflect gold bars and TB had a sort of dreaminess which reflected water, Barry masterfully evoked diamonds with DAF (and even had a sort of howling wind effect in his Bond theme as the hovercraft departed Amsterdam).

    .

Terrific work by gkgyver in those recordings.

It’s much easier to appreciate the score for TMWTGG with his tracks to fill in the gaps in the official soundtrack.

    Terrific indeed.

His work also inspired a deeper musical interest in me --Bond or otherwise. It all begun back in 2010 at CBn when he posted his transcription of the Gondola Chase music.

    Moonraker

Passed the most important test of them all: John Barry. John Barry. John Barry ... and then nothing. Once we also rated the scores of DAF, TMWTGG, OP and AVTAK (on positions 8 through 11?), we may get down to the lower echelons. I suggest the next would be George Martin.

OHMSS (Barry's undisputed masterpiece, innovative in so many ways)
YOLT (probably the one I listen to the most, hauntingly beautiful)
Thunderball (best night time Bond soundtrack)
Goldfinger (the most iconic, but lacks the diversity of the top 3)
LALD (the best non Barry Bond soundtrack)
Moonraker (too short but otherwise full of excellence)
TMWTGG (very uneven but the good parts are really good)

Very close to my seven. I'd go with. .

    FRWL
    GF
    TB
    YOLT
    OHMSS
    DAF
    TSWLM

I do like Arnold's stuff too, but you can keep the FYEO, LTK, GE stuff. Newman's stuff is too modern generic for me to get excited about. NTTD just reminds me of the movie, so I don't enjoy that one much.

    Extended ranking (Feyador style):

    007 LALD
    006 MR
    005 AVTAK
    004 DAF
    003 TLD
    002 CR
    001 TND

other OO agents: FYEO; TSWLM; GF; NTTD; YOLT; GE

    (...)

Desk job: TB; TWINE; SF; SP; QoS
  • In no particular order:

    Diamonds Are Forever
    You Only Live Twice
    Live And Let Die
    Tomorrow Never Dies
    Casino Royale
    The Living Daylights
    Skyfall

Think in time No Time To Die could make it into this list, not sure what I would drop though.

Great list! 5 of our Top 7 are identical, but I have MR/AVTAK instead of YOLT/SF.
NTTD is a Top 10 candidate for me, too.

Nothing set in stone, but I'm very comfortable with this list. Seems I have been hardly impressed post-1985, save two of Arnold's later works.

    1. MR (Barry)
    2. AVTAK (Barry)
    3. OHMSS (Barry)
    4. GF (Barry)
    5. YOLT (Barry)
    6. LALD (Martin)
    7. TMWTGG (Barry)

    8. DAD (Arnold)
    9. CR (Arnold)
    10. DAF (Barry)

So many greats to choose from. Shooting from the hip, I’d go with:

    1. YOLT
    2. TLD
    3. OHMSS
    4. MR
    5. TMWTGG
    6. GE
    7. TND

Honorable mention goes to LTK. I think Kamen’s score is really underappreciated. That speedy little snippet of the Bond theme that plays as Bond sneaks around the water tanks in Krest’s warehouse pops in my head frequently.

The Bond theme that kicks in when Bond pops the wheelie on that big rig gives me goosebumps every time!!

I don't think my seven have changed since posting about this originally, but I can definitely confirm my love for the GoldenEye score after having just rewatched it. The brooding, ambient nature of it is so fitting. It's actually what mostly drew me to the movie initially along with Brosnan's performance and all the action scenes.
