IMO the one person who explained this best is, oddly enough, ALFRED.

Let me explain: around 2010, Batman in the comic book world had been killed (supposedly for real this time). Way more to it, but here's the short version) and Dick Grayson reluctantly had to take Bruce Wayne's place. Since Dick's personality was so different from Bruce's, he worried that the public would suspect that he wasn't the one true Batman. Alfred told him to think of Batman as a 'role'-- 'like Hamlet, or Willie Loman, or even James Bond. Play it to suit your strengths'

Leave it to Alfred to be absolutely brilliant 200% of the time. Like the man said, and the theory is absolute crap, with major proof as evidence of it.

It's cool to think about but I like to watch him as the same agent. Whatever makes you happy.

I'm sorry, I've been in that room, and I've found no Bond heads in the closet. Now, I did find Lee Harvey Oswald, Jimmy Hoffa, Bobby Kennedy and Robert McNamara all playing poker and drinking beer, and I sat down and played with them, winning with a straight flush.

IS Q the same character. I thought TWINE and DAD alluded that he was a new Q

@licensetoforum. Forgot about the new Q. Q like M are codenames.
    Thanks for correcting me

DEBUNKING THAT CODENAME THEORY (If this has come before, sorry)

A lot of people think this is a fan theory. I think maybe casual fans, but a lot of true fans prove this is false. Here's my take.

    Connect the Bond's

    Sean Connery to George Lazenby
The infamous This never happened to the other fellow line really annoys me because most people seem to think that is refers to 007 Connery when THAT ISN'T IT AT ALL! It's a fourth wall joke meant to introduce you to a new Bond. It's stupid, but that doesn't mean that it proves Lazenby is different to Connery. When he's clearing out his desk, we see Honey Ryder's knife (DN), Red Grant's watch (FRWL), the briefcase (also FRWL) and the breathing device (TB). This proves that Bond SC and Bond GL are the same. This is further justified when SC is so obsessed with finding Blofeld because he killed his wife. He's the same character in the same universe. I've heard people say that he's a different 007 because Blofeld doesn't recognize him. This is somewhat of an error on the filmmakers part given the fact that OHMSS came before YOLT in the book order and wanted to stay so true to OHMSS that they were gonna go straight with it. Anyway, onto Moore's Bond. He's easy to connect.

Sean Connery to George Lazenby to Roger Moore

The graveyard scene in FYEO and the scene in the bar with Anya Amasova in TSWLM proves that he is the same as Lazenby who is the same as Connery so they must be the same man. It also works on a chronological timeline because he is in his mid-30's in DN and his late-50's in AVTAK. It is when Timothy Dalton was cast (my favorite and most watched Bond) as 007 in TLD is when the chronological timeline theorists really get their knickers in a twist.

Sean Connery to George Lazenby to Roger Moore to Timothy Dalton

On a chronological timeline, you can't connect them. You can't go from being 60 to 30 again unless you have a DeLorian but Dalton resigns MI6 yet is continued to be known as James Bond. Once Jason Bourne arrests the Treadstone managers, he is knows as David Webb, his real name. There's also a He was married once line in LTK. Tracy wasn't mentioned but still obviously intended to be her. Tracy was married to George Lazenby who we've already worked out is connected to Sean and Tracy's grave was seen in a Roger Moore film.

Sean Connery to George Lazenby to Roger Moore to Timothy Dalton to Pierce Brosnan

Well, the 006 death takes place 9 years ago which, if GoldenEye was set in 1995, would place it in 1986, ahead of the Dalton films. Brosnan is also connected to Dalton because there is an agent called Caroline who makes sure he is in order because he went rogue in LTK which means he needed a proper evaluation before he was let back on board. That Q's lab scene in Die Another Day has Roger Moore's gadgets in there (the Crocodile Suit and the Acrostar Jet from Octopussy) .

Sean Connery to George Lazenby to Roger Moore to Timothy Dalton to Pierce Brosnan to Daniel Craig

Watch Skyfall and you see the
place where 007 grew up, the graves of his parents and Kincade calls him James Bond!

This may not prove that he is connected to the other bonds, but it does show that his
    family name is Bond

Not bad. Except the DB5 plate in GE is different to the one in GF. ;-)

Plus, the Daniel Craig Bond is a reboot, who may have had the same adventures between QoS and SF.

I hate people watching movies like James Bond and trying to find symbols and explanations everywhere. Watching Bond films shouldn't be like a university class - but a fun thrillride with friends, beers and chips/popcorn next to you !! That's why I always hate litterature classes - the teacher seems to find symbols and meaning in every page... I doubt even the author was aware of half the meanings these teachers pull out of thin air. Enjoy the damn books/movies, don't wear your brain over-analyzing then !!

I watched a documentary on Dr Suess the other day, and some commentators went on and on about the symbolism and waxed philosophically about How the Grinch Stole Christmas for fifteen minutes. Now Mr. Giesel certainly was heavy on themes and symbolism, but come on folks...

Skyfall puts this myth to rest...
Kincade calls him 'James Bond', and his parent's gravestone says 'Bond' on it...

Common sense puts it to rest. Anyone who believes it is a troll.

Yep indeed, the only time Bond is a codename was that 1967 Casino Royale film, where every characters was carrying James Bond 007 as a codename.

  • I don't like that theory at all. Totally BS.
  • OK. Theory debunked. Now time to move on to the theory that all the murders in Murder She Wrote are actually committed by the Angela Lansbury character.

And all murder in Midsommer are committed by Mr. (or Mrs) Barnaby.
  • I like to consider the Dalton/Brosnan films a reboot as well.

Bond is, Moneypenny is, but Desmond Llewellyn was taken over by John Cleese who became Q in DAD.

The codename theory was suggested by Lee Tamahori and it represents the biggest ever heap of dung ever talked about the world of James Bond 007.

I am trying to think of worse, but yeah, it truly is. Man, if Tamahori by some miracle got away with that (I don't know how EON would have let him), we would all be carving pitchforks in preparation to storm his house, bloodlust deep in our hearts.

Seriously, though. When they were all sitting around tweaking the script, did Tamahori just bump into P&W and this happened:

Tamahori: "Hey guys, I think the script is really good, but it is missing something."

P&W: "Thanks...what do you have in mind?"

Tamahori: "Well, you better sit down cause this will literally blow your mind. Alright?
Yeah, those chairs right there, yep, there you go. Ok. Ready? Picture this: You have secret Agent James Bond, 00 section, licence to kill, man of a thousand women and exquisite cars and drinks. But, what if it wasn't just one man with the title? What if, across the history of MI6's 00 section every single 007 agent was given the name James Bond after their predecessor died or retired? That would explain how James Bond has been relatively young over 40 years and not an 80 year old man on crutches. It's a great idea, I know. You really don't have to flatter me."

    P&W: "Lee, are you buggered?"

    Tamahori: "Only a little. Why?"

P&W: "That makes no bloody sense. Bond is Bond. ONE man, no others."

Tamahori: "But the Bond films don't have any continuity. There is nothing connecting them. That is why my theory is perfect, and probably the best idea ever had by anyone...ever."

P&W: "Oh yeah? Then how do you explain Bond visiting Tracy's grave later into the Moore era, connecting him to Lazenby's Bond in On Her Majesty's Secret Service?"

    Tamahori: "Uhhh....well I-"

P&W: "Or how about Lazenby's Bond looking at past memorabilia from the Connery era, proving they are one in the same?

Tamahori: "Well, I may have fast forwarded-

P&W: "Or in Licence to Kill, when Bond is tossed the bouquet by Della and Felix explains to her that he was 'married once', obviously meaning Tracy, connecting not only Dalton's era and Lazenby's era, but all of the eras leading up to the late 80s ?

Tamahori: "Were all those deleted scenes? Cause...I think I...ahhhh...missed them."

P&W: "Just get back to your director's chair, you flaming git!"

    MGW/Babs to Tamahori: *SLAP*

Tamahori flees to his trailer, in tears.

That's all it boils down to at the end of the day- the director hadn't educated himself. He would've benefited greatly from a simple Bond marathon.
