@w2bond Why shouldn't you like it as much as you do? I think right around #10 is where that picture tends to hover on many lists. Have some faith in your taste!

Anyways, I'm rearing to start another Bondathon myself. Girlfriend and I are finishing up Casino Royale ('06) this morning and it's given me that itch again. She's never seen it. Excited to reviist some. For many of them it's been a long time now.

@ThighsOfXenia Yes that's about the average rank. But it's got uninteresting villains. Decent action but surpassed by other films. Plot is not too engaging. Non-Barry score rollercoaster ride in quality. Don't like the PTS and I'm indifferent to the theme song. So on paper, it shouldn't rank this high.

Unfortunately I can't remember the order I saw the films in but FYEO may have been one of the earlier Moore films I saw so there may be a subconscious nostalgia bias.

More likely, the 80's is the best decade for action (except AVTAK) thanks to John Glen. Bond and Melina's relationship is one of the more engaging in the series. Columbo is perhaps the 2nd best ally (after Kerim Bey). And I love the immersion in the locations, which is surprisingly rare.

On a related note, the two films I like but can't rank highly are AVTAK and TB, and the one I make no apologies for loving is Octopussy.

Cheers! TLD was the first Bond film I saw at the cinema (showing my age there!), and I remember thinking that Timothy Dalton was Fleming's Bond made flesh. Although it's still a hair's breadth between him and Connery for my favourite 007.....

My first Bond film at the cinema was LALD so i'm really showing my age!

I thought exactly the same when i saw TLD for the first time. Dalton really made Fleming's Bond a flesh and blood character. The whole film was a breath of fresh air and a sorely needed jab in the arm for the series at the time.

@w2bond Fair enough. I used to dismiss FYEO as overrated, primarily for the reasons you listed. Had the wonderful opportunity of catching it in the cinema (for unfortunate reasons: the passing of Roger Moore prompted some of the cineplexes to throw some of his Bond films up) and it really opened my eyes up.

The climax is superb, the level of tension that Glen wrings out of a series that was becoming increasingly reliant on action as opposed to suspense is something to really applaud. The supporting cast is by and large fantastic, Moore's performance is tremendous (but really, when isn't it). I also dig Conti's score.

Nevertheless, glad to see we both really like it. I don't think it cracks my top 10, but it's somewhere around there. Early teens, or so.

My top 5 is pretty fixed, as is the bottom 5....some wriggle room in the middle ranks, depending on my mood, though 😂
For a long time TLD and LTK were my numbers 1 and 2, with TLD holding firm due to its more classic 'Bondian' feel. I'm gutted Dalton didn't get to do more, but hey, two films are better than none at all.
And, as a side note.... I was so desperate to be like Dalton-Bond that I blew all my pocket money on a black leather jacket (as sported in the Ice Chase sequence) 😂😂

@ThighsOfXenia. While I wouldn't call Glen a master of suspension he pulls it off very well in FYEO during the rock climb, and end of Octopussy.

I'm assuming you are a fan of Goldeneye as well. I'm personally glad it's liked by most people but not without valid criticism from some.

@w2bond Are you talking about Goldeneye's score? If so, yes. There are a couple tracks I dislike but overall I like the flavor it gives the film. Very industrial, post-Cold War vibes from it, which the cinematography and production design also work to achieve. Very evocative.

@ThighsOfXenia I mean the film overall - given your username. It's easily in my top 7 but the score is the big downside so it moves around in the top 7 rather than being even higher

Not even halfway through my newest Bondathon, and it's looking like my list will have one of its biggest shakeups in a long time. I wonder if it's simply from watching the films for the first time since reading the novels.

Very cool list. Seven of your bottom ten, are part of my top ten-- so you and me are on opposite poles. But I smiled when I looked at your ranking. It's quite clear you like what you like. Great list @Daniel316 ... I can't wait to hear more of your thoughts on the films and James Bond himself. Have you ever read any of the novels? How'd you become a fan?

I happen to own the Casino Royale Novel but I have not finished it yet (it has been boring so far to me) though I did read the GoldenEye novelization by John Gardner. I plan to post my reviews of all the bond films from my most recent marathon (finished it about a month or so back) one a day more than likely (I posted my skyfall review not to long ago). as for how I got into Bond well idk I kinda have just been a bond fan since I can remember

I am a younger fan yes, I didnt exactly start in the Brosnan era when it was happening but I grew up watching Brosnan. Craig was bond by the time I started to have memories but I always remembered Brosnan as the one who is James Bond in my mind

@Daniel316 Looking forward to your full reviews. The list almost looks random, although you seem to prefer the less serious entries. I will check my data later but you probably have the highest ranking of DAD I've ever seen. I need to check if anyone has it at number one.

@w2bond yeah I do tend to prefer more light hearted Bond films but I do love serious entries (LTK, FRWL, GE, etc). The ideal Bond film to me is the perfect balance between light hearted and serious which imo is what GE is.

In that case, look no further than Octopussy. Which is strangely low on your list @Daniel316

well Octopussy is the one exception. I do like it but not nearly as much as the rest of the Moore films due to some issues I have with it (that I will go into more when I revise my review on it)
