If you don't think I am telling it like it was, go back and read the SP threads. I was insanely and ridiculously attacked and castigated for not liking it. I was accused of every type of malfeasance, but when yo go back and look, my criticisms were pretty well and calmly explained. I never got personal, but it sure got that way in reverse. I will say that several members, even some of SP's champions (at least they were at the time) came to my defense.

I was on at the time but I remember the disputes only vaguely. But I do remember how the SP reviews got steadily negative over time, after the kind of mixed reviews at release.

Shame about the personal attacks though.

Hahahaha, ay good for you man, you got it right.

I loved SP when it came out like some but it has only fallen in the ranks since then.

I just went and looked, everyone had it in their Top Ten, but me, on those early pages. Including @Creasy47 and @bondjames , who now put it near or at the bottom. There was some mass hysteria going on. Start on the first page below, it's hilarious when compared to how that movie is talked about now. Several were ready to put at number one then and there. I started at 20 or 21, but after I went back for my second viewing it dropped to 24 and it has been cemented there since.

OMG that is hilarious, everyone loves it so much it’s insane. I mean I guess apart from you.

haha, I had it at 15!

In all seriousness, I found the numerous first places that were awarded to SP pretty funny in light of how it's viewed now.

Yeah, everyone’s like “ oh this is the best craig film oh top 5 of the whole series oh better than skyfall” that’s like 90% of people and now it’s the other way around

The hysteria was greater than I imagined. I'll be interested to see if it's like that for B25.

Not exactly my finest hour. It's unfortunate to be reminded of this. In fairness, I did note it as 'provisional rank' of 10 in my first ranking attempt post-release. Perhaps that was to avoid the kind of backlash you received, I can't remember.

I definitely recall you getting royally chewed out for your ranking and comments in those early days, and the attacks were unduly harsh. I received similar backlash from a few specific members for just being critical even though I had it ranked mid pack for some time. They pretty much tore me a new one on the box office thread. It's not easy being critical of the latest Bond entry.
    ----

Regarding the SF comparisons - as I've mentioned before, folks did dissect SF quite relentlessly here for years prior to SP's release. All kinds of facets of the film were discussed in depth. I really enjoyed the film, and so didn't really take much notice of all the dissent, but it certainly was there in 2013/2014. I wasn't involved in 2012 so am not sure what people thought upon release.

I will say that SP has been a very contentious film for this fan community. Shame, and I hope EON don't give us something that polarizing again for some time.

No, I know and you're correct. It was pretty euphoric around here. Twilight zone sort of stuff. A few members were positively giddy, and I couldn't understand it. One chap saw it 16 times or something in the theatre (can't remember who now).

@Birdleson - One thing's impressive: the fact that you've kept SP at the same rank all these years!

@Birdleson - Probably not when it's 24, and I imagine by some distance. But even then some people's 24's change.

Speaking of OHMSS' purported failure, it's worth noting that it lasted decades. Much longer than the time we've had for Quantum, and I think the gripes most can list for Quantum are a lot more specific than the ones given for OHMSS in '69. OHMSS is likely in a special place given its placement in history and the fact that it was the first post-Connery Bond, so naturally it would've been up for some heavy scrutiny. Lazenby leaving immediately certainly didn't help.
Yeah, the difference between the slow road to "redemption" for OHMSS and fast track for QUANTUM OF SOLACE is simply how available the film was for viewing. On the other hand, the internet explodes reactions leading up to and following the release of a Bond film. The forum I experienced film releases on literally became impossible about 3 days prior and a week after the actual release date. Outright trollery and true bedlam, it was a cycle perpetrated by professional Bond trolls and general trolls alike. But that's different from the good folk we're talking about here and genuine issues with the content. (And I don't know what happens on MI6 during the release proper of the latest Bond film, I don't have that experience.)

I like SPECTRE and I'm pretty comfortable with dislike for it, especially if it's civil. So I'm predisposed to think its reputation will only improve over time in context and familiarity and alongside other missions. If not, that's okay, too. I'll always have it.

Really enjoyed SP when it came out. Found it superior to SF and just a little better than QOS. Had it at 12 or 14 in my ranking.
Now I despise it for the retcon that tarnishes the whole Craig era, Madeleine, Denbigh and the whole Nine Eyes plot, the boring score, the yellow filter, the unexciting action, and an atrocious third act.
They should've left SPECTRE in the 60s. Just my opinion.

For me it's been the same since day 1 (SP, that is); I find it to be a bore from beginning to end, and I don't like Craig in it.

    You are remarkably consistent.

Coming after SF, which i came away from disappointed ( and it hasnt changed much since!) I got far more enjoyment from SP and still do! No where as good as CR and QoS has become better and better on multiple viewings, i still enjoy large sections of SP, its the final section it goes off the rails for me.
Glad to see though the majority of lists here still have DAD at bottom. For me there will never be any Bond film that takes its place as worst ever!

I think I had it anywhere from 6-8 upon that initial viewing, but the honeymoon phase and new-movie-feel wore off quick. The Mendes films are the only two that simply do nothing for me to any degree, whereas I'm eager and happy to rewatch all the others at any time.

Not a bad list, except for the 5th spot for GE. I still can t understand how this film is so revered, poor as it is in every way.

There were a few things I was not aware of re: the film Nolan was influenced by and also Craig and Mendes favourite Bond film. Two of the top 3 are in my top 3.

Interesting. I stopped reading the comments after DAD and DAF and AVTAK though. Filled with prejudice and snarky comments. Surely not done by a Bond fan.

Given the huge monetary success of DAD and DAF they don't speak for the general public either I would say.

Agree the lower ranked Bond films they were taking shots at them, I think rankings like this one were probably selected by office staff lol

I was thinking of giving my Bond ranking again, but this time on a scale from 1.0 to 10.0 or 1 to 100 if you will.

1.0 being the Bond film I place lowest and 10.0 being the Bond film I place highest.

What this shows is not a classic rating like to be found on ImdB for instance but it shows the distance from one film to the other over a scale of 100 notches.

I doubt the person who made the final choice on this ranking ever watched any of those films all the way thru. They probably just saw bits and pieces of AVTAK , DAF, etc played during a Bond Marathon on Thanksgiving.
Just to spite them- here's my newest ranking:

    1. GOLDFINGER
    2. FROM RUSSIA WITH LOVE
    3. ON HER MAJESTY'S SECRET SERVICE
    4. DR NO
    5. THE SPY WHO LOVED ME
    6. THUNDERBALL
    7. OCTOPUSSY/NEVER SAY NEVER AGAIN
    8. LICENCE TO KILL
    9. THE LIVING DAYLIGHTS
    10. CASINO ROYALE 06
    11. LIVE AND LET DIE
    12. SKYFALL
    13. A VIEW TO A KILL
    14. DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER
    15. YOU ONLY LIVE TWICE
    16. FOR YOUR EYES ONLY
    17. GOLDENEYE
    18. THE MAN WITH THE GOLDEN GUN
    19. MOONRAKER
    20. SPECTRE
