It seems that most of the non-US members here know Carl Reiner mostly for Dead Men Don't Wear Plaid. So do I, mostly since DMDWP was probably the first movie I ever found that was NOT dubbed for being shown in German cinemas, but only subtitled initially, and I only discovered his previous TV and movie history (which never really made it here) tonight. Anyway, DMDWP would be enough to make him eternal. Thank you, Carl Reiner.

This week I heard Carl Reiner mentioned as 98 years old associated with his one-time partner Mel Brooks' 94th birthday.

    Two comedy greats.

I was wondering why “beef Stroganoff” was trending on twitter today. It seems that is was due to this lovely Carl Reiner story – told by writer Matthew Rosenberg.

    A final one from me:

For those of you in the US, TCM is scheduled to broadcast a series of his movies on July 28th. The tribute starts at 8:00pm EST, and includes “Enter Laughing” (1967), “All of Me” (1984) and “The Comic” (1969).

Here in the tri-state region (US), MEtv shows the “Dick Van Dyke Show” on Sunday evenings, and last year Mr. Reiner listed ten of his favorite episodes.

That is really sad news. But what an incredible legacy he has left.

Music that will be listened to and loved forever.

    A true legend.

I first became hooked to Morricone's music when first seeing Once Upon a Time in the West in 1968 or 1969. He was probably the first film composer that I recognised by name (e.g. I had seen Born Free as a primary school pupil but did not learn the name "John Barry" until much later). I was at his concert of his more or less "greatest hits", with full symphony orchestrra and choir, at what was then the O2 World (and now Mercedes-Benz Arena) in Berlin. It was fantastic, and I believe he had to quit touring soon after for health reasons. That man was a complete musical genius although (especially in his older movies) he can often be found to quote his own earlier works. But the same must be said of the likes of John Barry and John Williams.

My probably favourite scene (and opening credits) from one of my all-time favourite movies wouldn't be imaginable, and certainly not as great, without his music:

As basically applies for hundreds of other famous scenes in film history that he scored.

Oh! This is really sad....One of my favourite Composers. The man who made western films sound like westerns.

R.I.P. Ennio Morricone, when I was very young I had The Good the Bad and the Ugly score on cassette and played it almost every night before sleep. The whole score captured my imagination though I especially loved this piece of music...

    The Desert - Ennio Morricone

Ennio arguably composed the greatest score in the history of film Once Upon A Time in The West

The Maestro had something for everyone.

He could be emotional and funny at the same time...

    Or epic...

    Or badass...

Or even terrifying... (NOTE: Many people credits The Thing's music as being from John Carpenter himself)...

    And kind of weird...

But he could also be your boogie man...

Indeed, he deserved being called a Total Musician.

    Great examples, @bigladiesman.

Regarding The Thing, Ennio Morricone reportedly gave director John Carpenter a choice from various approaches. And Carpenter chose the one closest to his own style. On its own and for the film, I absolutely love that score.

    The Untouchables theme "weird"?
    Love that music!
One of the best times I had in the cinema seeing that film, really partisan audience lapping it up, and Morricones music really major part of it!
(Admittedly a recent viewing showed it hasnt aged well!!)
