    Have two more clues...

    1. I'm clearly not a Lannister.

    2. I am the victim of a pot-de-vin.

    3. It's not as if I couldn't afford it, I just chickened out of paying.

    4. The city where this conversation takes place would not be to my taste.

    5. I made a misteak.

    6. The person who gloats over my misfortune will very soon be the subject of someone else's gloating.

    7. I was troubled by a terrible disease for over a year.

    8. My losses are bloody rare, but I should have said "Well done" and left it at that.

    Incorrect:

    M. Aubergine
    Benz
    Consumptive Italian (MR)
    Ed Killifer
    Hai Fat
    General Medrano
    Mr. Solo
    Taiwanese Tycoon (AVTAK)
    Victor Tourjansky (the drunk Italian)

This sounds right. Even the “misteak“ makes sense now.

@pachazo rises to the challenge once more!

Elliot Carver: "Anyway, there's absolutely no truth in this malicious rumour that I started running mad cow disease stories simply because Sir Angus Black, the great British beef baron, lost £10,000 to me in a game of poker and refused to pay up. Moreover, there's even less truth in the rumour I took a hundred million francs from the French to keep the stories running for another year."

    Explanations thus:

    1. I'm clearly not a Lannister.

He doesn't always pay his debts.

    2. I am the victim of a pot-de-vin.

Un pot-de-vin is a bribe, as in what the French gave Carver to keep the stories running.

    3. It's not as if I couldn't afford it, I just chickened out of paying.

He's obviously wealthy... and the first of the meaty references in the clues.

    4. The city where this conversation takes place would not be to my taste.

It's full of Hamburgers (as opposed to Beefburgers). Sorry not sorry.

    5. I made a misteak.

Not paying up... and of course my 'misteak' was deliberate.

    6. The person who gloats over my misfortune will very soon be the subject of someone else's gloating.

Moments later Carver's broadcast is interrupted and a rival TV news anchor gloats over it.

    7. I was troubled by a terrible disease for over a year.

BSE and the French-financed news stories about it.

    8. My losses are bloody rare, but I should have said "Well done" and left it at that.

Bloody/rare/well done... you get the idea!

I'm glad it was solved before I had to attempt to fit chateaubriand into a clue ;)

Great character and clues! This one was really bugging me. It sounded so familiar but I just couldn't make anything fit. And then that particular scene just popped in my head and I could hear the phrase "mad cow disease" and I knew I had it.

Give me a little time to come up with something for the next round.

For those who aren't aware, the tale of Sir Angus Black was shortened in the editing room. The full scene can be found, with an introduction by the late director Roger Spottiswoode, around the 5:20 mark here:

Spottiswoode is still alive, you may be confusing him with Michael Apted.

Let's get it Eon (sorry about the pun) with another round!

    1) Dulation.
    2) Peacocking isn't appropriate when there's so much work to do.
    3) You see me before you can see him.
    4) Can you type Mark Twain and Hannibal Lecter?
    5) But it has to be original!
    6) M, who is here, also has one.
    7) Bond, who is here as well, likes M's better.
    8) The star of the south.
    9) The purpose of this meeting can be found in the title of the film.
    10) Bond's instincts were wrong (for once!) in this particular instance.

    11) I emerge from behind a pair of double doors as the chandelier dazzles above me.
    12) Repetition might be the key to my irritation.
    13) Jerez.
    14) Brief and to the point. I don't overstay my welcome.

Nothing yet. A little friendly advice : don't spend too much time on clue #4 (or #2 even) if you can't make a connection. Let's try some more.
