#4 is killing me as I just feel it limits things so much (which ought to make it easier!)
    Moving on,

    I'll go with: MayDay?

Neither of those. I'm running out of clues but I will provide a summary and a few small pointers within the next 48 hours or so. Keep thinking until then - there's plenty of kudos on offer to the person who cracks this.

It's not MayDay. Well technically it is tomorrow, but it's not the character you're looking for.

Oh and try not to read things so literally...

It could be the snooper-robot from A View to a Kill

Neither of the above. The robot snooper would be hilarious but I think people might protest :-)

Well this is obviously harder than I anticipated, but I'm also fairly surprised that nobody has cracked it yet. Here's a summary of what you have so far and some pointers...

You are looking for a character who provided something towards a very famous Bond film scene. This person's name has, in some form or other, recently been released in a way that you are all aware of.

References to "nice ham", footwear, a man who can't speak but can see and the "agreement to marry my squeeze" cryptically relate to specific lines of dialogue surrounding this character.

Thinking about the difference between the original Connery quote in clue #1 and what it has been modified to will lead you to the name you are looking for, as will researching the non-children works of Roald Dahl.

Rather unlike the character in question, one of you should now have a good chance of being able to put the pieces together.

    ---

    1. Our asylums are full of people who think they're a spy like me.

    2. I provided some nice ham.

    3. My name has recently been released.

    4. I had an agreement to marry my squeeze. Til death do us part?

    5. I made a decision that befits my name, like Roald Dahl when he wasn't writing for children.

    6. Without my assistance there would never have been a famous scene in Bond history... even though I wasn't in it.

    7. I won't be needing that new footwear after all.

    8. To answer my question: "He can't speak, but he can see where he's going."

    9. I must be some kind of big guy, but not for long.

Not really fitting many clues, I'm afraid, but here is another guess:

    Whitaker?
