The Return of Blofeld

For twenty films James Bond was a fully formed character with no beginning, and no end; just an un-aging figure who existed as he was; unchanged from one decade to the next, (for the most part). Like Batman Begins however, Casino Royale brought a fresh new interpretation of a beloved character to the silver screen. CR and QoS let us see Bond go through an internal struggle which helped his character develop into the one we all know and love from the old films, and starting with Skyfall we will get to see other characters be re-born and enter this new world of Bond, vis-à-vis Q and perhaps Moneypenny and M as well. However, while this new direction for Bond is great, there is a key ingredient that is missing from the equation.

Just like Casino Royal, in Batman begins it was fun to see the origins of the character, and watch him get his start. However, after we had a fully formed Batman, the next logical step was to present the thing which would truly complete him by representing his absolute antithesis: the Joker. This worked stupendously in The Dark Knight, and I feel that it is only a matter of time before the same thing happens with the Bond films as they move to introduce his quintessential rival: Blofeld.

What I would like to discuss here is people’s feelings on the Blofeld character going forward in the Bond franchise. Whether you think he has a place in it or whether you’d rather not see him at all. How do you think he should be introduced to the series? Who should play him? Can the character still be realistic today, or will it be too hard to believe he is real? How could he change to be more believable? I certainly have a lot of opinions on this subject and look forward to sharing them in a discussion about this polarizing figure, but first I want to see what others have to say about re-introducing Ernst Stavro Blofeld to the Bond franchise.
