Not a fan of brosnan though rate GE despite a low key soundtrack. the other 3 films were weak story's and did not have the best directors.

If it wasn't for Roger Moore looking so old in AVTAK, I would start Dalton's tenure when it did. AVTAK really isn't that bad, save for Moore's age, among other things. But since Moore didn't look like a convincing Bond in AVTAK, and it really did make some parts unwatchable actually, I would say have Dalton start in 1985 with AVTAK, and maybe continue into the 90's.

It does if you have an iota of intelligence.

Accusing people of having a lack of interest because they disagree with you makes you look really intelligent.

Lets disagree on this subject with you.

Brosnan was a fine Bond- it was his movies that were most of the problem. But that gives me a new idea: we all know that part of the reason behind Dalton's lukewarm debut in TLD was because many people were expecting Brosnan. (the other big reason was that Dalton was so radically different than Moore)
But you know what-- If Dalton had taken the role in FYEO, it would have been before Remington Steele, and not a damn soul would have known who Brosnan was!!
Now yes I know that Brosnan first met Cubby on the set of FYEO because of his late wife playing the Countess, but Remington Steele played a HUGE part in Brosnan eventually getting the role. Remington Steele was practically an AUDITION! :-))

This is a great point. I would've liked to have moore start with DAF (it was more suited to him anyway and connery just embarassed himself), then retire after moonraker. Then bring in dalton for FYEO, and have him carry on until after goldeneye, then we get brosnan. Also, brosnan gets another film after DAD that still has gadgets and isn't CR, but is more down to earth. He deserved a better final film.

    That's just your opinion.

As much as I enjoy Brosnan I can't deny that Dalton, Craig, Connery and even Moore are probably stronger actors. Pierce has had his moments though.

Better actor doesn't always mean best performance... Craig is a great actor, but his CR and QOS performances are rubbish... Brosnan may not be a great actor, but his DAD performance is one of the best in the franchise...

I respect the fact that you enjoy the more campy and comical Bonds more @DaltonCraig but I think the vast majority of critics and fans alike would disagree with that statement. Craig recieved tremendous praise for both performances. Even critics that didn't like QOS said that Craig's awesome performance is one of the film's saving graces. I didn't hear nearly as much in that regard for Brosnan in DAD. To me GE was his worst performance. He got alittle better in TND but didn't improve in eyes again after that.

I liked Brozza's performance in DAD. OK some of the dialogue he couldn't save (few could) but he seemed confident and far more at ease in the role. Btw, you said Brozza once said "he was getting the hang of it" after DAD. That was actually in an interview promoting TWINE ;)

That might have been a different interview but Im certain with the one I saw the topic of discussion was EON letting him go and how he felt about it. In which he said he was sorry because he was "just getting the hang of it". I would hope that after 4 films he would be more than only just getting the hang of it.

Can we please get off the pro vs anti Brosnan platform and return to the thread's topic?
  • If I think about it now and no doubt have previously, maybe 1995 was the right timeline for Brosnan to make his debut, I mean he was plausible enough as Bond in Goldeneye and also for the two subsequent releases thereafter but I always retain doubts about Die Another Day. I think if say he had taken over from Moore in 1985 it possibly could of been too soon for the Irishman and I'm pleased in hindsight that Dalton got the part and made his debut when he did, Brosnan would get his turn at a later date and made at least two fine films out of it, all told it's best to say he was a little too premature for 1980s Bond and a little too past it for 21st Century 007, whether anyone wants to agree or disagree his departure or what was to be his last appearance in 2002 came a little too overstayed but at the right time, there was no way he could of been appropriate for Casino Royale, people must be aware of this

I wasn't calling you a liar. But thanks for showing me this. Im certain I saw another interview. Brosnan looked older, the interview stage was different, and Brosnan said "I was just getting the hang of it" in past tense as opposed to present. Either way its a moot point to me as I thought he came off best in TND before either interview took place. ;)

You're right @DarthDimi. I would've been fine with it but I really enjoyed Roger Moore's darker and more serious take on Bond. I'd hate to have been deprived of that. Like I said Dalton debuting 2 years earlier with AVTAK would have been ideal. Speaking of which could someone post those awesome Dalton AVTAK fan posters? :D

Haha Pierce said DAD was 'more real, intense'. Oh. My. Lawd. Brainwashed.

Tamahori must have been VERY convincing.

Anyways, Yes, I've long believed Dalton should have done a little into Moore and ALOT into Brosnan.

I can see Dalton play Bond in OHMSS, FRWL, TB or CR and QOS, but i don't think Dalton can work well in FYEO. THis is strange, although Moore is not my favorite, but i like FYEO very much (in my top five). I think its the best Moore performance. Dalton can't handle the relax atmosphere like Moore did, FYEO would be a different experience if Dalton play it. We may be would see Dalton avenge Luigi Ferrara death more brutally, by burn Loqcue alive with his car. The film would be still fun if Dalton in it, because we might see also more funny scenes like Dalton skiing on the sea with a cello. So for my money FYEO is FOR ROGER MOORE ONLY. no one else can play better than him.
  • Nevermind I found them. I just wish they didn't all have to have Dalton in the same pose. I liked the Dalton FYEO posters better.

I'm very fond of Moore so I'm going to say no ;). If we had Dalton in FYEO we wouldn't have had OP so I'm happy with things as they are.
  • Another thing that I think would have worked well if Dalton had done FYEO was that he really liked Fleming's Bond and sought to show how protective he was towards women and how he really "had a moment of weakness and fell for them" when one was hurt or in trouble. Which would have made Bond's helping Melina nd rejection of Bibi much more believable IMHO.

It's a definite no from me, this isn't just my Moore bias talking, I genuinley belive that FYEO benefits from Moore's presence, I think his age works for the film and he gives one of the series best performances in this film.

Rog was right to stay on for Octopussy, he carries the whole film, he is of course getting on but the film just works. I wouldn't be against someone else taking over for AVTAK and it may have improved the film, and yes Dalton probably could have fitted in niceley to that one, but once again I have to assume that a suitable replacement wasn't available, I'm sure if they really wanted to replace Rog, they would have!

Im not sure if it was even a matter of a suitable replacement. The Living Daylights was offered to Moore and the first few drafts were even written with him in mind. So who knows how long they would've used him. Personally I think Moore in TLD would've been a huge mistake. He would've been just under 60 and the series needed a change. By AVTAK things were already feeling tired. By TLD it'd would've just been too much. Retiring with Octopussy would've been ideal. 10 years and 6 films is perfect.

Is it actually true that EON were considering using Moore for TLD? As much as I love the guy, I find it pretty shocking that they would have kept him on for TLD!

I was too young to remember-- but I'm under the impression that they were pretty much asking Rog back on a movie-to-movie basis after TSWLM or maybe MR, but at the same time they were auditioning new guys because they knew they couldn't keep him forever. Publicly available auditions for James Brolin in OP and Sam Neil in TLD back my theory up. This is why I think they did have the script for TLD with Moore in mind, but he finally stepped down before filming started.

LOL I read that when Roger met Tanya Robert's mom and discovered that even she was younger than him, that was the last straw!
  • maybe not FYEO n OP as moore is good in both, but I would've loved for dalton to debut in AVTAK. If dalton was onboard they would've HAD TO make changes to better suit him, meaning we would've got a better film
  • A new pic I found from around FYEO time.
Does anyone else think he looks like Henry Cavill??

  • Awesome thread, I would have loved to see Dalton start in FYEO. Cannot picture him in ''Octopussy'' though....

Damn right! When I saw the PTS of FYEO in the helicopter, I imagined Dalton.

I very much liked Roger Moore in his films for what they were but he was in his 50's by the time FYEO came out. Connery was too old for NSNA and he was younger than Moore.

Bond has action sequences and you need the actor to be athletic enough to be believable.

Bond has to be young but not too young. In his mid thirties for starting in the role.

  • I think Moore should have quitted only AFTER For your eyes only. He did a brilliant job in those two movies. I am no big fan of Dalton. He did a good job in The living Daylights, but Licence to kill was the worst Bond movie so far (maybe more due to the fact that it was too violent than because of Dalton himself). But Moore should not have played in the last two films. I love his first five films, but I am not a big fan of the last two. And he was too old here. In fact he was too old already in FYEO, but I still think he did a brilliant job there.

I agree that for it's time LTK was violent but if you read Fleming, the violence in the film is milder. But in today's world of cinema, LTK's violence is less shocking but still powerful in the story. And LTK's suggested violence is also disturbing like the valentine gift in the PTS.

But I like Dalton's nasty turn as Bond. Bond is not a nice guy but a vicious animal in LTK in some scenes.

But Bond is a violent character inhabiting a violent world. And the Bond of LTK still belongs in the reality of our times. And LTK holds a special place for me as it is the last film made by Cubby as well as the last gun barrel of Maurice Binder and titles.

As for worst movie, DAD wins that honour. It is a Bond movie for fans of the XXX franchise. It over uses action and tries to do more than it can balance. Bond is a passenger in the story and not the driver as he should be. The initial depth of the movie is thrown out for cheap jokes that are hardly funny or are witty.

And the invisible car was not the worst thing either.

It's true about Brosnan's good luck in taking parts of both happily in "Remington Steele" then "James Bond 007", thanks to his late wife and Cubby. Tim Dalton would have suited very well in "For Your Eyes Only" even though he probably would have been so different younger than how we know him since as 007 in 1987. Plus Sir Roger Moore who had the worst films qualilty (it wasn't deep, just playboy style), despite being so fun and still respecting Fleming, had made his best perf as Bond, alongside his "The Spy Who Loved Me" one... So it's too hard to choose. Why can't some production remake it with an older Dalton-Bond ??? :D Or not...
  • FYEO to me was Sir Roger's finest turn as Bond and he still had more to give. Of course Dalton would have ate up that script, and been more age appropriate for the women cast opposite him, but I would have much preferred Dalton to start with AVTAK and carried on into the 90's with at least one and even better two films.
  • Dalton in For Your Eyes Only would have been phenomenal!

I'm a big fan of Dalton but I also agree that he was probably hurting the box office. So from a franchise point of view I'd say no to him being in FYEO...however on a purely personal level - I would have loved to have seen him take over as Bond at FYEO. I can give or take the two Moore bond films after it and i agree with the idea of Moore doing DAF. Suits his style.
