Maybe I missed it, but in live and let die M never seems to say what bond’s mission is. Is it tacitly assumed that the task is to kill Mr big?

    Well he says three agents have been killed and it’s Bond’s job to find out if they’re connected, I guess there’s a bit of mission there, but I agree it’s pretty vague! :D

    If we're talking about the movie (not the novel), then there is this dialogue:

    Bond: "I take it these killings are connected."
    M: "That's precisely what you're going to find out."

    Plus Moneypenny gives Bond a dossier with all relevant info inside.
