What Color Do You Most Associate Each Bond Film With?

in Bond Movies Posts: 12,710
Hello everyone! I thought of a new thread idea to see what color each member here associates each Bond film with. For me, many of the movies have a clear-cut main color I think of when I think of the movie, but some others I'm a bit more unsure of. My own list:

Dr. No: Seafoam Green, or some similar light green shade
From Russia with Love: Classic Red, perhaps slightly darker shades too
Goldfinger: Gold, or a similar shade of yellow
Thunderball: Royal Blue, or a rich blue that isn't too dark or light and really makes your eyes pop
You Only Live Twice: Sky Blue, or some other kind of light, somewhat pale blue
On Her Majesty's Secret Service: Royal Purple, or a rich purple that might lean a little darker than lighter
Diamonds Are Forever: Silver
Live and Let Die: Red-Orange, or a similar shade that resembles fire
The Man with the Golden Gun: Gold again like Goldfinger, or a brighter yellow works too
The Spy Who Loved Me: Royal Blue like Thunderball, or something maybe just a tad lighter
Moonraker: Classic Green, nothing too light or dark
For Your Eyes Only: Classic Orange, or perhaps something just a little lighter and paler
Octopussy: Very Light Purple
A View to a Kill: Ice Blue
The Living Daylights: Dijon Yellow
Licence to Kill: Dark, Grayish Blue
GoldenEye: Gold yet again, or a darker yellow, though red could also work
Tomorrow Never Dies: Chrome Gray
The World Is Not Enough: Cream
Die Another Day: Cerulean Blue, or some other kind of light-ish blue
Casino Royale: Silver
Quantum of Solace: Tan, or a very light brown of some other kind
Skyfall: A light blue shade of some sort
Spectre: Tuscany Yellow
No Time to Die: Teal

How about the rest of you? I'm curious to see similarities and differences out there!

Great idea for a thread @FoxRox, I think about this often. For me, a lot of it comes down to what colours the VHS covers were back in 1996 when discovering the films, as well as promotional colour schemes and items seen in the films.

DN: Banana yellow, because of the poster and Bond's baggage tag - but also red + white. There's a lot of red + white here, like the Le Cercle sign, practice golf balls, Craven A cigarettes, Red Stripe bottles, zodiac playing cards.
FRWL: Red because of communist Russia and the title logo. Also the attaché case inner lining, Istanbul brochure and the rifle's infra-red lens.
GF: Um, ah, ooh...copper and brass?!
    84975-83fc41eccda751ba2a84409300a28d13.jpg

TB: Blue, but not just the dark and deep title sequence blue, but all sorts of blues, like the 1996 VHS cover, Voit scuba items, Fiona's baby blue Mustang, re-used Fontainebleau props, Domino's Gauloises cigarettes.
YOLT: Not sure on this one. Maybe white.
OHMSS: Definitely purple as it's royal or regal, the casino interiors, 1996 VHS cover, Penguin centenary novel.
DAF: Not sure, maybe a pink-purple because of the VHS cover and I think the film is graded with a bit of pink or purple.
LALD: Sky blue + a slightly dark red. Lots of blue here, from studio letterhead to train cabin signage, and plenty of red from Fillet of Soul interior to henchman polo shirt.
TMWTGG: Somewhere between gold, brown and cream.
TSWLM: Black with white or yellow highlights, thanks to the henchmen's outfits, Stromberg vehicles and ski pole gun.
MR: Maybe a greyish-blue, thanks to the VHS cover. Or mustard.
FYEO: White on red, because of the Univex helicopter, car alarm sticker, ATAC timer and disassembly instruction card.
OP: Oranges and browns. Earthy colours.
NSNA: Maybe a sea green or blue.
AVTAK: Not sure, fair bit of green here though.
TLD: Blue + black, like the poster, plus a lot of the tech was black.
LTK: Leaf green, like the VHS cover. Bond also got amongst the greenery a bit, such as in the PTS, Hemingway house, promo pics with the two ladies either side in swimwear.
GE: Gold + black. Also rich computer screen blue - just look how blue the Earth is when showing the satellite in orbit.
TND: Red + black, thanks to the title logo and promo gear. When I think of TND I picture the P99 on a red background. A lot of the equipment here is black, and we have a red encoder and red lighting when Bond makes the grenade jar.
TWINE: Blue + orange thanks to the promos, but also grey. 70% grey to be precise.
    DAD: Iceberg blue.
CR: Casino felt green + red. A bit of aqua or turquoise in there too when Bond arrives in Nassau and walks up the steps to the One&Only club later that night.
    QOS: Sienna colours and black.
SF: Grey, because of the grey suit Bond wears at MI6, the grey stubble, and Scotland looking rather drab. Also because of items not seen on-screen, like M's security pass, Macau hotel room ephemera and the cardboard packaging of the Macallan 10yo fine oak.
    SP: Yellow-brown and black.
NTTD: Teal's a good call. But also, red? Blood red?...

Interesting topic! Working as a designer, I'm very much used to working with colours, so this is a fun exercise. I decided to take inspiration from interior colours, using the paint colours from Farrow & Ball as my "Bond palette". Not sure about all of these, but it gives a general idea of which colours I associate with each film.

It might not be the most colourful movie of the series, but DAF is probably the film I have the strongest colour association with – or rather a specific palette in mind. For me, that film is all about greyish and brownish colours, dark wood or brown furniture as well as chrome.

Love colours, so I'll join in! Must be said though I am influenced by the side colours each film received for the 2002 special edition releases.

Disregarding that for a moment, or at least trying to, I'll try to avoid shades of any kind (even though I must admit my favourite colour is typically a shade of blue: celeste / sky blue) :

    DN - brown
    FRWL - red
    GF - yellow
    TB - blue
    YOLT - orange
    CR67 - purple
    OHMSS- white
    DAF - brown
    LALD - red
    TMWTGG - yellow
    TSWLM - blue
    MR - black
    FYEO - blue
    OP - purple
    NSNA - red
    AVTAK - grey
    TLD - yellow
    LTK - blue
    GE - black
    TND - grey
    TWINE - blue
    DAD - white
    CR - green
    QOS - brown
    SF - grey
    SP - yellow
    NTTD - pink

    Fascinating thread.

I’ve always noticed the gold and brown hues of Goldfinger, the yellow/sand hues of Spectre, and to a lesser extent the grey of Skyfall.

But never consciously noticed any other films with specific colours - unless you count the bright sun / Carribean hues of DN and Thunderball contrasting with grey London

DN- light blue for Bond's outfit and the Jamaican setting
FRWL- grey, probably due to the train, Hagia Sophia interior, and aqueduct
GF- blue due to the hotel interior, the uniforms Goldinger's army, and all the sky shots in the movie
    TB- blue for obvious reasons
YOLT- orange-red for the sunset shots, the volcano, and being set in the land of the Rising Sun
OHMSS- white for the snow setting
DAF- grey simply for the many grey sets, and also Charles Grey
    LALD- yellow... not sure why
TMWGG- tan for Bond's safari suit, the sand on Scaramanga's island, and the overall warm look
TSWLM- turquoise for the Mediterranean setting
MR- light grey for the Star Wars-like sets and Bond's chrome-like suit
FYEO- brown for the earthy cinematography and less-modern settings
    OP- same
AVTAK- red for the Golden Gate bridge sequence
TLD- tan for Bond's suit and desert setting(s)
LTK- green for all the money in the film, plus the (inaccurate) special edition DVD cover with the rainforest
GE- grey for the cold, industrial settings
TLD- silver for the sleek, ultramodern, tech-y look
TWINE- orange for the earthy settings and candlelight
DAD- bright blue for both the Cuban and Arctic settings
CR- gold for the regal look of the casino, also due to the color correction
QOS- white because that color really pop, especially in the hotel scenes
SF- tan for reasons similar to TLD
SP- brown-yellow because that's how it looks
NTTD- purple for the sunset look

Love this thread idea. I have to give it more thought but I definitely know I associate OHMSS with green because that was the font color of the Signet paperback I first read.

A bit further afield but as a kid of the '80s I definitely remember the bold colors of both the Flemings and the Gardners.

If one aligns the dominant color from each scene chronologically, an interesting color palette graphic emerges (these are for sale). I guess modern films have put more thought into the color palettes and gone for more interesting color tones.

A fun thing to do is to try to guess which Bond movie these are from. The first is a Craig era film:
    19v9mRZQvWeQRvTTqigYHfg_ZKkiS02f.jpg?v=1618099423

Compare that to one of the Moore era:

And here is a Connery one:

    Can you guess them?
