What if EON did a film where it was bonds last mission

What if EON did a bond movie where he was near retirement, say he retires at the end of the movie. Bond is feeling the effects of age and is close to retirement. In the PTS maybe he screws up or comes close to screwing up because of his age. M has to fire him but agrees to give Bond one final mission, where Bond meets an old girlfriend. Lets say blofeld is in it, maybe just for one film only, and he gets the death he deserves (no being dropped down a chinmey). Anyway, bond saves the world again and at the end of the film bond marries the old girlfriend and retires.

But then after this movie EON do (in a way) another reboot. Don't take out all the characters or anything, just a TLD type reboot where they get a younger actor, then they carry on like they were doing before. The film would star either timothy dalton (1st choice, give him just one more film) or pierce brosnan if it was to be made now, maybe craig if it was made in the future. What do you all think.

  • I think this could work as it could be like the novel YOLT where Bond is very different after the death of his wife Tracy. I think this could work in Craig's Bond final Bond movie to send him off..But I do not want to see a reboot just someone else continue on as usual. It would be different from the usual formula of Bond movies

But... if they do a "Bond's last mission" movie... wouldn't it be the last of the series?
  • I think he means a separate stand alone, sort of like Batman's "Dark Knight Returns". Am I right, thelivingroyale?

Your idea has been done before:
Remember OHMSS? Bond was married and retiring so the battle at Piz gloria was his LAST mission. Then the girl was killed and he decided to come back ... and we continued with the adventures of 007...

LTK was also somewhat a "last mission".

Can you see James Bond final appearance being the result of his death ?

Some memorable movie characters have been ended tastefully i.e.

Maximus in Gladiator and Michael Corleone in The Godfather Part 3

It's an okay idea as long as it turns out it's not actually his last mission.
  • But James Bond isn't Gladiator or The Godfather series, it's a whole different ball game

You couldn't imagine Bond waking up and finding a horses head in bed with him for one thing,- although that was last seen with Moore and Chiles in Moonraker

I'm sure we've been down this avenue before, Bond's last mission etc, it's like you're indicating to the end of the franchise sometime soon, It won't happen, anytime soon

All I know is, Bond is here to stay for the immediate future

At the most I could imagine an uncertain open ending. A definite 'Death of Bond/ Bond's last Stand' I don't see happening.
  • It's a shame Connery is too old to do this. The Bond of Bonds playing the charecter one last time as 007 does his last mission. I think Dalton could be interesting in this role.
  • Watch The Rock and pretend they're saying 'James Bond' instead of 'Mason' :D

They could use the metal gear solid 4 formula bringing back a ageing and nearly dead connery for one final misson... on second thought i think they tried that with never say never again? :L
  • I think he means a separate stand alone, sort of like Batman's "Dark Knight Returns". Am I right, thelivingroyale?

    thats right

except with this bond would actually retire and never come back. But after they would just get a younger actor and carry on like this film never happened, whereas in OHMSS, the other films continued on from it and referenced it. This would be a stand alone.

    Ever heard of CR67?
  • Now this is a very interesting idea in my opinion. For one, it would create a level of excitement and eagerness for audiences to see a Bond film that hasn't really been met before. The closest we've come is with Casino Royale, because audiences were very curious to witness how Bond became 007 and it was something new for them in that respect. This would be the same except greatly amplified because you leave audiences to speculate as to how Bond will meet his end. The worlds greatest spy is only human after all. And of course the series would continue on afterwards. This would just be something very fresh and different to deliver to an audience.

Tom Mankiewicz once discussed the idea in an interview. As I recall it, Bond keeps getting out of scrapes by pure luck and knows it, but he can't stop until the mission is over. Once the mission is completed he retires, knowing he's not up to another. This wasn't a formal proposal, just a notion he mentioned in the interview.

EDIT: I *think* the interview was by the old fan publication Bondage. If my memory is correct, you can check it out in 007 magazine.

  • have the mission seemingly completed then killed out of the blue like get carter or rambo in the first blood novel.
