    DN (what else?)
I am also particularly fond of M's surprise visit in LALD and his scolding of Bond in GF.

All great candidates. Personally, even though I’m not the biggest fan of the overall film, my favourite M scene is the one from LALD.

Of the ones proposed I’d take OP I think. But as stated above, all of them are great.

I also love the end of SF with Bond and M with the Bond theme playing. Not much discussion, but stylish direction by Mendes.

Yeah, quite a lot to choose from. TLD is good, I like the (similar) GF and DAF ones, I actually quite enjoy AVTAK's one, GE is a bit of a classic, CR's are all great, SF has some of the best too... lots to enjoy.

Dishonourable mention to Moonraker's one where Bond reveals evidence of Drax's secret lab to M and M says "So there was a lab..!" Why would Bond lie? :D

I would have said LALD or TLD, but since neither on the list, I will go with TMWTGG, if only for M's wonderful reply to Bonds asking "Who would want me killed?"

I am a little shocked not a single scene with Judi Dench is nomitated!

Refraining from voting for this reason... :P

I do like the end to that scene a lot where M suggests that Bond goes and sorts it out himself but without actually saying it. Ruined only by Roger's deeply weird grin :D

Yes, I get that. Still, a great M/Bond scene!

I need to review them all before I can vote! :))
  • I expect the briefing scene from Dr. No will win this vote easily -- but I'm going to give the love to the briefing scene in Goldeneye this time around. A wonderful twist on the expected scenario, this one established Judy Dench's M AND Brosnan's Bond brilliantly.

I may have just found my new favorite YT channel! High quality clips of formula scenes from every film up through Spectre, including Never Say Never Again? Well done whoever put that together.

Just scanning through the thumbnails in that video, I'm reminded how good the Brosnan/Dench scene was in DAD too. The abandoned station for abandoned agents was a particularly cool setting.

I'm going to jump in this round and go with GE as well. It's such a fantastic scene and I love seeing the rollercoaster of attitude changes and feelings between the two in such a short few minutes. It's perhaps not as iconic as the one from DN though.

This is perhaps one of the most difficult categories, as there are so many good ones. Hence, I can only add a write-in for Thunderball. After the main briefing, M first shows he trusts Bond in his observation on the dead pilot, but then almost scolds him for his offer of going to Nassau. The scene blances between seriousness and humour on a particularly fine line, and runs with it.

That is a great scene. I like his dressing down of the officer M gives when he doubts Bond, but at the same time feel for the guy because he wasn't incorrect although it was a double. There's another good scene later when the home secretary dismisses Bond as pushing the panic button and M defends his agent.

Yes I particularly like that scene too.

"If double o-7 says he saw Duval and he was dead, that's enough for me to indicate inquiries."

    Then later

"Do you think she's worth going after?"
"I wouldn't put it quite that way sir."

Great stuff! Then you add in the delightful scene after with Moneypenny.

"You may be able to con the old man, but I know different...

"So do I Miss Moneypenny and kindly ask that you not refer to me as the old man."

"I think I had a hat when I came in."

  • Goldeneye for me. Judi putting Bond in his place is still a wonderfully written scene.

I will have to watch Thunderball again soon. I might try watching the Blofeld Trilogy films in novel order and see if that does anything to help my opinion of TB and YOLT. My vote is for Dr. No. Have to give this one to the Connery Lee combination.

It does sound like a cool idea, though I don't think YOLT would fit after Majesty's much better than DAF does.

Goldeneye for me. Judi putting Bond in his place is still a wonderfully written scene.

On a personal level, that scene is the start of the Dench M's tough love persona, in which she seemed to want to put Bond down and had a hard time having full confidence in her best agent. I was never much of a fan of that portrayal, Dench's talent aside.

TND is probably my favourite of the Brosnan era where the dynamics between him and M are concerned. She has full confidence in him there.

"What the hell is he doing?"
    "His job."

I know I may be late, but I'll have to go with DN (even if the best "office scene", for me, is OHMSS). Not only does it establish the premise, but it also shows that M is not blind.

Never too late to vote! Though I am fascinated with all the mentions of so many movies. I love the varied opinions and thoughts around the different write in votes. Of the 4 singled out by yours truly it seems it's between DN and GE for the win.

Lets see if any other votes trickle in and then declare a winner.

I'm not trying to select a 'best', but I like in TB, where it seems that Bond wants to go to Jamaica because of a picture of an attractive Person of Interest (POI) in the file - the sister of the pilot who hijacked a Vulcan jet with nukes on board. Bond explains that it is just a coincidence that the connection will lead to her and to Jamaica, but it's a nice one for Bond that his investigation will take that route in terms both of the location and the POI.
Broadening this consideration, it reminds me that the same director of the first two films, Terence Young - who was influential on Bond's wardrobe and appearance and certain scenes (Sylvia Trench in the first two), among other aspects, and who was away for GF - was back for TB. Perhaps coincidentally, but we got, in the Bond/M/Moneypenny earlier-in-film scene, a bit of a return to the FRWL "Case File with an Attractive POI" whom Bond will contact. We also got a glamorous Bond-in-the-casino scene again. Yes, these elements are in the books, but I still like having them again.
Generally speaking and overall, I like the Terence Young films. I like their look, glamor and smoothness.

Terence Young was definately the one who put the sugar on the cake when it comes to Bond, I think he's been instrumental in making Bond a cinematic character. The spy craze may heave started with GF, but it would never hit those highs without Dr. No and FRWL. They set out the most important aspects of the films. GF just cashed in on that.

I'll add my vote for DN. There are, however, quite a few scenes between Bond and M that are excellent IMO. I'm especially fond of the one in LTD.

I don’t like that take on M either, but it’s hard to deny that the entire scene is just so well written, and probably what set the stage of the Modern Era of Bond. When she’s telling him off, the dynamics of the series change right there and then. The blatant sexism of previous Bond films had no place in this new, exciting era. The women were going to be just as, and in some cases even more, capable than Bond. It sets the stage for future Bond/M scenes, much like Connery/Lee in Dr. No. But that’s all just my opinion though. I will say I prefer the traditional Bond/M scenes of the Connery/Moore era.
