I would love to see one of us produce a billion dollar franchise, and then come and rip into Barbara Broccoli because I'm sure if any of you were in her shoes, the franchise wouldn't be what you think it would be.

I think the point is that BB makes mistakes and has successes. Like her father, she’s intimately involved with the development of the films. I think unlike her father she gives directors much more latitude in making creative decisions. We can criticize her for certain issues with Spectre and NTTD’s productions but we should also understand how these issues came about.

This era has been incredibly successful financially and critically. So, if deserves the blame for its shortcomings then she also deserves praise for its achievements.

I understand that and I agree. I'm just sick of the "you can't criticize a movie unless you make one" mentality.

Although it would be interesting watching all the Little Lord Fauntleroys give it a go. It’d be like pushing a cat in the sea and saying, ‘swim’.

I agree with what @Walecs said but that would be really funny :))

    Indeed :))

I’m so excited. It’s like a holiday when a Bond film is released.

In that form it’s not a horrible idea. I guess just adding that aspect to the character of Blofeld was the issue.
Perhaps if the Oberhauser brother (or sister maybe) had been a secondary underling (Number Two!) that Blofeld indulged. I guess even then it’s unlikely that they’d grow up to enter the same business. Maybe Blofeld finds Oberhauser and grooms him/her because he wants to get to an MI6 officer.

Exactly. Having Oberhauser as a stand-alone villain or a lieutenant may have worked, and would have featured enough of a personal connection (even if a little redundant with Silva from Skyfall or Alec Trevelyan from Goldeneye).

Having Oberhauser build SPECTRE and his Blofeld persona because of the hatred he had towards a 11-year-old kid that his father was the legal guardian of, and who coincidentally becomes a MI6 agent in the 00 section is the most idiotic idea in the entire history of the franchise, and that's quite an achievement when we already have Die Another Day.
That's completely at odd with the whole initial concept behind SPECTRE, a deeply secretive society, whose plans are thwarted over and over again by Bond, whom the organization simply underestimates, Blofeld was an update of the classic literary Moriarty or Mabuse character, the evil mastermind at the center of a huge web. He's already dangerous, and when his involvement with Bond ultimately becomes personal, he's even more remarkable as an opponent. Bringing personal ties right from the beginning totally undermines that.

And, regarding the three previous entries, it raises more questions than it brings answers. If Blofeld's ultimate goal is to hurt this particular enemy, that's terrible leadership that resulted in huge fiascos (as Bond defeated Le Chiffre and Mr. Green, found about Mr. White, killed Silva, etc.). Why would the rest of the organization agree on plans that look like the most expensive psychotherapy session in the history of humanity?

YES................ the single worst idea in the entire series. I truly hope NTTD helps to lessen this idiotic concept.

Agreed. I am not sure what the issue is with the direction Babs has taken. SF and SP made a boatload, and casual fans (at least ones I know) LOVED SP and didn;'t care about Brothergate. Regardless, she made the key decision: hiring Daniel Craig and not relenting until he signed on the dotted line. She saw something that others did not...and there was blowback. But she knew. And it worked.

It's better than Waltz saying point blank he wasn't Blofeld.

I’m pretty much going in under the assumption that he is Dr. No at this point. If he isn’t, great. If he is, I hope they make it work.

I hope he isn’t. Safin seems like he has some originality and the producers have even said he’s a nasty piece of work that puts Bond through hell.

Personally I think he’s just being playful: I don’t see him being No. I don’t really see the link. But I may well be wrong.

Wrong, I'm afraid, on several counts. That's like claiming a person who is not in politics cannot criticize an elected official's policies.

I, as we all do, pay to see, buy and enjoy the output of Mrs. Broccoli and Mr. Wilson, and have done so out of my own pocket since 1989. Anyone such as Babs who puts themselves in the public domain and makes a living off of it is utterly fair game for any kind of criticism.

...seem to remember the majority of your comments (back in '14-'15 when I had the time to frequent the board) as being sound & objective, surprised that you of all posters are having a huff about my dig at Babs :-t

Edit: this in response to the "if you don't make 'em don't criticize 'em" rhetoric, by the way. Just to be clear

Barbaras era or Eon in general have had more critical misfires than hits I would say.

Goldeneye, Casino Royale, and Skyfall have been their only acclaimed films.

I would put TWINE and Spectre in the serviceable or acceptable category.

TND, DAD, and QOS are kind of bottom barrel in quality.

EON arguably hasn’t had a great track record since the 1960s, which was their strongest and most consistent of all the decades. Since the 1970s become a crapshoot. You get LALD, but you then get TMWTGG. You get TLD, but then you get LTK.

Brosnan’s run probably had the worst, with the one two three sucker punch that was TND/TWINE/DAD after the very good GE. Craig so far has had a 50/50 track record, which has been on a every other film pattern. If that holds up, that means NTTD may be the good one to go out on.

Maybe that's why they're releasing it tonight? It does seem a bit early for the film. Maybe I'm wrong.

    With friends like these...sheesh.

We could debate the finer points of each film but Bond, even at his worst, is better than many.

EON’s record is no worse than any other production company/studio. The risk is the reward. I like their cinematic voice, and I support them because they’ve earned it.

My god the cinematography... This might be the second Bond film in Craig’s tenure (behind Skyfall) that leaves your breathless with every frame.

There are a couple Matera shots that look slightly synthetic. I don't know if some of these shots are CGI-enhanced or if Sandgren is the best cinematographer to have graced a Bond film.

I know what you mean, it has that slick and almost too good to be real look to it. But I’m gonna have to say Sandgren is just that great of a cinematographer.
  • The shot of Bond watching Madeleine sleep in the hotel room may be the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen in a Bond movie. And for a series that includes Skyfall, that’s saying A LOT.

As for the song it reminds me a lot of TWOTW but much better executed. Haunting production, excellent vocals, thematically relevant, and unmistakably Bond.
