Just to add to the discussion with a little bit of fun. As you know, one of the mistakes Fleming did while writing DN was to give Bond a holster meant for a revolver (the Berns-Martin Triple-Draw holster) with his Walther PPK automatic pistol. Weeeell, Q had something to say about that, in the Q Manual supplement for the James Bond 007 role-playing game way back in the 80s. Here goes :

Q Evaluation : The Bers-Martin Triple-Draw holster has long been a favorite among our "OO" section, 007 in particular. The additional bulk of the holster is considered a small price to pay for the additional speed gained, speed which is often the only edge an agent has against opponets armed with heavier weapon.

I should like to clear up one detail which has annoyed me over the past few years : the supposed error of using a Berns-Martin Triple-Draw holster with a Walther PPK, as the commercial model is meant only for revolvers. We here at Q Branch take an enormous amount of equipment which we adapt, modify, refine and then redesign if necessary. The Aston-Martin DB-V which 007 drove is scarcely the same automobile which was delivered to us, yet the name remains. The case is is similar to that of the Berns-Martin holster. Our design is substantially, and necessarily, different from the commercial model.

One last note about the Walther PPK : As it was used in DN to replace a gun (the Beretta .25) which had jammed at a critical moment, I find it ironic that his reputation was shot down (pun definitely intended) by an incident during which it jammed at a critical moment : the attempted kidnapping of HRH Princess Ann on march 20th 1974. An incident that is recalled in John Gardner's Licence Renewed, and is the reason why Bond himself stopped to use the PPK, going first for a Browning High Power, then for a H & K VP 70, then a H & K P 7, and then for the ASP for the remainder of Gardner's run.

Despite mixing up literary Bond and film Bond Always leaving a strange taste in the mouth, that´s Sound reasoning from Q there.
