    Controversial opinion:

    SUPERMAN II (1981)

    I actually LOVE the cellophane \S/. I think it's bad-ass.

    splash_780-1241.jpg

I always understood that the cellophane S was not an inherent power of Superman or his suit, but something triggered by and in the Forest of Solitude.

Probably the same with some of those other powers he seems to only have in the Fortress of Solitude. That disappearing/re-appearing illusion gimmick he does: "Wrong again, Zod!!"

Yes, it always seemed to me that they were Kryptonian boobytraps, meant to defend the owner of the place against intruders.

@MaxCasino Brainiac should have been the villain of Superman 3.

I wonder how Brainiac would have looked in Superman III? Would they follow the Curt Swan imagery or give him a make over? Brando for instance didn't follow the Curt Swan image of Jor-El with that green costume topped by a sun logo on the chest.
I'd say the same for Hackman's Lex Luther. I remember Luther wearing a purple/green costume in those comics.

I think they would have gone for a different aesthetic, akin to the one in first two movies. A Brainiac with crystals on his clothes/body? I wonder who would have played him.[/

    Christopher Walken.

I find Se7en more satisfying but then they're different films.

Se7en is a serial killer thriller and Zodiac is a based on true events involving a serial killer. Both great films regardless.

I prefer Se7en. Still don't know how they got away with THAT ending!!
A friend of mine told me when he went to see it, a drunk in the front row threw up, and the stench added to the overall atmosphere of the film!! 😝

    Lovely 😆

I remember how shell shocked the audience looked coming out the cinema the first time I saw it!

I appreciate SE7EN far more now than I did in '95. It's improved with age, IMO.
    Controversial opinion:
PULP FICTION on the other hand I find has dated badly.
Doesn't hold up in this day and age.

The only Godfather 3 I'll ever watch is going to be this upcoming re-edit that comes out in December.

I'm a fan of all Tarantino films (although I haven't seen Once upon). Strangely, I prefer almost all of his other films. I would rank Kill Bill 2 and Jackie Brown on the same good level as Pulp Fiction and would rate all the others higher. Well, apart from Death Proof, which is fun but almost without a plot.

I think QT would make a better author than screenplay writer. He writes his screenplays like novels.

Interesting perspective. He certainly nails dialogue which would translate well to novels, but his films are also very visually cinematic. I've heard good things about this novelization, might have to check it out.

Not sure how much of an opinion or controversial it is, but I find videos of trains travelling long distances in YouTube strangely compelling. Must be the lockdown.

I could see that. I watch a lot of “mundane” things on YouTube as well.

I find myself enjoying clip compilations from an HD camera on the front of a boat, making its way through the canals of Venice.

I'm glad I'm not alone. I find it both relaxing and, for lack of a better word, inspiring. It's repetitive, but it's pure scenery porn and I can generally watch it at work (if I work from home of course) without interruption.

I used to enjoy countryside/hillside cycling videos for the same reason.

I watch a lot of woodworking / cooking videos with no voice over or narration (not “how to” videos). Watching a 20 minute video of a chef in a high end Japanese restaurant cooking wagu beef with the care they put into it is very satisfying.

I had more fun watching that train going through Norway in winter (2 hours into a 9 hours journey do far) than many high budget movies. It's true that I watch it when I do tedious, repetitive work.

If you like that you should try "Hurtigruten minutt for minutt". It’s the same production company and features an old postline boat traveling almost the entire Norwegian coastline. It lasts more than a week in total and the scenery is even more spectacular than the train journey. ;) ;))

Yeah maybe, but I'm into trains.

I might have mentioned this one before: I prefer the French title of Die Hard, which is Piege de Crystal, which translated into English is Crystal Trap, to the original title. Oh and I prefer the novel to the movie.

It is definitely up there in greatness. It’s a shame that Superman movies can’t move on (in a positive way) from the 1978 movie. One of the problems is that the crews think that Superman has only 2 villains: Lex Luthor and General Zod. Even Doomsday was a combination of them both in BVS!

Ironically I think the only Superman film to have escaped the shadow of the ‘78 film was Man of Steel. It has a lot of flaws, I think it’s tone doesn’t work for Superman, but I really loved Cavil, and Michael Shannon. Matter of fact I kind of like the Zack Snyder DCEU films, I know they’re not the best, but I’m a huge fan of both Superman and Batman, their my two favorite comic book characters. If I can tolerate Nuclear Man, and Arnold Schwarzenegger’s Mr. Freeze, I can handle and like BvS :)) :))

I agree with the over usage of Luthor and Zod too. I’d personally like to see Brainiac, Metallo, Toyman, or even Mr. Mxyzptlk in a future film.

I don't know if it's true, but while debatable, I don't think it's even remotely controversial. Now if you'd say something like the first X-Men movie, or Spider-Man, or Ang Lee's Hulk...

I just think it’s the gold standard. Every comic book performance should be measured up against Christopher Reeve, and even then I’m hard pressed to think of performances better than that of Reeves as Superman. Yeah the film has aged quite a bit, but that doesn’t hold the film back or anything. It’s just a timeless classic.

I could see how people would think of the first X-Men, or the first Spider-Man as the gold standard though. Those are pretty good films in and of themselves.

Seeing it at the cinema at around 12 years old was quite an experience. I was in awe of the film, and at the time preferred it to Star Wars.

The best superhero film ever made 👍

    Controversial opinion:

I feel SUPERMAN IV: THE QUEST FOR PEACE is the definitive Superman movie.
A more chiseled and tough performance by Reeve, the ever reliable Gene Hackman returning as Lex Luthor, a tighter run-time and superb use of location substitutions. That industrial park made an amazing United Nations locale!

Just kidding, the first, to me is still the best, but I do enjoy the lesser appreciated Reeve entries.

    Carry on......................
