Wink To The Past

edited November 2011 in Skyfall Posts: 612
I found it painful sitting through Die Another Day, having to endure all those references to past Bond movies. That was the 40th anniversary, now we're at the 50th. Are you scared the writers are going to make the same mistake again in SkyFall, and throng Bond references down our necks? Should there even be any references?

I highly doubt they will be anything like that even though this is the bigger anniversary. The lesson of Die Another Day has been learnt.

I think everyone involved in production believes the best way to celebrate the fiftieth anniversary is to make the best film possible.

Exactly. And Mendes isn't the type to pull that stuff. He knows what do do and not to do.

Oh, pish! I like the old references in DAD. Saying that, I am POSITIVE they will do nothing of the sort in Skyfall. I whole-heartedly agree with @shadowonthesun

I didn't find those references painfull, but rather enjoyable. And if you think that was the worst thing about DAD you had a decent enough evening/afternoon/morning. ;-)

I wouldn't mind one or two references - and done classily, they'd probably work too.

Frankly, given Mendes is clearly a real fan of Bond (listen to him put the questioner right in the press conference about Martin Campbell and John Glen's involvement in the filming of their films' action sequences), I wouldn't be surprised if he subtely put one or two in either...

It's fair to say there will be one or two subtle references in SF.

@shadowonthesun - you're spot on, there. Something I thought about briefly at some point. Surely, making the smartest, classiest Bond film they can would be more of a genuine tip of the hat to Fleming than any 'homage' could ever be.

Exactly QBranch, Making SF comparable to the classics is the way to celebrate #50.

I got it. At the end of the film with the first few bars of the James Bond Theme. With The end of Skyfall but James Bond will return in( B24 title here).

Then the JB theme gives way to "nobody dose it better" with stills from all the films, faded gold over the credits.

I like it. Make it happen.

Perhaps 'Nobody Dose it Better' should be the Dr House theme ;-)

But they already did a Nobody Does it Better montage for Desmond Llewelyn.

But it wasn't in the film was it.
  • this new lot - have already done winks to the past (heritage); DC - Dr.No - swimming (yawn) trunks. DB5 as well.

Goldfinger homage in QofS and the head to toe oil thing with Ms.Fields (why they didn't rewrite her part to make her the new Moneypenny I will never understand).

DC's b/card for Universal Exports had a RM's undercover character name from AVTK; I think.

There might be more but they do it anyway. So I suggest we will expect more little references.

    The gunbarrel sequence.
After Bond shoots, when the gunbarrel moves to the bottom corner of the screen I'd like to see the white dots get smaller and disappear (like in FRWL & GF) as opposed to the standard circle opening up into the PTS. A nice little nod to the past.
  • Well with the 50th anniversary next year it'll be open season for throwbacks to past 007 adventures, I hope they keep it to a minimum, or better still, not at all

All I'd expect is a marked improvement on Solace, and a release that when departing theaters would make you think 'I must see that again', which I did with Casino Royale

I didn't (really) like the bit in Die Another Day when Brosnan was with Cleese and they showed a majority of Bond apparatus from previous Bond pictures, and Berry coming out of the sea in a Honey Ryder tribute?

The less said the better, although they will never better the 1962 original and shouldn't have tried

I love DAD, but yeah, they might as well have just made an entire film using footage from previous Bond films.

    A-WHAAAAAAAAAAAA??!?!?!

I don't even consider DAD a Bond movie. I just prefer to leave it alone.

You'll find quite a few people here enjoy DIE ANOTHER DAY.

Really? It's better than most Hollywood junk, but I think it's the debatably the weakest film. Die Another Day and Diamonds Are Forever are tied for my least favourite, followed (but not closely) by Live And Let Die.

On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Casino Royale are my favourites. Just in case you were wondering.
  • If you take Ms Ciccone's God awful theme tune and ill advised cameo and Berry out of it it wasn't THAT bad, there was quite a bit to get involved in, Toby Stephens was a fun villain, but I didn't enjoy the Michael Madsen character much, the pre credits sequence was one of the best in recent years

Horrible ending with Brosnan picking diamonds out of Ms Berrys navel though

I haven't made up my mind yet whether I think DAD's the weakest or not. It probably is, but I still enjoy it thoroughly. I don't think too deeply into it, it's just a fun bit of escapism. It's far from my favourite though (that being From Russia).
