HOW IMPORTANT IS BOND THEME - The Beat Goes On

edited October 2011 in Bond Movies Posts: 76
Even the Most MACHO of BOND007 Fans have to acknowledge the tremendous public awareness and importance of the MUSIC of BOND.
It is HOLLYWOOD meets PINEWOOD.
Each decade of Bond Films has been influenced by the Music of that Era.
Songs such as "GOLDFINGER", "DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER", "FOR YOUR EYES ONLY", make the Movie that much more memorable and enjoyable.
It's a very tricky thing.
If it's too contemporary it alienates the older venue audience.
It it's not new enough it does not meet the expectations of the GAME THEORY FANS.
How Important is BOND Theme for BOND 23.

It is extremely important. Bond films created a staple at the beginning with DN. Each film has a PTS and then a theme design with song. Not many films can say they influenced their own series like that. Each movie is unique, as is every theme and design. You will never find a better place where not only Bond, but guns, sexy girls, and great music are all present than in Bond themes.

I think this theme for Bond 23 is very important. This theme needs to establish something special, something that only You Know My Name has done in lets say the last 5 films.

They gotta get this one right!!!

The theme IS 33.333% of the main character. Otherwise you have Never Say Never Again again.

I cannot for the life of me think of a single instance of a "macho" Bond fan denying the importance of the film's score. In fact, I'd say that some of the forum members who pride themselves on their manliness are the biggest proponents of the likes of John Barry and a "proper" score. So I'm having a lot of trouble seeing what your argument actually is.

The theme was used just once in CASINO ROYALE. And it was used very effectively then. I see no reason why this cannot be repeated. I'd much rather see a Bond theme used sparingly than blaring every time Bond walks into a room.

Just dont overuse it. I agree with shadow that the use in CR was absolutely perfect and I hope they do something similar in this new one. Use it when Bond starts to win basically, not in every gadgety scene like the brosnan movies...

I think it's important. It tells you when he's done something good so those of us whose minds have become desensitised to the violence know when it's ok to cheer. Or go "whoop! whoop!" or whatever it is the kids are doing these days. Probably curling their lips in distain and derision.

I would love Arnold to bring back the '007' theme for B23 as a tribute to John Barry. Not been heard since Moonraker and would be fitting for the 50th anniversary.

Barry's estate owns the rights to the 007 Theme so we won't be hearing it anytime soon sadly. Arnold himself, like us fans, would love to use it as he's said as much in interviews.

One day it may well happen. EON should get involved.

What theme from Moonraker are we talking about. The one that used to play everytime Brozzer pulled out a gadget, or the one that played at the end of CR? Why cant they use that?

Wait, nevermind -_-. This one, right? :

Still, why cant they use it?

That's The James Bond Theme. I'm taking about The 007 Theme heard in five Bond films, From Russia With Love, Thunderball, You Only Live Twice, Diamonds Are Forever and Moonraker.

And can I find it on YouTube: No. Drat. X(
  • Which theme is the 007 theme? I'm going through my soundtracks and am not sure which piece you guys mean. I take it it isn't the 'Bond 77' theme...
  • ...of course not, that wasn't John Barry, duh

  • Right so I've found the 007 theme ...thought it was only in From Russia and Thunderball ...when does it come back in Moonraker, it's bugging me now.

And yes it is about time they found a way of bringing it back in my opinion.

It appears in the Amazon boat chase in MR, as best as I recall. I don't often watch MR or DAD for that matter, maybe just once a year if I need some laughs as opposed to some serious spying.

The theme is extremely important in my opinion. This is what Barry did that gave the movies such a unique character, he took the title theme and used it throughout the movie. Where he was so brilliant in creating them is that he could then use some of them for action or for romance. I think that why I love the LALD soundtrack so much, because George Martin was able to use the theme for both. With other composers not so much. Hamlisch and Conti were able to use their themes for romance but not action, but again it gave the movie character as a result. Kamen and Serra didn't use the title or end themes for anything in the movie and the movies lack a musical identity in my opinion. Arnold doesn't do that either when he didn't write the title song (I don't remember him using any of that awful DAD theme but then I rarely watch it so maybe I'm wrong there), but he has shown a strong sense of using it for action when he has done it. He hasn't figured it out how to use it for romance yet, but maybe that's not his style. In CR he used YKMN extremely well in parts and I would argue with anyone who didn't feel "Vesper's Theme" was not as hauntingly beautiful as anything Barry ever wrote. I hope he can do that again. This last score, some thought he took a step forward in his musical approach in terms of complexity, but even though I fully understand those nuances in technical terms I think the soundtrack lacks identity. He gave a little nod to AWTD in one or two scenes but there was no real romance in the movie and perhaps that is why I find QOS lacking in this sense.

From Russia With Love: 007 theme is used during the fight sequence at the gypsy camp and when Bond takes the Lektor.

Thunderball: used during the big underwater fight.

You Only Live Twice: used during Bond's takeoff with Little Nellie.

Diamonds Are Forever: used when Bond uses the crane to whack Blofeld's mini-sub against the control building.

Moonraker: used during the boat chase.

Eon doesn't have to beg. It just has to be willing to pay a royalty.
  • oooooooooooooooh the boat chase! Of course. Thing is I always had it in my head it was called 'Bond takes the Lektor' or something and this is the first time I realised it appeared in a Moore film - Cool!!

Yeah just listened to it in my Moonraker soundtrack, a slower version I think. I guess after the Monty Norman rights issues with the Bond theme he wanted something he could keep as his own. A shame they can't use it. Reminds me of the Ron Grainer/Doctor Who theme issue. We will never hear that theme in Doctor Who outside of credits sequences, despite being the main theme.

Thanks for jogging my memory. It was about time I put these soundtracks onto my iPod. Great listening!

Would Barry's estate be willing to do that for them? I take it it'll be harder to do so now he's no longer with us or will this make things even more difficult?

An excellent piece of music indeed. But completely misused in that chase scene. It's too slow and too mellow for an action scene. I think it would have fit much better in the infamous "Bondeo" scene in CASINO ROYALE, with Bond arriving in the Bahamas

Yeah, the '007 Theme' used during the Moonraker chase is slightly out of place (however it is a great listen by itself). I know why they used it, but it is too lumbering. By that time in the film though, I was lumbering through, too ;-)

Bond 23 NEEDS more Bond theme. I know where they were coming from with the withholding of it in CR, but when those end credits came on and the Bond theme blared in my face, I for sure thought the next film would get back to 'tradition'. But I was frustrated to find out (after purchasing QOS's score) that the Bond theme was barely used in Quantum of Solace! No, it shouldn't be so overused that I'm rolling my eyes by the middle of the film, but Bond 23 really needs more James Bond theme. We need a Bond theme crescendo; use it sparingly throughout the film and all of a sudden during the biggest action scene of the film...

BAH BAH! DUUUUUUUHHHHH. BAH BAH! DUUUUUUUUUUHHHHH.........

    I'm getting goosebumps here.

Let's face it, the Bond Theme is not "important" to the quality and/or success of a Bond film - we just like hearing it.

Didn't realise it was owned by JB estate but I would have thought with a little collaboration with Eon bearing in mind the 50th angle thrown in something could be worked out. Possibly crediting Barry in "memory of". It's a wonderful piece of music and Arnold should really push for this.

It would be great for Bond 23 to be dedicated to John's memory. Hopefully everything works out swimmingly on that front.

i haven't read all these posts, so it might be a repeat.
I love the bond theme, and i think it needs to be in the movie somewhere, but not overused imo.
