James Bond Villains etc. and the Use of Archaic Weapons, Methods and Devices

In this thread I want to collate a list (if possible) of all of the archaic weapons, methods and devices used by James Bond and especially the villains in the Bond films, books and comic strips etc. It will mainly apply to the Bond films however as I think that most examples of such archaic weapons, methods and devices come from there.

Anyway, here's my starter list so far:

Le Chiffre (CR novel) - Carpet Beater (archaic nowadays at least)
Le Chiffre (CR 06 Film) - Knotted Rope
Mr Big (LALD novel) - Keelhauling
Kristatos (FYEO film) - Keelhauling
Blofeld (YOLT novel) - Samurai sword, katanas
Caber (Licence Renewed) - Dueling Pistol
Gobinda (OP) - Blunderbuss
Max Zorin (AVTAK) - Fire axe
General Konstantin Chernov (No Deals, Mr Bond) - Large Mace and chain
Silva (SF) - Antique Duelling Pistols
Elektra King (TWINE) - Antique Torture Device
Sir Gustav Graves/Bond (DAD) - Antique swords at Blades club
Dominic Greene (QoS) - Fire axe
Bond/Kincaid (SF) - Antique shotguns

Can we think of any more to add to the list?

What is the purpose of these old and archaic weapons in Bond's world would you say?

As always, I'd love to hear from you!

  • Good idea for a thread, Dragonpol.

I would note one thing straightaway: Le Chiffre used a carpet beater in the novel, but in the film the torture implement appeared to be a very thick rope tied into a large knot at one end.
  • Would Dominic Greene's axe be considered archaic? It's certainly crude and simple.

    Katanas in YOLT novel?

Although it's not necessarily archaic, Bond's PPK is a WWII weapon. It was a Nazi side-arm and the gun that Hitler killed himself with.

Bond (MR) - Antique glass-handled sword
Caber (Licence Renewed) - Duelling Pistol
    Gobinda (OP) - Blunderbuss
Silva (SF) - Antique Duelling Pistols
Elektra King (TWINE) - Antique Torture Device

I'd have to pull you up and say a carpet beater is not a weapon.

I'd add Graves using a broad sword and does he also use a samurai sword? In fact probably all the swords in that scene are antique, if not actually archaic, given they are in glass cabinets.

OK, I've amended the title a bit as I feel it was too restrictive by focusing only on archaic weapons. Let's open things up a bit!

Well, in that case, keel hauling in both the novel LALD and the film FYEO. If we're expanding, of course. ;)

Yes, I was about to add that one myself. It's one of the reasons I decided to expand the criteria (as it were) in this thread. :)
