3) Doctor No coldly but entertainingly addresses Bond at the diner table.

2) 006 speeches on the train.

and...

1) Largo orders Quist in the shark pool, hears the satisfying sounds of a painful death and walks away while indifferently kissing his ring.

    3) Goldfinger has Bond on his table and has his laser on course to cut 007 in half. The camera switching from a terrified Bond to the laser to rousing music is brilliant. Thank God Bond mentioned Operation GrandSlam.

    2) Red Grant has Bond on his knees(not what you think) and has his gun in hand. Bond must think creatively as he is caught in yet another pickle.

    1) Le Chiffre uses his tell on a good hand, dupes Bond, and the look on 007's face is brilliant. After the bout, all he can do is sit in place, stiff. Once again, thank you Felix for the investment.

Excellent choice. It keeps telling me Bond will lose this one. No doubt about it. Grant's position is so strong here. Wonderful scene. Makes Bond's escape all the more earned.

It would have been horrible 2 films in @Dimi. But thank God Bond can outsmart villains to fall directly into a plot. Sadly that's why Grant isn't higher on my list. If Bond wanted one last cigarette I would have said to shut the hell up and let me do my job. When he told Grant to take the money in his case, I would have killed Bond and then taken the money. If Bond was dead, the trap of tear gas wouldn't make you vulnerable. Oh well. I don't like to criticize FRWL. I enjoy villains that give Bond no room for improvisation.

In fact, that is why CR worked so well for me. Bond had been attacked, poisoned and tortured. Especially in the latter case, death had been very close. Yet had it not been for Vesper negotiating Bond's survival, Quantum might still have gotten to him as long as she was with him, offering him a tremendously weak spot he was unaware of.

Indeed @Dimi. I agree with everything.

1 > LTK when DARIO falls into the grinder

2 > FRWL when GRANT and BOND exchange words on the train

3 > GF, CR in both cases both villains(GOLDFINGER, LeCHIFFRE) had BOND literally by the balls
    GF (BOND on the table)
    CR (BOND in the chair)
    ---------------------------------------------------------------------
4 > GE when 006(thought long dead) reveals himself to BOND

5 > TB, LARGO at the card table in the casino

6 > LALD when MR.BIG reveals to BOND that he's actually KANANGA

GE, either 006's reveal, or 006's ultimatum on the train: save the girl, or save the day.

Drax's speach about "law and order in the heavens" is sure to be another great piece of villainy that can't be missed.

    3. Dr No finally appears.

    2. Goldfinger introduces Bond to laser technology.

    1. Le Chiffre dies scratching Bond's balls.

Excellent phrasing for your #1 choice @Kerim!

Great topic! I was contemplating on doing this one myself.

    In no particular order:

-Bond and Dr. Kananga in the Fillet of Soul basement
-Bond and General Orlov in the train car
-Bond and Dr. No at the dinner table
    1. Bond vs. LeChiffre at the poker table (LeChiffre "wins" then Bond lays the beatdown-- bloody tear... Awesome)
    2. Largo seals the Shark Tank on Bond and his henchman
    3. Goldfinger's laser machine

After that it gets really tough because I love 006 vs. 007 on the satellite and the train, Bond vs. Red Grant, and for some reason I have always been a big fan of Elektra almost killing Bond in TWINE then Zukovsky steps in. But the top three are no brainers for me.

If I could thrown in another, it'd be when Bond guns down Elektra King in cold blood. That's one of those scenes where the re-wind button comes in handy!

"Drown Mr Bond?.....I doubt you will get the chance to drown..."

Kananga moves in on Bond and Solitaire tied to the cradle with an unsheathed knife and begins to slice Bonds arm. The blood trickles and Kanangas eyes light up in pleasure.

"Observe Mr Bond.....the instruments of Armeggeddon.."

Those great submarines start inching their way out of Liparus while Anya and Bond watch helplessly. Strombergs voice echoes around the cavernous interior.

"You are not here to ask questions! You forget to whom you are speaking!"

A terrified Tania has the temerity to ask "why?" to a bullying Rosa Klebb. The SMERSH defectors voice is like a whipcrack and she brings her whisk down on the table hard.

    Too...many...choices :-t

I think if I were to wittle it down to three it would be these.

    1. The cemetary scene in GE. The atmosphere built up prior to Bean's reveal is superb and the speech he gives ("only to come home, well done, good job but sorry old boy - everything you've risked your life and limb for has changed") captures the cynical side of old fashioned English patriotism wonderfully. Brosnan also does a great job in this scene despite not saying that much. It's one of the few times Bond looks genuinely shocked and lost for words.

    (1.15 - "Hello James")

    2. The shark tank scene in Spy. The juxtaposition here is wonderful as the soothing music (in the form of J.S. Bach) is being played over a terrified woman's screams. Kurt Jurgen's god-like voice booms over the speakers ("IT WAS YOU WHO BETRAYED ME! YOU HAD ACCESS TO ALL THE INFORMATION! NOW YOU WILL PAY THE PENALTY"). The scene is completed by a very dry line from Stronberg "once again gentlemen...my most profound thanks". Superb! Stromberg had relitively little screen-time but IMO he's an underrated villain.

    3. The final meeting between Bloefeld, Klebb and Kronsteen in FRWL. Klebb looks terrified as she confronts the furious yet frightfully calm Blofeld. Kronsteen is his usual arrogant self ("who is Bond, compared with Kronsteen") and ultimately pays for it with the shoe ("12 seconds, one day we must invent a faster working venom"). Classic scene.

    Honourable mentions:

    -Corine's death in MR
    -Dr No's speech in...Dr No
-The face off at the dinner table in TMWTGG - by far the best thing in the film.
-"look after Mr Bond, see that some harm comes to him"
    -Dr Kaulfman in TND
-Electra King torturing Bond in TWINE (yep. I like that scene, mixes sex and death in very Bond-esque fashion).
-Le-Chiffe having the balls to torture Bond in Casino Royale
-Xenya Onatopp at the Grand Hotel in GE
-Anything Donald Pleseance says in YOLT
    -THAT scene in GF

Also, how could I forget Bloefeld and Irma Bunt killing Tracy in OHMSS.

Just a thought. I personally find the SPECTRE agents who aren't Blofeld scarier and vastly more menacing than the big chief himself, that is when we see his face. Dr. No, Klebb and Largo for example, all ooze a certain frightening evil combined with the talent to actually pull their schemes off, whereas the volcano, Piz Gloria and Whyte House Blofeld never have that effect on me. I believe this has something to do with who was cast as Blofeld. In retrospect, we got Dr. Loomis, Kojac and the narrator for the Rocky Horror Picture Show. I like what these guys did as Blofeld but I could never feel the genuine threat anymore in Twice, Majesty and Diamond. Out of these three, only Savallas was given a truly menacing plot anyway, which might be why he still comes out of this as the better Blofeld for me. That said, when Blofeld was around, but 'seen' only as Anthony Dawson, and heard as Dawson or Wiseman, I could believe him as a very dangerous man. Lesson learned: they should have kept Blofeld forever in the dark, no matter how much fun we have with Pleasence, Savallas and Gray.

What you are saying it was peoples fear of Blofeld that sold the character for you.

The fact that he had the power of life and death over his employees was very eerie and sold the power of SPECTRE. If they treated their employees this way how would they treat everyone else.

Proffesors Dents fear of Dr No, Klebbs fear of Blofeld and Osatos fear of Blofeld upped the ante somewhat.

As for Pleasance, Savalas and Gray - well, I love them all. Each of them have some great scenes and lines.

"Mr Bond, they told me you were assassinated in Hong Kong.."
"Yes, this is my second life.."
moves Hans out of the way.
"You only Live Twice, Mr Bond.."

"Now now Mr Bond you must be absolutely calm before we let you back into polite society.."

"As Roquefault once said, humility is the last form of conceit.."

You are absolutely correct there, @actonsteve. Which is why I don't think we oughtn't to know who's the leader of Quantum.

James Bond: My department know I'm here. When I don't report they'll retaliate.
Max Zorin: If you're the best they've got, they're more likely try and cover up your embarrassing incompetence.

Zorin is insane; he really is psychotic. I saw someone else say something about this yesterday, and didn't notice because I hadn't seen AVTAK in some time until last night. When Zorin fails at the end and is about to fall off of the Golden Gate Bridge, he smiles and laughs. He's crazy. It's almost as if he still beat Bond, whether his operation failed or not.

Yes, Zorin is quite the psycho! I love that scene in the forest after Bond finds Tibbett dead in the car.
Bond: "Killing Tibbett was a mistake!"
Zorin: "I'm about to make the same mistake twice."

@00Beast, Zorin is overly cocky in that scene, haha. I love it.
@Creasy47: Yeah, Zorin is very cocky, but it makes the scene even better when Bond shuts him down with his line, "Oh, it's not mutual." Zorin's grin vanishes instantly!

Just like in QoS, when Greene tells Bond 'My friends call me Dominic.', and he retorts with 'I'm sure they do.'

Just throws in a smirk at the end of it, and Greene doesn't appreciate it in the slightest.

@doubleo and @00Beast, that build up with Grant is amazing. Very intense, all the way up to that beautiful fight. It's scenes like that that make me appreciate a fight much, much more.
  • 1 - Always have loved the seen where Bond & Natalya are being question by Mishkin. Then suddenly in all his military splendour Ourumov bursts in and steals the show in a basic but not OTT sequence.

I personally think that Ourumov was an underused threat & shame he was killed before that geek Boris.

2 - Red Grant vs Bond on the train. What else can be said except classic.

3 - Yep have to mention Whitaker but when he both knocks 007 down with drawer & aims the canon the facial expressions made by Dalton hilarious each time. top marks for a kinda rushed ending.

@Whitaker, I agree about Ourumov. He was a great villain. I still love the back and forth banter between Bond and Mishkin before Ourumov bursts in.
