I've always sworn that I'd give the next guy the benefit of the doubt and see the film itself before judging. The idea of Tom Holland is making that difficult, though, I have to 'fess. Amazon did make an effort to cast an appropriate actor as Jack Reacher, so you'd hope that Holland wouldn't even be on the radar for Bond, tbh. Here's hoping that LucknFate's contact was indeed just referring to the Aston Martin thing.

I’m normally for giving people chances but Tom Holland is an automatic no from me and the possibility of him being cast does not bode well for Amazon if they’re serious.

The Bonds are shrinking down to my height now!
I wish I could say I'm ambivalent for us short folks...but I'm not. Bond must be tall!

It’s not so much the height for me as it’s just such a bland way of catering to a younger audience.

    He tried pitching the idea for a younger James Bond film around the filming of Spider-Man - Far From Home in which he essentially described the idea as “Not being revealed as a Bond film until the end.” Like that could ever be a damn possibility - here’s a quote from him;

"He was supposed to just be a kid who was graduating into the SAS and goes on a mission, which is obviously exciting and adventurous. At the end of the film, he would be recruited into MI:6 and given the status of double-O and the title of James Bond," he said. I thought it was really cool, but no one else, I guess, thought it was cool."

    Geez I wonder why 🙄

It eventually got developed into Uncharted, which wasn’t great. It’s another instance of a big director or actor approaching EON and claiming they had an earth shatteringly good concept for a new movie (and it always seemed to amount to a period piece Bond or a young Bond thing. I suspect Amazon will get a bit of this nonsense too).

As for Holland as Bond, I would say stranger actors have been considered, and you’d expect them to weigh it up carefully. I can see them considering him in that detached way, weighing up what benefits and downsides he’d bring. Ultimately though, making the choice to audition and/or cast him is another thing altogether.

Oh absolutely - there have been some strange names that were almost cast and it’s definitely for the best that they didn’t take the part. I can’t help but think of how John Gavin was Bond for a split second before Connery was brought back - that was definitely for the better and it shows that despite some wacky ideas for casting, EON luckily rethought some of those decisions and luckily there hasn’t been a bad Bond actor as a result imo. It remains to be seen if Amazon can resist that urge though - and I’d hate it if the board of the company mandated that a certain actor be used - effectively overriding the filmmakers.

I must admit, it’d be unnecessary, and honestly a bit upsetting if he were to become the next Bond. I have nothing against him and actually like him as Spiderman, but it’d feel like stunt casting, as if he’s muscled his way past better candidates due to his fame. It’s not a good look for Amazon who are clearly trying to position themselves as competent leads of this franchise. I actually think in practice this would be one of the most controversial, if not one of the worst things they could do. I don’t actually think there’s even much desire in practice to see him as Bond.

I’d say there is a bigger desire to see Henry Cavill rather than Tom Holland as Bond - but even then that’s not particularly great casting. I’m just afraid that this means Amazon is only considering A-Listers rather than unknowns who can be molded into the Bond image. It’s going to be very hard to suspend my level of disbelief if someone like Holland, Cavill, or even Idris Elba were cast.

Nah, Holland had a thing with Aston Martin recently. But that wasn’t for Bond. I’ll try to find it.

Edit. Found it. Just google Tom Holland Aston Martin and take a look. It’s not Bond related. Things just got mixed up because of the Variety article.

It won’t be the three wishlist candidates. Dickinson will be filming the four Beatles films with Sam Mendes, Holland is a ridiculous consideration, and the other fella is a two meter Aussie. They just wanted to test the waters on the young Bond thing.

Am I sure? Of course not ;)

That Aston event is specifically what I asked about. I asked if the guy I met was there and met him, and he said no. But that's when he got incredibly nervous. Just saying! You want it to be nothing, but that's not the feeling I got in the room with people who likely know more than you :)

    tomhollandnotbond.com

    do it, now ;)

Just kidding. No, I'd actually still keep my hopes up. I've seen Tom Holland not be Tom Holland, in stuff like The Crowded Room, and he was surprisingly good. I'd rather he wasn't Bond, that's for sure, and you are right, there are people who know far more than I do here, and I was just trying to assure people and try to remain calm about it.

    We'll see ;)

Hey, at least he's got fabulous hair :)

In all honesty, if we'd never heard or seen the guy, and saw him like this, would we be so dismissive?

Even if Holland were an unknown, he's too short for the role.

    It's easy to understand.

    Superman-Bond makes sense, Spider-man-Bond doesn't. ;)
