  • I think it is a fair complaint that as a travelogue it's not the best: you're right that Hashima was a cool and specific idea, but really otherwise the Shanghai and Turkey bits could have been set pretty much anywhere in the world, and we don't real…

  • Yeah that's the thing about SF, it creates a proper emotional response, and that makes it more thrilling and exciting.
  • Yeah, when you mention that the series didn't need saving at that point, I think although QoS was a disappointment there was still enough goodwill from CR being so brilliant that folks were still pumped for another Craig Bond, and Skyfall satisfied …

  • I think Hamilton seemed to have some odd ideas, about women particularly, judging from his 70s efforts. GF was obviously brilliant, but he might be my least favourite Bond director away from that.
  • I guess 50 Shades of Grey was technically fan fiction, and that got made into a movie :D
  • Excellent post, yeah, completely agree. Really great analysis of its themes and story too. It's just one of the most complete movies -not just Bond movies- in the whole run, I'd say, and its massive record-breaking success is perhaps a sign that the…

  • Yeah someone asked recently what the most low point decade the Bonds had, and I went for the 70s because, although I do have affection for those films and there's great moments there, up until '77 you're kind of looking at Bond in decline- the films…

  • That's very nice. I enjoyed Deadly Affair too: the first Smiley movie in all but name.

  • That’s a surprisingly low placement for me, it came in at #1 on my preference revealer. I think it’s utterly superb and does everything I’d want of a Bond: stylish, gripping, exciting, dramatic, charming, funny when it needs to be, with superb perfo…
  • I think the last time anyone tried a big series with two year gaps was Star Wars, and people still haven't stopped moaning about that, so I don't see it happening either.
  • #14 for me. Yeah, it's really good. Slightly lacking in the full lush Bond flavour, and the closest Bond ever came to being a Euston Films production, but full of good stuff and in the car and ski chases it has some of the best action in the whole s…
  • I think likewise Jackman could have been an incredibly popular Bond; likely in a slightly different direction and of course he was already Wolverine by the time they needed a new 007, but I don't doubt in a different universe he was a massive hit in…
  • I guess it's the problem with this thread that any tonal change to the films from NTTD is likely to be so nuanced and slight that it's almost impossible to express on here, and it's likely to come from the specific story being told which we can't re…
  • I'm reading For King and Country at the moment; it's fun, but I'm not getting any sense of the lead character being James Bond. You could replace him with any spy and nothing would change.
  • SIS_HQ wrote: » And I would add something that's a bit overlooked in this discussion: Sanchez's stupidity. Well, I know the Bond villains have their shares of stupidity, but Sanchez, given that he's a drug lord who knows everything around his b…
  • Yes I've nothing against Cavill as a fella, but he's not very good. And I'm not aware that Craig was ever preventing the films from getting produced, indeed all available evidence says otherwise.
  • conradhankers wrote: » M_Blaise wrote: » Pettyfer is known for being awful to work with. They're all drama queens at the end of the day, Craig, Our Henry and even Connery were not the best to suffer fools on set. Christian Bale, DeNiro,…
  • Yeah that's my feeling about it. It would have been fun to see him in action, but I bet it was a bit rubbish.

  • I'm afraid I find Pettyfer a pretty leaden presence. He's odd in that Ministry of Ungentlemanly etc. as he's like a clone of a younger Jude Law, but you realise how good Law is when this clone looks like him but has none of the charm or charisma.
  • I finished the new cartoon and really enjoyed it. Not the best thing ever but it had a bit of bite here and there and I thought it worked well. It took me way too long to get who the psychiatrist was too(!). And even a Bond villain in the cast. One…

  • If only the Bond fans who only liked the first two films or whatever saw it that way :P
