no problem, @barryt007 -- after all, you're the creator of this thread (and, really, a tough one it is!), so maybe YOLT doesn't exist in this thread's reality, lol.

Thanks for creating these threads, my man, they're extremely thoughtful. I'm sure it gives everyone pause before they answer!!! And that would be the ideal for every thread: before answering, give pause...

I too have LALD in last place. I love the film, but am often tempted to fast forward tthrough the pts. It's not interesting at all to me.
I would have preferred if after the gunbarrel we open on Bond in bed with Maddy Smith, the knock on the door though is a villain, an after attack from their mission together. A fight ensues, and after the apartment is trashed from the scrap, M appears in the doorway, frowning from the mess and the half naked Miss Caruso. Fade to titles.
The opening scene is then the agents being killed! We then cut back to M briefing Bond in his apartment!

Intriguing idea. I think their idea at the time was to NOT give the new Bond a special intro like they did for Connery and Lazenby (and would later do for Dalton, Brosnan and Craig) and make it seem like Moore had been Bond all along.

By the mid-to-late Moore years, it was as if they were putting all their energy into the PTSes, sometimes at the expense of the rest of the film.

I’d probably put LALD’s PTS somewhere near the bottom of the series. The idea of three British agents being assassinated isn’t a bad one, but the execution leaves a lot to be desired. I think I have that feeling because I’m not very impressed with the cinematography during these scenes.

On the other hand, I love the PTS’s of TMWTGG and AVTAK. The former benefits from a fine touch of mysteriousness and its use of colours hints at Italian horror alla Mario Bava while the latter intruiges me as ‘a mission on the other side of the Iron Curtain’.

I'm surprised TSWLM and MR aren't higher. Rick Sylvester anyone?

    I feel that about Mendes...

...and the opposite about the Glen Moore films
FYEO - St Georges sinking, Citroen chase, underwater scene, ski chase, climb at monastery, any Columbo scene
OP - Auction, 009 death, Tuk Tuk, train fight, circus scene, fight at monsoon palace, fight on top of plane, car chase, backgammon scene, love or hate jungle sequence
AVTAK - Ok this film is tired all the way through.

I love this! The idea that the late, great Richard Burton went to see King Connery in such a daft (yet incredibly funny) James Bond film!

    GF
    TB

    TSWLM

    MR
    OP
    FRWL

    DAF
    FYEO
    AVTAK
    YOLT
    TMWTGG
    LALD

Quite a lot of them to rank. I think TB is my favourite with that incredible soundtrack, the great fisticuffs, the iconic jetpack and the even more iconic DB5. That being said TMWTGG is heavily underrated in my book. The whole manhunt in the funhouse is suitably eerie.

    1. TB
    2. TMWTGG
    3. FRWL
    4. OP
    5. GF
    6. AVTAK
    7. FYEO
    8. TSWLM
    9. MR
    10. YOLT
    11. DAF
    12. LALD

I think LALD is my least favourite of the series. Luckily the rest of the film is a blast from that great M scene onwards.

If just between these alone I'd probably go something like this:

    GF
    TB
    FRWL
    TSWLM
    YOLT
    MR
    LALD
    TMWTGG
    FYEO
    AVTAK
    OP
    DAF

I adore all of them and like that Mankiewicz tried to liven them up some with humor and to not be the same thing over and over. But DAF has the least dramatic stakes and the fight staging in the mud room is the worst in the entire original series. It was so much of a OH MY GOD HE'S BACK bit and the best parts are the dark humor.

    AVTAK
    LALD
    FRWL

    YOLT
    FYEO

I may have to edit this with comments after more thought!

Yeah, God forbid you include NSNA, something might happen, like the heavens fall or something. Anyway... Ranking them from best to worst:

    GF
    FRWL
    NSNA
    TSWLM
    FYEO
    TB
    MR
    OP
    AVTAK
    DAF
    YOLT
TMWTGG - why does Scaramanga have life-sized mannequins of Bond? Who made them?
LALD - Its not bad, just unspectacular

Often, Moore's PTS would be better than the main movie itself. TSWLM (I know what you're thinking, but minus points for Moore's unconvincing close-ups), MR (minus points for the pointless Jaws appearence) and OP (minus points for the horse's arse) in particular are rather exciting affairs, whereas the main body is often dull or uninspired. TMWTGG and LALD also don't feature Bond at all, which automatically brings them down for me. And while both FRWL and NSNA are high for me because of the fake promise of Bond dying, YOLT falls spectacularly later because Gilbert shot the scene rather flatly and Connery is mentally not there to begin with. It should be shocking, but oddly feels telegraphed in advanced. This would never have happened with Young and Connery just two years before then. And GF... well, its the ultimate PTS, isn't it?

DAF is odd. The PTS would've been fine if Blofeld died right there and then. Instead, the rest of the film follows, and it completely diminishes the PTS and also the writing itself makes it impossible as well to settle the film as a sequel to OHMSS, which it definitely isn't. So, it has fall in the latter category.

And I would've probably placed FYEO higher, if Moore's Bond hadn't been so glib about Blofeld's demise. I'm fine with the scene as is, but to make Blofeld such a complete joke was just a tad much. Didn't have to be super dramatic either, but... Still love it, though.
