Yes, we need to see this. It was a big mistake to delete this, as it would have provided more closure to that side of Quantum, especially now considering that Skyfall seems to have pulled a Goldfinger and forgotten about Quantum.

Can anyone recall when the whole collection of James Bond films including QOS was released? The standard DVD's that is, not Blue Ray. It's just that I'm still yet to own the whole collection on DVD (don't ask me why, probably because I travel around the globe a bit) and I'm thinking of either purchasing them now or waiting for the set to be released again to include Skyfall. How long after QOS was the entire collection released including this film? I suppose it could be atleast 6 months after Skyfall is released. It would be quite a long wait. Don't know whether I should wait this long or not. I could always buy Skyfall separately ofcourse but I was kind of hoping they would make the packaging better but then again, this might not happen.

Does anyone know when MGM will be releasing a Vol. 4 and Vol. 5 of Bond movies on Blu-Ray? There's only a small selection right now, and the majority aren't great. We get choices of Die Another Day, For Your Eyes Only, Live And Let Die, Moonraker (and more), and they aren't the greatest of the greats. I was hoping we'd have more out for the Christmas season, but I've heard nothing yet.

I'm dying to have OHMSS, TSWLM and GoldenEye on Blu-Ray. They're great movies.

Does anyone have any info/predictions on when we might be seeing them?

No volume 4 and 5 of that edition will be released - MGM is starting a new edition, re-releasing the already available Blu-Ray films and the yet-to-be-released one... so yes the current blu-ray edition will remain unfinished.

  • Is there any word on these BDs yet? It's nearly 2012 and I can't seem to find any release info. I was guessing they would spread them across the year?

Also - do the existing Blu Rays feature the same extras content as the SE or UE DVDs...or is it different again?

The plan was always to launch them in Q4 2012. So anytime from September. It would be nice to have an announcement, mind.

It's the same as the UE DVDs, which is just more than the SE DVDs to begin with. Nothing's missing, in fact, there's never been more extras!

It could be as late as December 2013, just because of making it available just in time for Chrostmas that year.

Every film will be released so no need to worry.

I heard there was a London street chase that was actually filmed?!? It would be great to see this footage on a new release as bonuse material.

It's lost sadly and no longer exists but stills do survive. If you can hunt for them, they're well worth looking at.

I think any special edition of QOS was being held onto until the next Bond film, which should've come out a while ago had it not been for legal troubles. I, too, would like to see the alternate ending and hear commentary! Judging by the Casino Royale trailers, there are still some scenes from that we haven't seen as well-Le Chiffre ripping the card, Bond and Vesper in the ocean, etc.

If that does end up being the date then that's too far away. Thanks. Actually, what concerns me more is whether for the 50th Anniversary they will re-release all 22 films (up to QOS) on standard DVD. If this happens they might have better packaging in which case I will wait for the newer version. Who knows when we'll find out though.

Does anyone know if the version of Casino Royale in this collection: http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B00307RT86/ref=ox_sc_act_title_2?ie=UTF8&m=A3P5ROKL5A1OLE
    includes the deleted scenes?

I am not as keen on Blue Ray partly because I think standard DVD's look pretty good anyway (I think the general public feels the same as Blue Ray isn't that popular I read) plus they are so clear and sharp that they make the film look a little fake and as a consequence they lose that theatrical quality. I haven't seen any Blue Ray Bond films though. Also, I could buy a blue ray player but my laptop doesn't play blue ray and I'm not going to go out and buy a new laptop just for this. I'm more than happy with my Vaio.

I will say that dvd looks way better played via a blu-ray player on a hi-def tv, that it does played on a regular dvd player on a regular TV. The blu-ray hi-def is worth getting not only for the blu- ray display but also the improved dvd look. This is because the blu-ray player upscales the dvd data ( whatever that means).
The 13 blu-ray Bonds plus NSNA blu-ray, btw can all be had very cheap. You can get them anywhere for $10.00 each. Even cheaper some places.

I think the decision on whether to go blu-ray or not, is more about whether to invest in the 1080p hi-def TV. Once that decision is made, tossing in a blu-ray machine is a no-brainer because the machines are cheap, and they also play all your dvds too.

Thanks. I don't know what to do. It's just that sometimes if I am away from home I like to watch the odd DVD on my laptop which doesn't play blue ray. I'm wondering if I should just buy that standard DVD Bond collection now. If they look even better on a Blue Ray player then that’s a plus. I like the photos on the packets but I don't like how the black and white part at the top and bottom take up all that room. Still, it's just packaging...LOL

Next year around Skyfall's release all the films will be released on DVD again as well as Blu-ray. This could well include packaging with a 50th anniversary theme so Skyfall will fit in when it comes out. Wait for that one, I would. If you've survived this long you can wait for the time left, just under a year.

So, let me get this straight - you think Blu-Rays "look fake", but you haven't actually seen one?

I'll tell you one thing: The Lowry 4K remasters on 1080p Blu-Ray look far, far superior than the DVD's. Actually most Blu-Rays do.

    But you probably won't notice this on a 32" TV-set or your laptop! Get a projector or a well-calibrated 1080p 50" flatscreen.

So timmer, you're saying invest in the 1080p as opposed to the 720 if buying the Blu-Rays? I've got the blu-ray player, now just looking for a tv on a budget (but willing to shell out the cash for the BOND blu-rays). It sounds like though, the Bond DVD's still are sufficient played through this, no?

@JBFan626 @Zekidk knows the tech better than I do, but yes I would hold out for 1080p. That's the retail hi-def standard. Better resolution I guess.
Again the big investment is really how much do you want to spend on the TV. Both the Bond blu-ray and ultimate-edition dvds are quite cheap.
I've got a one year old LED 40 " Toshiba. Everything looks great, both dvd and blu-ray.
But if I could do it over, I'd go for minimum 50 " . Bigger is best.
Next purchase will be a really big screen. Although 40" does fill any normal size room nicely and you can get really good prices on 40" 1080p now. That's probably the best value now. You start paying more as the screen size increases.

Viewing tip. Make sure the colour is calibrated if that's the right word. I had to fiddle with my colour settings which was a real nuisance, but I eventually got them right where I wanted them. Would have been handy if someone that actually knew what they were doing set the colour though.
Viewing tip 2 re. picture-size options. Watch all movies on full-screen option, while TV dvd/blu-ray, or actual live-tv seems to display truer in theatre wide-one. The theatre wide-one option will clip graphics when watching sports, but I think the action displays better than on full-screen. Full-screen though will give you an unclipped graphics display, if you value all the top-of-screen and bottom-of-screen graphics info that clutters up the screen when watching sports.

No problem with the TV but I want to watch them on my laptop too.

I've seen Blue Ray films but NOT James Bond on Blue Ray.

Oh cool, thanks for that. I'll wait then.

But if you just want to watch on your laptop. Pick up the ultimate editions cheap wherever you can find them. buy that boxset you were talking about. Its bound to be cheaper than the freshly packaged releases of next year.
Go blu-ray when you're ready to park yourself in front of your living room hi-def 1080p 40" or better.
  • edited December 2011 Posts: 2,594
Hmm, you do have a point. Do you think the new 50th Anniversary collection could be twice the price of the box set I've been talking about (see link above)? That box set is only 48.99 quid. Not much at all really. I could get the blue rays in a couple of years time. Being a huge Bond fan it wouldn't hurt to have two box sets I don't suppose. :) Well, the price isn't the issue but why pay possibly quite a bit more for standard 50th Anniversary DVD's that'll mostly just have different packaging? But then great packaging would be rather nice if indeed they do achieve this... I don't watch alot of the special features. Even if I was a billionaire I'd still buy sensibly even with things like this. I could wait to see how much the new edition actually costs but I'm afraid when that comes out the older edition may no longer be available or the cost will go up. Do you think this is possible? I'm hopeless when it comes to shopping. I um and ah forever. LOL.

I don't think the older edition will go up at all. Maybe wait to see what the price and packaging of the next set is like and then make a decision. Hopefully that will be announced soon.

Yeah I'm thinking I might do this. I hope the announcement accompanied with photos isn't far off.

But then again, the 2000 SE's that are discontinued are going for around $30--and that's just a Special Edition DVD, not sure why that is. So maybe it's not a bad idea to pick up the current UE versions.

Yep the SE's might be veering into collectables territory, but the UE's are still cheap. Once you have the UE's, you are all set. You can buy the blu-rays at your leisure, as the UE's display quite nicely on the hi-def TV with blu-ray player, or with regular dvd/tv set-up.
Personally I don't care about the next round of dvd releases. All I want is to get my paws on the remaining 9 blu-rays, but I will wait for them to come down in price. I have budgeted $90.00 plus tax to buy all 9 ( $10.00 each) I will wait for this price, as there is no urgency. I have the SE edition back-ups.

btw Casino Royale (1967) will be released on blu-ray Feb. 7 2012. At least in Canada. Opening price is $14.99. Not bad.

Special Edition and Ultimate Edition. The two versions of the Bond DVD releases. The Ultimate Editions have remastered film prints and more special features.

These are the cheapest full set I've seen.

Yes but they only come with the first disc, so just the films and no extras. They're on disc 2, so you know the two disc-set for that.
  • edited December 2011 Posts: 4,622
The UE's are a much better picture, especially with the pre-GE films. The prints were all nicely cleaned-up with tender loving care by some company, around 2006, although the SE's are quite watchable but I really noticed the difference with the UE's on the older films. My dvd collection is SE, as that's what came out first.Later I cherry picked a few UE's from bargain bins.

A View To A Kill and GoldenEye are cropped though as well as A View To A Kill's deliberately shakey shot being cleaned up! Some bad errors were made by Lowry Digital.
