    I agree Young is the best.

    I recently rewatched Bullitt with Steve McQueen (a stylish classic). I beleive Peter Yates (the Director) would have been well suited to direct Bond back in the 60's......Gilbert could have been avoided!

    I can't imagine the franchise without Gilbert. The guy knows how to make absolutely entertaining movies, with the most epic scale and grand scope you could imagine. MR is the most lush and gorgeous film to look at, and IMO if the every cent of the budget for SP is seen on screen, MR will still look like it cost 5 times more.

    James Cameron spent a huge load of money for his 'Avatar' film, yet MR made 30 years prior still looks more lush and epic than that film.

    I think we all wish that all the films were just like our favourites, and that they were all directed by our favourite directors.

    But it's the sheer diversity of the series that actually keeps it fresh.

    You look at the films made every 10 years or so - in 1969, 1979, 1989, 1999, 2008.
    1969 - a tale of love and loss
    1979 - a tale of world domination
    1989 - a tale of revenge
    1999 - a tale of...hang on...love and loss
    2008 - a tale of revenge...oh, hmm.

    OK, so ideas crop up again and again, but the style of the films changes and evolves. And that is the most important thing for longevity.

    I don't think I've seen any of his other work, but I agree with your point. I was just writing about their experiences with Bond films.

    I don't disagree with any of your points. However, Gilbert doesn't have any restraint.....Jaws becoming good, falling in love after the cable car chase, Bond in Cowboy outfit with the Mag Seven theme tune blaring......he tried to go for the laugh over everything. On the other hand Directors such as Young, Hunt and Campbell can make a taut spy thriller with an injection of British humour. YOLT & TSWLM are both good Bond films, but MR shows Gilberts ignorance of the previous 'tone' of the Bond films (and I don't know why Cubby agreed?). MR would be a much better film with a bit of editing (and the creation of a more serious tone.

    It does seem to be the case that many of the popular films post 60s have their fair share of detractors. There are people I know of who don't like TSWLM for instance...and we know the criticism films like GE and SF receive so...yes...Spectre will probably be the same.

    If I'm being specific with where I think SPECTRE will land in my rankings, it's doubtful that it will crack the top 4. Goldeneye has long been a favorite of mine at number 5, but I've gotten to the point where I can see it falling out of that position. Looking down my rankings, I have Quantum Of Solace at 10. On my last view, it seems very vulnerable to stay within my top 10. The questions I ask myself when I take into account everything that has been officially released on SPECTRE are:

    Is the potential there for a classic Bond? Absolutely. I'll go as far to say that and claim it's not just speculation. Mendes has a track record with Bond now as putting focus on characterization. The cast is outstanding to assume the roles of those characters. The one quality that will tip the scales either way is the script, which has been described in the media to be very fine to being in such dire need of revision Craig personally worked on it uncredited.

    Which leads to the next question, can it be worse than Quantum Of Solace? I can't really answer yes to this question without speculating on elements of the final product. In my opinion, the only way it can be worse is if the film is a parody of itself with the facade of pretending to be another serious outing we have come accustom to in the Craig era.

    Those factors would indicate a likely placement between 5 and 10 to me, but obviously there are so many other markers that will sway me either way. The locations and cinematography look beautiful in the glimpses we have seen. The soundtrack is a big question mark, but Newman has the talent to do the job proper. While the tone looks heady and serious again, there's no assurance the whole picture will play that way. The biggest criticism of many Bond films is that they drift from their identity and try to be something they are not. That will be the ultimate determining factor of its placement for me.

    Naturally, it would need to do a lot right to break into my top 4 and a lot wrong to end up in the middle or bottom.

    Good analysis Mansfield, and I think Spectre will place between 5-10 in my rankings. GE still starting to slip from 5th and SP may take that or 6th

    I've always assumed some of that (Jaws falling in love, etc) was more of a producer/writer decision. I'm not sure how much control the producers exerted at that time in franchise history, but it seems that that would fall more on the writers or the producers than Gilbert. I like what he did with MR. Given the script (Bond goes to space, as well as every other silly/OTT element in the film) there's no way he could have made a film with a more "serious tone." It would have been a ridiculous embarrassment (although, as I'm well aware, some still consider it one regardless). Going for a light, humorous tone and emphasizing the larger than life elements is really the only thing he could have done, and I think he (along with his lead actor) did a fantastic job of that, regardless of your opinion on the final film as a whole.

    I love Gilbert as a Bond director. His sense of flair, grandeur, and pure blockbuster entertainment value has yet to be matched.

    I thought I would do a list based on the critics percentage score on Rotten Tomatoes, it makes an interesting list, if the score was the same I took the better audience score to determine its place in the ranking. This isn't my list its just something I thought I would do.
