How do you pronounce Vesper?

edited August 2014 in General Discussion Posts: 22
I've been trying to figure out the right way to pronounce Vesper for a long time. In Casino Royale when Bond meets Vesper on the train and when later when he's naming the martini it sure sounds like ves-pu. She's apparently named after the Latin word meaning evening, vesper, but that seems to be pronounced like it's spelled, ves-per.

Is it Daniel Craig's accent in the film? In my quick search I could only find those two times when her name is said in the film, are there any others? Edit: Bond also says what sounds like ves-pu when he's waking up in the hospital.

So which is it? How do you say it?

I'm torn, on one hand by looking up the word and what you guys are saying ves-per totally seems right. By looking at a script, it looks like Vesper's name is only said four times (all by Daniel Craig). To me, all of those times it sounds like ves-pu (like the a Vespa scooter).

At the 58:20, 1:43:32, 1:54:15 and 1:54:19 marks in Casino Royale it sounds like Daniel Craig pronounces Vesper like this pronunciation of Vespa.

Does it sound like that to anyone else? Is he saying it "incorrectly" due to an accent?

You are catching a British accent more than me, one that does not pronounce the "er" but says "uh" instead.

I am still chuckling that there is a separate thread on this. It could go in the James Bond Questions thread, surely. :)

Sorry about that. I'm new to the forum and I saw that thread just after this one had got a few replies.

It's no big deal, believe me. You had a perfectly good question and getting used to finding the existing threads takes practice.

Mr. White killed Ms. Green in Venice with the sinking building. Clue connections as well.

Except that Bond caused the building to sink, and she killed herself.
