James Bond Soundtrack Cues - Part Two (1995 - Present)

edited August 21 in Music Posts: 134
Here's my attempt to chronicle every musical cue used in an official James Bond film.

I've seen posts on various forums about individual scores, but as far as I'm aware, there isn't a thread with every soundtrack in the order the music appears in the movie.

Please feel free to post below if you spot any mistakes or omissions.

I'd love to be in a position to have a definitive list for each film, including source music, omitted and alternate cues, different versions of the theme song, rejected theme songs etc. etc.

An asterisk denotes a track or cue not commercially available. I haven't included the Nic Raine re-orchestrations, focussing just on original source material from the film. I have made up many of the titles of the missing cues; they are not 'official' designations, unless stated otherwise. Where tracks have been edited together on the OST, their titles are in brackets. I have noted slate numbers when I have them (John Barry was notorious for not naming his cues).

This thread covers Goldeneye to the present day. This thread covers Dr. No to Licence To Kill.

Notes:
Time has been kinder to Eric Serra’s score, after it was initially savaged by fans and critics for marking such a radical departure from Bond musical tradition. Notable cues omitted from the OST include the opening gun barrel and dam sequence, Bond and Natalya’s escape from the Tiger helicopter and much of the music from the film’s climax (‘The Cradle’ for instance is similar to ‘Run, Shoot & Jump’ but with more strings). The main title by Tina Turner is a bespoke edit, which differs from the ‘single edit’ issued to radio stations at the time in the bridge between verses. Quite a few of the cues were rightfully omitted from the OST, as they’re essentially just low level synthesisers and ambient noise (‘Set Target, Severnaya’, ‘Target Is London’.) Sadly the John Altman arrangement of ‘A Pleasant Drive In St. Petersburg’ has also never seen the light of day, after Serra’s version was dropped from the film by producers (but still made it on to the OST).

There are some misnomers in the soundtrack titles: ‘We Share The Same Passions (Part I: The Trip To Cuba)’ plays when Bond meets Xenia in the casino and not when he travels to Cuba with Natalya (although it is a similar sounding cue). Similarly, ‘The Scale To Hell - Part I: Boris And The Lethal Pen’ isn’t used when Boris is holding the pen grenade, but rather when Natalya visits the IBM store, although it is truncated.

‘Natalya Introduces Herself To Bond’ is very similar to ‘The Severnaya Suite (Part I: Among The Dead)’, but with a quicker tempo and new solo violin melody. ‘Fatal Weakness (Film Version)’ is a truncated version of the album version and ‘Spiking Boris’* (1.58) uses part of the same cue, but without the dramatic ending of the OST. The film version of ‘Boris And The Lethal Pen’ has a crescendo with synth strings at the end of the cue.

Notes:

This, so far in my research, appears to be the most incomplete soundtrack, with nearly an hour and twenty minutes of missing music. Quite a few of the cues have been truncated for the OST, presumably for a better listening experience. I was fortunate enough to be given some help with this soundtrack, so can vouch that the majority of cues listed are Thomas Newman’s titles. Interestingly, the car chase around Rome was scored as three separate cues, mixed together in the edit and presented as one on the OST (‘Backfire’). Confusingly ’Tempus Fugit’ on the OST does not tally with the music we hear when Bond’s watch explodes incapacitating Blofeld; it’s closer to the cue heard in the start of the film when Bond is in the helicopter (‘Helicopter Fight’), but that cue has the Bond theme flourish at the end which segues into Sam Smith’s main title theme. ‘Escape From Compound’, as noted from Newman’s notes, replaced the ‘Tempus Fugit’ cue. The film version of ‘Madeleine’ also differs from the OST, in that it’s interspersed with the scene with M, Q and Moneypenny in the restaurant and it ends on a difference cadence, as Hinx rapidly approaches them on the train. I’ve heard alternate versions of ‘Helicopter Fight’ and ‘Cuckoo’, so have listed them here as bonus material.

As is well documented, a lot of Newman’s cues borrow liberally from his previous score for Skyfall; ‘Building Down’ from ‘Quartermaster’, ‘Helicopter Chase’ from ‘Grand Bazaar, Istanbul’, ‘Eve - Bodyguard’ from ‘Close Shave’, ‘M’s Message’ from ‘Voluntary Retirement’, ‘The Eternal City’ from ‘Brave New World’, ‘9 Eyes Meeting’ from ‘Someone Usually Dies’, ‘Careless’ from ‘The Moors’ and I’m sure there are some more I’m probably forgetting. There are subtle structural or instrumental changes in each of these instances, but nothing major. I believe the only cue Newman copies without any changes is the one I’ve titled ‘Back To Q’s Lab & The James Bond Theme’, which also appears at the end of Skyfall when it’s revealed that Mallory is the new M. The end of this cue is of course David Arnold’s version of the Bond theme from the end of Casino Royale, ‘The Name’s Bond…James Bond’.

One thing that amused me is the version of ‘New York, New York’ (as heard in 009’s car) is by cheesy X Factor crooner Ray Quinn. Evidently the producers didn’t want to spend money on licensing the Frank Sinatra version (perhaps there’s still bad blood from him turning down ‘Moonraker’ ;) ).

Notes:

Last year (2024) an unofficial double CD emerged of No Time To Die filling in much of the missing music from 2021’s OST. However, it was still missing the film versions of the ‘Gun Barrel’ (with its sustained ending); ‘Explosion To Hotel (Message From An Old Friend)’ (which differs notably in structure in the film version, featuring a siren overlay when Bond is on the bridge, as well as dialled down electronics at the start); the Main Title version of ’No Time To Die’ (with its cleaner ending); the cue when Felix dies (the film version has additional strings playing a descending melodic line); and ‘Back To Norway’ (which removes Billie Eilish’s vocal completely). Some alternate versions of tracks later emerged on another unofficial CD, ostensibly from the ‘recording sessions’, so they are listed here as bonus content.

    Very impressive :)
But one thing struck me as odd, for GE there's a track titled "Bond Arrives in Moscow", but Bond never goes there in GE (or any other Bond film so far), it's supposed to be St. Petersburg.

We Share the Same Passions part one (The Trip to Cuba) has a harp glissando at 0:26. Part two (The Same Passions) has no such glissando at the same relative moment (1:56).

In the film, the version of the theme with the harp glissando is heard in the Cuba scene, whereas the version without the glissando is heard when Bond arrives at the Monaco casino. This suggests to me the tracks are named correctly in the album. Can you check it again?

There is the glissando, right at the start:
