It’s free to view on YouTube. It’s definitely not an “essential” viewing but it’s an interesting watch nonetheless.
But as far as the game goes, I shall be submitting my list to you as soon as possible @GoldenGun!
@goldenswissroyale and @007HallY, I understand your feelings and respect them 100% :)
As I see there are members interested in a film-by-film performance ranking, I'll do that one after this one, it'll be interesting to compare the two.
In the meantime, keep those rankings coming :)
If anyone is still interested in participating who hasn't submitted a list, they are of course most welcome to do so.
I will start counting the results this Saturday, which means the submission deadline is this Friday at midnight CET.
1st place: 10 pts
2nd: 8 pts
3rd: 7 pts
4th: 6 pts
5th: 5 pts
6th: 4 pts
7th: 3 pts
8th / last: 1 pt
I'll be very interested in doing a film by film performance ranking, old boy.
We'll do that next, this one won't take long ;)
Tomorrow I'll start with the bottom finish, lads :)
Looking forward to it!
I would find a film by film quite difficult, especially with Moore and Connery! And I think (obviously, in my case!!) Dalton is brilliant in both of his movies, so couldn't put one over the other!
BARRY NELSON
James 'Jimmy' Bond in
Climax: Casino Royale (1954)
Unsurprisingly one of the two non-EON Bonds finishes last in our little game. Practically everyone, 13 out of 15 participants, ranked him last.
One member ranked him penultimate. And one member, in the single most leftfield list I have ever received for any of these games, ranked him 2nd.
In total Barry Nelson received 24 points.
Shocking. Positively shocking.
But let's face it, he didn't play Bond, now did he? So this was easy enough. :-)
On a sidenote, I also think Michael Pate was excellent as Leiter and that he would have fit the Bond character better than Nelson.
I was about to say the very same thing!
DAVID NIVEN
as Sir James Bond in
Casino Royale (1967)
Also not much of a surprise, given his exclusively non-EON appearance.
An accomplished actor outside the world of 007, he is one of only two actors on our list who has won an Academy Award (the other of course being Sean Connery), his Bond was the first of only two who dies on screen (the other being Daniel Craig's in NTTD), he is the only one on this list who gets a mention in one of Ian Fleming's novels, he's also the only candidate here who did not get first-billing as James Bond (Peter Sellers did as Evelyn Tremble) instead being billed third, and he is the only Bond who has a moustache.
Now, Mr. Niven received only one bottom finish, though he did end up penultimate in ten other lists. Four members though ranked him above at least one EON Bond. Three of those were 6th places, and one of those was a surprising 3rd place finish.
In total David Niven collected 50 points, more than doubling the tally of Nelson.
I also think he is one of the highlights of CR67, a film that I actually really like (despite its many many shortcomings), bringing a dignified retired James Bond to the table that I, in all honesty, enjoy more than my least favourite EON 007.
As such, Niv came in 6th for me.
I quite agree. It would be interesting to see Niven cast as Bond as a younger man in a "serious" Bond film. I think he would do an admirable job.
If he could lose the moustache, absolutely!
His autobiographies are fantastic fun if you ever fancy reading them, really interesting stuff.
He's also probably the toughest guy to have ever played Bond, and closest to the fictional spy in some ways, in that he joined the military in the early 30s and served in the Commandos in WW2.
Ah, you couldn't have David Niven without his moustache..Just wouldn't be him! 😁
