I'm pretty sure that's more due to O'Russell being an abusive lunatic rather than his career naturally fizzing out. Although it always amazes me he's still working.
Didn’t George Clooney punch Russell on the set of Three Kings as he was being abusive to a crew member?
Yes. That's amongst many issues he's had with others throughout his career (and even personal life).
I agree, I feel there are great directors who are popular at this moment in time, and they always go to the height of the bond director wish list, and there are equally talented directors who for whatever reason are not as popular a name, and they are not really considered and I wish that wasn't the case.
When did EON hire a director because of his popularity? Even Sam Mendes was not at his best.
Maybe Lewis Gilbert after Alfie.
Yeah I'd have liked him at the time he wanted to i.e. late 70s/early 80s, but not now, and I can't believe he would be interested anyway.
Apparently Cubby was against ever hiring Spielberg to direct a Bond film. I suppose that there's the danger that it would end up being a Spielberg film as opposed to a Bond film. The director of a Bond film should never really be bigger or more showy than the material itself. That's also why the idea of Tarantino as the director of Casino Royale didn't fly either.
I guess we're off topic! :D
I said that a few weeks ago. They're getting Villeneuve at his peak, which is highly unusual for Bond. This gives me hope.
Spielberg is not at his peak, and I find his current films labored and sentimental. I think his last great ones were around Catch Me If You Can and Schindler's List. Even Scorsese seems to be repeating himself now.
Let's be honest. Eon was pretty cheap with salaries, especially under Cubby and Harry. You don't pay a lot for Adolfo Celi and Rick Van Nutter, and they didn't want to pay for Spielberg in the '80s.
I'm not saying its the sole reason, but it certainly plays a big role. He's a Nolan disciple, somebody who makes commercial films but feel artful at the same time.
Nolan is the biggest "name" director working today besides Spielberg, Scorsese or Tarantino. Villeneuve is talked about as being in a similar league as them.
In some ways, I don't feel he's the right choice to helm Bond 26. But he's a popular director at this time, and I believe that played a big role in him getting the gig.
Whoops 🤭 hehe well my bad @peter
After setting Denis Villeneuve to direct the next James Bond movie, Amazon MGM Studios has a writer in its sights to pen the next installment in the 007 franchise. Sources tell Deadline that Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight has been set to write the pic.
Amy Pascal and David Heyman are producing via Pascal Pictures and Heyday Films, respectively. Tanya Lapointe will executive produce.
This is shaping up to be a pretty impressive line-up, fingers crossed they all last the distance.
Whoa!! Seriously impressed. The producers were excellent picks. Villeneuve was a fantastic choice. And now Knight?!! Combined? Winning combination. Now I'm officially excited. Unbelievable...
Yeah this is shaping up to be a pretty exciting film so far isn't it?
Fun fact: as well as creating exciting vibrant stuff like SAS Rogue Heroes and Peaky Blinders, Knight is also one of the creators of Who Wants To Be A Millionaire :D
I see, as befitting the thread title, this is fully official news as well:
They are making smart choices.
Same! So much the same! The studio seems to be going for it in getting, not only talented craftsmen, but creatives with vision and perspective and personality. All that Big Tech money is being put to good use. And news this good raises my hope that they’ll get the selection of our seventh James Bond right. While we won’t know how it turns out until it turns out, the progression on Bond 26, thus far, has been a near 180 degree turnaround in how people talk about the future of Bond. It feels as if we’re seeing a new day’s sunrise rather than the quick progression from High Noon to sunset. Of course, this lifting of spirits is helped by the positive, initial reaction to First Light.
I think it’ll be a film which gives us a few surprises whatever way. Frankly James Bond can and should take some creative risks that feel right for a new iteration of the character.
On a different note I actually think these choices of key creatives are, superficially anyway, very good and I think much better than if they’d just hired someone like Christopher Nolan to write/direct. I just caught up with an old friend about this fresh lot of James Bond news and he was basically like: ‘a new Bond film directed by the guy that did Dune, produced by the people that did Harry Potter, the new Spider-Mans (and of course oversaw the Craig Bond movies)… oh, and the guy that created Peaky Blinders is writing? Sounds kinda awesome’. It’s a weird line up of talent but it’s encouraging.
Looking forward to the reporting about the film pre- and post-release how this headline team is going to work together. Basically, we've now got five (executive) producers on board with Pascal, Heyman, Villeneuve, LaPointe and Knight, plus they probably get a text from Barbara Broccoli now and again. And whoever the actor will be, might want to give input, too (although that seems less likely with the stacked staff as is).
Should be clear who's running the show in which areas there, but they all have extensive experience in basically all areas of shooting high-level stuff in the UK and with British actors. So you'd think they'd all be interested in chiming in with ideas on story, locations and actors.
So far, I thought the idea that Villeneuve would pull from his stable of actors is a bit overdone, because he doesn't even really have that many go to guys (apart from maybe Brolin and Dastmalchian). With Knight, I feel like there is a bit more of a "he'll write a role specifically for Tom Hardy"...
And funny enough i sugest Steven Knight in November 2013... Also as directer. When Denise was hired as directer discus that mabey wil take Dop of Pawn Sacrifice (2014) who is written by Steven Knight.
He wrote movies directed by directers who remourd or asked to direct Bond movie and also wrote movie for Michael Apted. He wrote four movie's (Eastern Promises, Closed Circuit, The Hundred-Foot Journey, Allied) that i already have in my collection.
Mabey the focus be on Serenity, Allied, Pawn Sacrifice.
Closed Circuit get 6/10 from me. Possible directer or the independent studio (= les known/cheaper studio and producer) is problem in this case. It is nice that MGM and Eon and Sony give QOS a change and like said before i see a bit of QOS in Venom 2. Possible thanks to Andy Serkis too.
My moost worried is stil Amazon/American part and in connection with Warner. Not complete trust Sony (Amy Pascal). Also a bit about casting for same reason as iam worried about Amazon. I always liked that we get unknown/less known people, serious and silly-fantasy elements in plot or chooses. Of course we have David Heyman, but stil be afraid he wil be overruled, see the fact that so far Harry Potter spinoff Fantastic Beast 4&5 are canceld where he include lost it a bit. Stil hope he and some other chooses be last wish of Barbara and Michael.
Daniel Craig has elements/symbol that Harry Potter have too and Denise made movies / talking about with elements that Daniel Craig have too made me excited.
Big Wolf in QOS
There talking about that Sicario is about Rats (SF inspecialy), whyle Prisoners are Cat and Mouse (Spectre inspecialy).
The symbol of Daniel Craig era is at same time a weakness too, but also Die Another Day i only have seen 5-6 times. See a movie a lot of times, stil enjoying and have fun is stil inportent too. My cinema view of Casino Royale and Skyfall was not really good. Subtil and humor are very inportent.
