It’s a film that’s very consciously setting up things to come in this new DCU era. I think for a portion of viewers how well it works depends on how invested you are in that (I know people who were expecting more of a standalone Superman film and found this one a bit odd in that way). I can definitely understand that point about this movie feeling like a tv pilot that’ll be developed as things continue. It’s not a film I’ll revisit soon, but further down the line. Not sure what’s coming with these DC films, but it might be a bit of a Marvel situation for me - unfortunately there are going to be a few of these films I have no interest in and won’t go out of my way to watch.
Anyway, one thing I’ve noticed about this film is its success and hype seem to be much more apparent in the US (so domestically) than elsewhere. Maybe Superman isn’t quite as big as, say, Batman on a larger scale, but in my personal expirience this film doesn’t seem quite as big a deal here (the UK that is). I know some people who’ve seen it, but not as many as I noticed with previous film releases the last few years, and I’ve found it hasn’t quite drawn that same level of excitement compared to, say, Top Gun 2, Barbenheimer, Deadpool vs Wolverine, or The Batman. It’s actually surprised me. Maybe that’s not everyone’s experience though so don’t know how off I am with that assessment.
Hmm, it’s tricky to say at the moment how a Supergirl or Clayface film will turn out here… quite odd choices to follow up Superman with in many ways. In other ways I guess it makes sense as financially and creatively the bar isn’t as high with those. Make really good films out of them that gets viewers interested and that’s a positive. I guess they don’t want to put up a new Batman in the same year as Pattinson’s follow up as well (which I’m really looking forward to, and I suspect they’ll be keen to get that one out).
I also realize I am no longer the key demo that these films are marketed to. I was pleased that my son felt the same as me. LOL! I didn't hate the film, I don't think the film sucks. I was disappointed in it, I was expecting a better movie than what I saw.
I didn't know that Supergirl and Clayface are next up. Not being familiar with the comics I was taken aback to see a drunk, blunt talking Supergirl. The teaser photo for the film indicates that this tone will continue. I am curious what the story is with her and whether her cousin will show up. Clayface is an interesting villain, can I see a whole film about him? I only remember him in the animated series and while it had a good back story I am not sure a whole film can work.
This is definitely not a Superman that’s gonna be pushing the moon off its axis.
Flying into the sun is not much of a stretch, though this Superman is clearly depowered.
@thedove it did cross my mind leaving the cinema is Gunn a bad fit for Superman, and questioned whether DC has made a huge mistake, time will tell I will remain open minded for now.
However, I can agree that Gunn’s actually more suitable doing anti-heroes like THE SUICIDE SQUAD and PEACEMAKER. I look forward to S2 next month. I love how he’s able to take such obscure characters like Polkadot Man and make a memorable character.
Corenswet was very good can't argue with that, there were still element of a more naive Superman more like a year 1 then a year 3. Comparing Superman 2025 to MoS overall MoS is better for me.
I often defended the Snyder films saying they are elseworlds so I have to apply that to Gunn's films also, its a different take.
“Are you effin’ stupid?!”
“I grew up in Kansas, General.”
Gunn = Punk Rock
Snyder = Heavy Metal
Prog and Metal my favorite genres in music.
Lester = vaudeville/music hall
Then Sidney J. Fury = elevator muzak?
I think you forgot to add "In my opinion" to the start of this post. Believe it or not some people can feel differently. Your definition of nailed and mine are different. Which makes the world go around. I am hoping he steps back and lets others have a shot at making a Superman movie.
Or glam rock.
Good one! 😄
I literally say in my post “I disagree”.
Indeed, They're trying way too hard to make threads for sequels with different characters. In the first Iron Man, you had Nick Fury at the end and that was it.
Everything with Coulson? Rhodes looking at the Iron Man suits and going "next time, baby"? All the teasing of the Ten Rings? And even beyond the movie, they were shooting The Incredible Hulk concurrently with it and that film came out, like, a month later. You don't like the little easter eggs and hints in Superman '25, fine, but let's not pretend Iron Man was some standalone punt.
I’d argue IRON MAN mostly works as standalone, and the only real moment in the film that explicitly tells you “this is what the MCU is building towards” is the iconic post-credit scene with Nick Fury hinting at THE AVENGERS. Everything else regarding hints and Easter eggs feels like the filmmakers putting things on the table for future films to either explore or not, depending on who’s making those films. Contrast that with IRON MAN 2, which feels like they’re moving pieces in order to set up another movie.
The only thread in SUPERMAN ‘25 I can imagine being picked up on is
I disagree with others that the film doesn’t enough focus on Superman. There are a lot of supporting players involved, but they’re all in service to Superman’s story. Every character is doing what they do because of Superman. Contrast that with BATMAN V SUPERMAN, which tends to be guilty of putting the main story on pause in order to take time setting up other movies, like Wonder Woman looking at files on her laptop for a good five minutes in order to clumsily introduce characters we’ll see in JUSTICE LEAGUE.
This is why I was relieved coming out of SUPERMAN ‘25. The trailers make it all look so packed and complicated, but it’s ultimately streamlined. At least that’s how I felt, I understand others felt it was overwhelming.
Epic! The score does not hold back.

@DarthDimi I don't understand why Christopher Drake does not get the opportunity to compose current live action DC.
Uh, yeah, like all the scenes :))
(I do not care at all for the execution of that plane scene)
