Skyfall's Titles, VFX, and the Mystery of Bond's Face

Some of you have probably read a bit of this discussion by now. During SF's titles we get an image of what is presumably a younger Bond inside a cracked wall. The camera zooms in on his eye and we see the brow twitch slightly. Obviously this reflects Bond's experiences after his parent's death (in fact it's a visualisation of it in a way) which we learn about later in the film.

At the end of the sequence we get a similar image of an older Bond:

I suppose the question here is: is the first image Daniel Craig's face, or is it an alternative younger actor? Personally I think it's a zoomed in, softened and retouched image of this promo still.

It sounds a bit odd, but this has created a lot of discussion which I've been involved in first hand! And to be fair it's something I've noticed different people have conflicting opinions on.

Personally, what interests me more is hearing from people who might have a bit of VFX experience, or know someone who does, who could give a bit of an insight into how this, and perhaps how other parts of SF's titles were achieved. It's not my area in Post Production, and I feel background reading on this can either be a bit too technical/dense, or default to the creative process behind the decisions, and not so much a concise explanation of how much of this was done. It might even be of interest to people wanting to get into some of this stuff perhaps.

I used to play around with this simple program that could morph one image into another, and you could save out the animation into individual frames and see how the image morphs into the other at any stage. I imagine you could produce a similar image as above morphing a teen Craig into 42yo.
