I thought it would be fun to put together a quiz on the music of the Bond films, devising questions with answers you’d struggle to find on Google! I think you’re a pretty knowledgeable group when it comes to this topic, so I’m sure you’ll do fine ;)
The questions only refer to the official EON series and some of the answers may be up for debate. PM me your responses and I’ll share the answers and winner(s) next week. Good luck!
1. Occasionally the main theme is teased in the score before the opening credits. How many times has that happened in a Bond film?
2. How many scores feature a choir (synthesised choirs do not count)?
3. Who is the only performer of a Bond song not to be credited in the main title sequence?
4. Which leitmotif (musical theme) occurs in the most films (discounting the James Bond theme and 007)?
5. Spelling mistakes or typos have often plagued the releases of the Bond soundtracks. List five such errors.
6. Which lyricist has written the most James Bond songs?
7. Which Bond theme song has the most writers?
8. Which Bond composers have incorporated the main title into their scores, even when it’s not been their own composition?
9. Which was the first Bond theme to be edited for the main title?
10. Which score uses the James Bond theme the most (or variations therein) according to the cue sheet?

I will try too, without checking the movies or soundtrack...
6.
1. Occasionally the main theme in a Bond film is teased in the score before the opening credits. List how many times that’s happened in a Bond film.
This is a fairly straightforward question, which most people answered correctly:
Thunderball
You Only Live Twice
The Man With The Golden Gun
For Your Eyes Only
A View To A Kill
Quantum Of Solace
You can have a bonus point for Tomorrow Never Dies, as 'Surrender' features a fair bit, which David Arnold was hoping would be the title song.
2. How many scores feature a choir (synthesised choirs do not count)?
Diamonds Are Forever (a lot of you forgot the choir that features at Slumber Inc. during Bond's 'cremation')
Moonraker
Die Another Day
Spectre
Bonus point for the children's choir in Do You Know How Christmas Trees Are Grown?, but I'm afraid I didn't count the 'rugby club' version of the main title at the end of The Spy Who Loved Me. Sorry :D
3. Who is the only performer of a Bond song not to be credited in the main title sequence?
So I actually got this question wrong. The answer I was thinking of was Gladys Knight in Licence To Kill, but many of you pointed out that Matt Munro doesn't get any credit too. So a point for both!
4. Which leitmotif (musical theme) occurs in the most films (discounting the James Bond theme and 007)?
A lot of you got this right; it is of course Vesper’s theme (as heard in Casino Royale, Quantum Of Solace, No Time To Die).
5. Spelling mistakes or typos have often plagued the releases of the Bond soundtracks. List five such errors.
People struggled with this answer, but any of the following will do:
Death of Kerin, Death Of Tilley, Space Lazer Fight, Gonzales Takes A Drive, 009 Gets The Knife & Gorbinda Attacks, May Day Jumpers.
6. Which lyricist has written the most James Bond songs?
Don Black - who wrote the most Bond songs with John Barry, but then of course went on to write with David Arnold. He wrote 5 songs in total: Thunderball, Diamonds Are Forever, The Man With The Golden Gun, Surrender and The World Is Not Enough.
7. Which Bond theme song has the most writers?
Most of you answered this correctly. It's Licence To Kill (Narada Michael Walden, Jeffrey Cohen, Walter Afanasieff and then John Barry, Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley for the Goldfinger chords).
8. Which Bond composers have incorporated the main title into their scores, even when it’s not been their own composition?
Pretty much everyone got this question right: John Barry (From Russia With Love), George Martin (Live & Let Die), David Arnold (Another Way To Die), Thomas Newman (Skyfall), Thomas Newman (Writing’s On The Wall), Hans Zimmer (No Time To Die).
9. Which was the first main Bond theme to be edited for the film?
No-one answered this correctly. It's The Living Daylights, which is chopped up for the main title. I would have given a bonus point for Diamonds Are Forever, which has the brass stab and additional string parts for the main title version.
10. Which score uses the James Bond theme the most (or variations therein) according to the cue sheet?
Now I must admit that I haven't checked this myself, but I believe it's Michael Kamen, who uses it 17 times in Licence To Kill according to Jon Burlingame's book. Feel free to correct me though if you think otherwise!
So...drumroll please...the person who answered the most questions correctly is...
@mattjoes! Who got a very respectable 7 out of 10. Well done sir!
Few observations, though:
Corrine Put Down is also a typo as it should be Corinne.
Live And Die is the first main theme to be edited (chopped) for the title sequence. The first part of the instrumental break that comes before the reggae section is completely absent.
If we are talking about altered versions, then both TB and OHMSS title sequences have extended outros.
The typos one I couldn’t do! Out of interest why 009 gets the knife? Is that not 009? I can’t remember! :D
In which case I guess Kowloon Bay from the first expanded TND would count!
Why do I have this feeling that there is perhaps another OST track with a mistake like that? Not spelling per se but naming the wrong location or something.
