Nosferatu’s grown on me on rewatches. It’s wonderfully shot and has this unsettling atmosphere (Eggers is really good at creating that mood in his horror films). I actually like Skarsgaard as Nosferatu and the design. He’s sort of human, but he has all this rotting flesh and deep, monotonous voice. It’s pretty uncanny which I like (it also gives him preying on Ellen this odd element of pedophilia/grooming that I don’t think would be as apparent if they went with the Max Schrek design).
I will say one thing about the film that I don’t think has gotten better on rewatches is ATJ’s performance. It’s not bad but he doesn’t bring much to the character, which is unfortunate.
I do agree though about Taylor-Johnson, didn't like his performance here, though I have liked him in other roles ( but wouldn't be keen to see him get the 007 role!)
28 Years Later
Really liked this one. Its full of inventive direction, music, action, themes and ideas. Not everything hits but I would rather watch a film chock full of ideas, takes massive swings with its narrative and themes, and hit most but miss some. Looking forward to The Bone Temple, luckily not a long wait.
AJT was good in his role but is sidelined for the second half of the film in which Comer and Fiennes take over (due to the set up of the narrative). I still dont see him as a potential Bond however.
The film has been a bit polarising. Those expecting a re-run of Days, just updated to account for the time jump, will be dissapointed. Those who want an expansion of the world and the ideas and potential it can have, will find lots to go with.
For it's 50th anniversary, another hugely satisfying watch, in glorious 4k disc, for what it is arguably Spielbergs finest film! What else is there to say, well written, direction of the highest calibre. fantastic cast, a film of two halves, the first is the set up, beautifully put together intro about the unfortunate inhabitants of Amity dealing with a ferocious Shark attack, the second half even better, a wonderful trio of characters who set off to hunt the beast, all to the sounds of John Williams terrific score! Wonderful stuff!
As a footnote, I recently read that Spielberg wasn't original choice and that Dick Richards was going to helm, but lost the Producers faith when he kept referring to 'Bruce' as a Whale!!!!
Indeed, an amazing film. I rewatched it a few months ago, it never fails to deliver. One of my all-time favourites.
Absolutely mate. A top ten favourite of mine. Just watched the documentary on Amazon the other day. Hugely entertaining because it had such a troubled shoot.
Just listened to the fantastic John Williams soundtrack on the way home from work last night!
The cast were so bloody perfect! though it's funny, i always pictured Sterling Hayden as Quint when i read the book!
Yeh mate, I can see him in the role alright, but I wouldn't swap him out for Robert Shaw, who is awesome! Chuck Heston was too macho for Brody. It needed a vulnerable everyman. And Roy Scheider nailed it!
Same here, everyone. I agree @GoldenGun it's one of those movies that I can rewatch over and over again and never get bored with it. And as @LeonardPine said, it's honestly Spielberg's finest film. Spielberg once said that E.T. and Schindler's List are the movies that he would like to be remembered most for (and I don't blame him). Jaws is arguably going to be third in that list, his personal preference or not!
Yes, it was a flawless cast trio. Robert Shaw should have honestly been nominated for Best Supporting Actor for his role. His performance is never boring. In particular, his Indianapolis Speech. One of the greatest montages ever, in any media. Richard Dreyfuss wasn't acting in the scene, apparently. Also, I'd like to offer some praise for Dreyfuss as Hooper, as he originally turned down the role, and was cast just as filming began! He plays the smart but a bit egoistical youngster quite well! Bruce the Shark was the realest shark, as the less we saw of him, the more real his threat felt. I'd like to praise the editing, as it is truly one of the greatest edited movies ever made, and truly helped the chaotic production out. Verna Fields deserved her Oscar. As for the rest of the great movie, what else can I say that hasn't already been said? It's timeless, and still scares people 50 years later. Also, at my local movie theater, we sold out of our Jaws merchandise, within the first day. Not bad for a movie that looked doomed at one point, and still keeps us out of the water.
