    is 4K less dark?

No. Both are 4K. But the Itunes/Amazon 4K's have raised highlights and especially TB has a more natural look than the UHD ones. That inflatable was surely yellow, not orange, and the sky is blue not blue-green as seen on the UHD.

Think I prefer the greener sea in the previous UHDs but generally the Amazon versions are brighter and more realistic, they look great.

Based on the screenshots, if the UHD shots are on the left and the iTunes are on the right, I prefer the iTunes version. The UHD seems unnaturally dark.

The UHD captures look like whoever personally screenshot them didn’t properly convert them from HDR to SDR.

@Zekidk can you tell us where you got these samples?

I made them all myself. MadVR tonemapping/MPC video decoder give the same results. Would you suggest another method?

I can’t give a suggestion, only that other samples I’ve seen online were not as egregiously dark.

    Here’s a video sample.

And now you’re screen capping a YouTube video that was originally in HDR into SDR? Why?

    Just using your own preference:

But I prefer how it’s presented in the actual YouTube video, your screen cap doesn’t represent that at all.

The improvements in Thunderball are looking much greater than the others so far to me:

Did anybody get a shipping notification yet for the Steelbook set? I pre-ordered from Amazon almost as soon as it was listed. 007.com seems to suggest a June 30th release date.

I'll admit that I perhaps don't know the most about 4Ks but is it not looking like there is a strong teal color grade to the original image? That actually has me worried because despite it's flaws, I think Thunderball is one of the best looking Bonds for it's rich blues.

Is there a source on that? Would love to see the Brosnan films in 4K.

At this point I don't know which is the good version.

I think it varies scene to scene. For example the scene with Domino and Bond on the beach looks a lot bluer in the SDR version to me.
These HDRs seem much more sympathetic to the original presentation to me; they're not as sharpened as the old ones and even the aspect ratio seems to be in a more period accurate 1.75:1 for the earlier films.

That's a good point. Perhaps this is just a case of me being so used to the Lowry transfers that the original theatrical presentation seems odd.

There is a good Digital Bits review of DN through GF that seems to be very glowing so that is putting some fear to rest. I'm very glad to hear that there is deferral to the original presentation and not AI upscaled like a lot of recent 4K releases.

Yeah on the comparison you can see the picture bobs and weaves around and hasn't been stabilised as with previous restorations. I guess you can take that as a good or bad thing depending on your preference, but I think they've aimed for authenticity and to make it as close to watching something from film as possible.

It's interesting that, for me, the HDR makes much more of a difference on TB than it does the first three films: there's a much deeper range of colours and tones revealed. Something to do with the film stock I guess; I'm looking forward to the comparisons for the last two films.

The Lowry remasters on blu-ray had a weird magenta push that was pervasive throughout the films. When I was comparing the iTunes 4Ks with the blu-rays I saw that the magenta was all over, and the 4K got rid of that. You can see it on the image comparisons I made awhile ago on this blog. It’s most notable on skin tones which look more reddish on the Lowry transfers vs the 4Ks.

Connery steelbook set arrived today from Amazon! Absolutely beautiful - luckily no dents and the discs were all clicked-in.

Have been waiting for this moment for at least 5 years. I'm glad they went the tasteful route and maintained a natural, filmic grain look without overly boosting color saturations or artificial sharpening.

    Hmm what to watch first?

I wish I had the same luck from Amazon Canada.

I pre-ordered basically the moment the link was available, but got the email today that it would be delayed. Debating on jumping on the next pre-order from the 007 Store, but the exchange rate is certainly not in my favour.

Mine arrived. Thankfully double boxed so no damage done. Looking forward to giving these a spin.
